| »next review in page (previous review) Got Dry Loop up & running the day after the scheduled due date. Had an issue connecting the feeder pair to the correct Apt's IW -- but now it is all hooked up & working great. Not really a big fan of the overhead loss with ADSL vs U-Verse VDSL internet, but oh well. Still getting about 5.2-5.3 Mbps down/.6 Mbps up. And consistent as a rock. Had a little bit of an adventure migrating my AT&T email address from an U-Verse account to an ADSL account, but after a couple of phone calls to ADSL Tech Support & U-Verse Tech Support, got the email address disassociated from the U-Verse account so it could then be associated with my ADSL account. If you cannot get U-Verse, then AT&T ADSL is a good alternative! Updated Aug 5th, 2009: I had to move to another apartment that is not U-Verse "green"/available. So I am going back to ADSL once again. Scheduled to be installed August 11th. I really do not like that the dry loop prices keep going up. When I first had Pro Dry Loop, it was $30/month. Then it went up to $35/month. Now Pro Dry Loop is $40/month. Decided to just pay the extra $5/month and get Elite Dry Loop @ $45/month. Don't understand how DSL is getting more expensive to provide... Will update again when service is up & running Updated Dec 15th, 2008: As of the end of September, I have ceased being an ADSL customer and am now a FTTN/VDSL customer of AT&T's U-Verse service. ADSL served me well. Updated June 22nd, 2008: I recently moved for work purposes. So naturally I wanted to transfer my service to my new place. I was told that Dry Loop accounts cannot be transferred, and instead I would have to cancel the old account at the old address and start new service on a new account at the new address. Fine. I set up the old account to terminate on the same day as the new account is due to go active.... Fast Forward to due date: I plug in my DSL modem, it syncs up, I pull up the AT&T DSL registration website, type in my new account number, and it gives me an error and says to call tech support. I pick up the phone. After doing basic troubleshooting, Tech Support then transfers me to Sales. Sales informs me that this new order had been canceled -- not just that, but that I called AT&T between my order date and the due date to cancel the order, because, as they told me, I wanted to keep my current POTS and Line Share DSL at that address. Well, I'll let you imagine my reaction to that load of crap. So basically, I have to order new service AGAIN and get a new account number, and of course, a new due date, 1 week later. I said you can get it sooner or I'm calling Comcast. The CSR said there is no way to speed up the order. I hung up. Called Comcast, heard their offer. Told the CSR there I would think about it. A couple days later, I called AT&T back, spoke to customer care, they gave me some sort of account credit, took my new order (still due 1 week after this date), I expressed my concerns with this whole process, and in the end just let this new order go thru. Now here is the kicker: I had DSL service on this line the whole time this process was going on: The whole time my DSL modem would sync up to AT&T and I could go to AT&T's registration website, and some very limited browsing on att.com. All I needed to get the full internet was a valid DSL account number to complete registration. So basically, about 3 days before this final order was due, I tried the registration site again (with this new account number) -- and it worked. So I got my service going about 3 days before the official due date, but about a week and a half AFTER my original due date on that 1st order that I mysteriously called in to cancel because I wanted to keep POTS and Line Share DSL I never had at my new apartment... Also, apparently AT&T has raised prices for Dry Loop DSL, as I was paying $29/month for the Pro Tier before I moved, but was told that for my new service at the Pro Tier level, it is now $34/month. I tried to negotiate into keeping the same price I had before, but did not have any luck. Oh well. Original Review: Ordered originally as line share, as I had not been educated as to Dry Loop (Thank you, DSLReports!). I originally ordered in July 07 with a 1 year contract, however the order did not get completed until mid-August. After the "live" date, found out the drop was not connected to my apartment's line at the apartment NID. AT&T fixed that, then I had service (had to have first bill adjusted from the "expected" live date to when they actually had the service up and going). I converted over to dry loop sometime around December 07/January 08 (still under the same 1 year contract -- no new contract was required). No issues there. I got a SpeedStream 4100b DSL modem (free after rebate). I also got a 3-month free service credit for coming over from Comcast (after 3 months of paid service). Line Share price for Pro (3 Mbps down/.5 Mbps up) speed was $24.99/month, and now Dry Loop Pro is $28.99/month, no taxes or fees over that. And no useless landline phone charges either. The only bad was reported in the AT&T Midwest forum here, where one of the routers in Elmhurst, IL was malfunctioning and roughly half the internet was inaccessible (any IP address that ended in an odd number would not route). That has been fixed. And the problem/issue was only there for I think a day. AT&T caught it very quickly. The advertised speed and max speed may not be on par with Comcast's top (6 Mbps with powerboost to 12 Mbps locally), but I love the CONSISTENCY of the 3 Mbps. DSL does NOT slow down to dial-up like speeds between 3 and 9 pm on school days. My old Comcast line was notorious for that. All around, I have been and am very pleased with my AT&T Pro Speed DSL. It was automatic, they shipped me the modem, and they turned on the service. Support here on BBR is excellent via AT&T Direct. Something that was annoying: AT&T had been bombarding me to switch to them with offers of cash back, rebates etc. However they refused to provide any for just Internet--- they push DSL with POTS only. (Or U-Verse.) Plus they charged me for the modem I didn't want or need (they insisted, and no rebate) and they charge a penalty price, a higher monthly rate, for daring to NOT want POTS. Since I was trying to save money, this is annoying. DSL is still cheaper then Cox.... just barely. I'm also having some issues with speed consistency. Not sure why. Line is always up, which is a whole lot more then I can say for Cox. Pings are decent. IMHO It's pretty expensive for what you get. AT&T really should consider boosting DSL speeds, especially on the upload side, and shouldn't expect $45+ a month for 6mbps down/640k up. The news that AT&T is testing metered billing, with low, low caps and high, high overage charges is also a big, big minus. Followup comments:

