That thing needs a USB extension cord really, really, bad.

You guys have that hunk hanging off your USB ports?

Actually, it's not that big and very lightweight. It also comes with a cord for tight spaces.

Based upon the weight of the thing, it weighs roughly the same as a AA battery. To me I would say the battery weighs more.

Re: Magic Jack Setup Pictures

You can use the magicjack with most phones, just like with any other kind of service.

The broadband and computer have to be on, but you can close off one of the internal lines in your house and then call from any phone jack that you wish.

Calls are free in the U.S. and Canada. They are planning to have international rates. However, if the international line has a magicjack, then you can call them and they can call you for free.

Re: Magic Jack

Has anyone been using this for any length of time (2 yrs or so?) I was wondering where they get the phone numbers and also if they are bumming off others companies technology. Was reading somewhere that AT&T was hit w/ millions of dollars in fees from the companies (that add all those taxes on reg. phone bills.) What I really want to know is if Magic Jack is going to shut down any time soon. Thanks.

Re: Magic Jack

Apparently they are their own CLEC, and thus get the numbers from themselves.

At ~$20/yr who cares if they tank in a year or two.

SOmehow, from reading up on their site I get the feeling they aren't going anywhere any time soon.

The product just came out, and is in "BETA 3", so the most you'll find is 3 months (maybe) - certainly not 2 years.

Question on this stuff:

Has anyone figure out how their SIP stuff is set up? Registration address and credentials for the account?

If so, softphones or generic SIP adapters are an option too, meaning your PC does not need to be on all the time.

If the sip info were to get out, I don't see how they could continue to make money via their ads system?...then they may just go the way of SR.

I have a question for the people that already have magic jack.
I am using a usb wireless adapter to access the internet through my neighbors wireless router. Will I still be able to use magic jack?

It should not be a problem as long as you have another USB port available

However, if the international line has a magicjack, then you can call them and they can call you for free.
Does the receiving party, from a magicJack international call, also have to have a magicJack to receive the calls? To make free calls, to a magicJack international line, does the caller need to be making the calls through a magicJack?

Re: Magic Jack Setup Pictures

Right now, magicJack only allows calls to the US and Canada.
They do not have "international" calling capability.

However, there's a post from someone who bought one, set it up, and then mailed it overseas to relatives. They can now use it to call back to the US.
You can take your magicJack anywhere in the world, and call back to the US and Canada "free". But you won't be able to call anyone in the country you're visiting.

If you have a MJ, and you send a friend an MJ in Italy (as an example), you can call each other for free. That's because even though your friend is physically in Italy, his phone number is in the US - so to MJ you're making a US to US phone call.

You can use a USB hub if you do not have another USB drive. But make sure USB should be externally powered.

This is a phone I bought on eBay (not Overstock) to use with my Magicjack. It has mixed reviews but it looks good to throw in a notebook case for traveling. I haven't got it yet but hopefully this week...If you see it on ebay with best offer mine was $3 and was accepted of course another $6 and change for shipping.

Re: Magic Jack Setup Pictures

Same phone I bought from Overstock.com.
It is a LOT smaller than the pictures lead you to believe, almost too small to use comfortably.
The audio is not very loud so if you have a bit of noise around you it will be hard to hear. The ringer is not very loud. Some of the keystrokes are not intuitive, like hitting the redial (RD) key located under the zero key to dial out. You have to really pay attention if dialing a number with a zero in it, as one tends to hit the redial key, before the number is complete. :)

The headset has a earpiece mount that gets uncomfortable quickly.

Having said that, it is still a good size to toss onto a laptop bag for traveling use, just don't plan on using it much for day to day calls.