The Allowances range from 20GB to 80GB per calendar month... who does this? This is the 1st time whether it be DSL or Cable Internet Provider, that i have seen Bandwidth limiting. It's sad that the day my DSL is suppose to be activated i had to call and have it canceled. I dont know where the company is headed i am thinking they need to generate income, idk. So for those administrators who work from home and remote in, those who have children or even themselves who game online via PC, XBOX, PS, WII, ect..., or perhaps you download movies with a torrent downloader or simply watch netflix online, your so screwed. This company needs to understand unlimited is the way its suppose to be. you dont offer unlimited and then place limits on it, your taking away from our service!! For those who just got a notification in the mail as i did, its time to disconnect your service and show your displeasure with the company... the only way to make change is generally hurt them where it counts... and saddly its the pocket book. which have not received much attention from ATT, fives years ago they started the dsl lines here and we subscribed, and renewed under their new contracts at $ 14.95 a month, when that contract expired then ATT bumped our rate to $ 30.95 a month, this has been a rock solid connection for us with no troubles, but based on distance we can not get the speed quoted, since has been pretty much hassle free for us up to this time we have not considered changing but price may become a factor for us in the future. | »next review in page (previous review) i had this service once for 1.5 years and switched to cable due to there lack of reliability, and support. threw out the whole time i had service with them on this period my service was allways having issues i dared giving then sbc another chance and got dsl again, the service worked excellent for the first 5 monhs, and well the next 2 months where ever the worst, service, support, i broke my contract when a outsourced dsl tech insulted me and went as far as to cuss me out. Pre Sales information: Was ok up untill they started to push unwanted product onto you. Install Co-ordination: excellent, install date was active and on before due date. Connection reliability: was a toss up, and something then sbc, could not or would not resolve. Tech Support: horrid horrid horrid outsourced tech support THE WORST i have yet to experiance. i had a DSL tech cuss me out because he was right and i was not. on other occasions the tech support are clueless, hard to understand, rude, unwilling to work with the customer,,did i mention rude??? Services: again when it worked it was great, but help you if you have problems on your line. Value for money: i cant see haveing cheap DSL and connection reliability issues toppled with horrid support = any value of money,,,i want a service that works when i need it to work, and a support staff the can resolve problems, when it is not, to not insult a customer and further cussing them out. no amount of cheap is worth this so no value here. again to anyone who is considering getting DSL, if you have or know you have pots problems GET ANY OF those problems RESOLVED before getting DSL update 9-22-08 nothing new to add as i have vowed never to get service from this company even if given for free!!!! 7-2-09 funny i get snail mail at least once a week to get "upto" $300 cash back to "switch" HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yea right.......... | »next review in page (previous review) how can i be billed 90 dollars??? insane? since i cancelled before my billing date in mid of feb! so i am being bill in full for feb and march! i always hated att and their shady billing practice... its a pain to find a csr that would work with you, most of them are just arrogant they would bounce me around for like an hour i got fed up and just don't want to waste any of my time with these clown anymore. Update 2/21/09 I have since dropped att dsl because its slow and I don't need it anymore download real fast... upload real slow....and i hate that its a leechband a blood sucking connection. I will not come back anytime soon because I don't want to continue to fund these technology that are very behind the time and are like a floppy drive, obsolete. Their was no usage cap for the last 10 years and if they do implement in the next 6 month or less it will only prove my point that they are getting worse. They say they will enforce cap but its too late by then the world is going fiber and nobody is gonna wait any longer. if i stick with them and they charge me outrageous fee for going over the limit its bye bye. we the consumer have a choice who say we have to have service with a company that would restrict our usage that was unlimited to begin with. They are desperately trying to keep this ancient scrap copper based broadband from going under so the only that is going to keep it running is more money, more funding for these greedy company mean more profits and the same crap service that we will never see any improvement in the near future. Its like being on dialup at 28k or 56k indefinitely. I been with att for 6 months and i can say that its ok lite usage but nothing impressive about it... the download is decent but the upload is pitiful. Its not economical to have multiple broadband...two connection mean i need two computer to use it. three connection means i need 3 computer to use it. its a pain to bond multiple connection into one. It is best to have just one that is fastest and cheapest. If i wanted faster connection why not upgrade to 10/10 for 54.00 or 20/20 for 92.00 from surewest fiber optic which comes with digital tv and telephone service as well and cheaper too instead of paying more for less? We are comparing day and night Followup comments:
