Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

I think in the next quarters will make Navigator a much better guide except SoCal seriously needs to update MDN to the newer version. Maybe their waiting for MDN v3.0. They are running ODN v3.1.3_2 though on HDC boxes. Maybe they too are testing the Samsung boxes.

I have the Samsung 3090 DVR. Since Monday of this week I've noticed that the Program Guide only goes out for four days. For example, today, October 28, the Program Guide will only go out until Noon of November 1st.
Welcome to the peculiarities of Navigator. So far it seems to be designed for some lowest common denominator STB.
My new, non-DVR 4250HDC (ODN 3.1.1_3) stubbornly refuses to cache more than four hours of PG most of the time, although I've seen one - two days on occasion. It's not like it needs memory to run a DVR :( .
Interestingly, Find Shows by Title seems to go out about seven days.

rv65 - any rumors on new ODN features for non-DVR boxes?

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

Even my Samsung 3260 does the same thing. It can do maybe 4 days but it takes so damn slow. I wished TWC used DSG instead of DAVIC.

New Navigator features are coming. They're DVR oriented though but some might be useful for non DVR boxes. These features won't come out until 2010 with San Diego or some other division to be the first. My Samsung 3270 DVR does 1 week of guide data. I think your division has their guide data server setup incorrectly.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

Keep in mind that there are quite a few customers using old Pioneer and SA boxes. When I was last at the TWC center there were a few people swapping in those SA 2000 boxes for new 4250HDC's. They did have Samsung 3260 HD-STB's and 3270 HD-DVR's if you asked. They still had quite a few SA boxes though. I did see a few legacy 8300 boxes available. The Pioneers and older SA are way too slow but they did do some enhancements but they still. Most of these boxes are in the double digits. Newer SA boxes are much better except for the 8000/8000HD DVR which sucks even with Passport. The 3250HD, 8300HD, and the newer HDC boxes are generally ok. I had a Pioneer box with an older version of MDN and man was that slow. I swapped it out for a DVR and moved the 3250HD from downstairs to my room and it was great until I got to try out the Samsung 3260.

Most people with these types of boxes swap them until they die. To them if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm sure there are HDTV's hooked up to these archaic POS boxes modulated and stretched. When I got my Samsung 3270 and my other 3260 all they gave me were HD cables. I had like 2 sets of HDMI and 3 sets of component.

Hope this helps.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

The new Samsung DVD recorder STB is very important to TWC. The reason why it's so important is that they can rape you even more. You can copy first run VOD movies put for an additional fee per movie. It's also said to have excellent PQ. The Copy Quality is also said to be very good as well. Better than DVD quality. You can only copy a VOD movie only once! It's a DVR box so you can copy DVR recordings to DVD.

Cisco is also testing one as well. TWC will test both of course but I still think it will be Samsung. TWC has a rather sweet contract. Besides SA has gone downhill when Cisco took over them. A TWC employee in one division I must keep unnamed said their Quality Control was terrible and that they were making them as fast as they could in Mexico. They wanted the new Samsungs so that they could have something that was supposedly more reliable.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

The cost to copy a VOD movie will be akin to buying a cheap DVD. This can add up on your cable bill. TWC loves things that make your cable bill insanely high. Then again, I got a much better and cheaper double play bundle and no I won't get this new box as it would make that bill to high for us. They'll probably charge an additional monthly fee on top of that. This is mostly rumors so some stuff might not be true.

RV or Vis,

I would really appreciate any input you have for this problem. I have one box that continuously misses scheduled recordings. The recording log says set-top box was unable to record this program. It seems to always to happen when two shows are scheduled to record together.

As I have several hours of old shows that I have not gotten to you, I prefer not to get yet another box.
I just wanted to get your input as if its specific box problem or system wide issue that others have had problems with.

Sort by favorites has been in ODN for quite some time yet they deleted it in MDN v2.4.6-19. I no longer have my MDN box so it doesn't affect me. TWC has their work cut out for Navigator. This time they'll fix bugs and add new features. My Samsung 3270 has also missed a few recordings. Then again my only complaint besides the missed recordings is that it's hooked up to an old SDTV via a somewhat broken composite connector. It would be much better if we get an HDTV for that room.

Things I want most:

- Keyword search, like passport had.
- Better descriptions of programs, like passport had.

And this one is just starting to piss me off:

- If it is 5:57, and you are browsing the 6 o'clock block to see what's coming in a few minutes.... and you see a progam you want to see, and you click select.... all that comes up are record options, not a "watch channel now" option (which should be on the top of the list). Instead, you have to go back to the 5 to 6 o'clock block, and select the channel to watch it.... because it is still friggin 5:59! :(

They really should fix that one. RV65, you seem to have all the inside info somehow, do you know if that ever will be fixed?

I presume.... it will be fixed "soon"TM*

* Definition of "soon"TM yet to be determined. Past project completions using the "soon"TM description are no guarantee for future project completion dates using the "soon"TM description.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

Better Guide data already is in ODN v3.1.3_2 in San Diego. The core descriptions are the same but Movie listings now have the actors and the director. The regular listings show the original airdate. Keyword search will be added next year. The search function in general is getting overhauled and it will be much better. I think the Keyboard search will be enhanced to search for keywords. As for the 6 o'clock feature I can't say about that. SoCal is still stuck on ODN v3.1.1_3 so they don't have the new data. I think maybe they can get better data but I find ODN has very good data. ODN v3.1.3_2 can have the current non descriptive data so they have to update the guide data servers. I don't work for them but I can get info from various sources. ODN I think is going to be the preferred version of Navigator since I think it will get the new features first. Also my division deploys new versions of Navigator before anybody else but that could change.

This could be more for the investors though. TWC does want to eliminate having multiple STB's and just have 1 server like STB for all TV's in the house. This can be done with W7MC but limited to only 4 tuners. Other HTPC software can do this.

I apologize for the inconvenience and will be glad to help you.
Thank you for bringing this to our notice. We will share your suggestion with our technical team is working on several improvements to the Search functionality. With the latest improvement, when you press B for search, the keyboard displays immediately. You can then press and hold any of the arrow keys to skip quickly through the letters and it will wrap around to the next row.
With the next phase of improvements, when you press B for Search, the program list displayed to the right of the keyboard will be positioned on the title of the program you are either currently watching or have navigated to in the Guide.
A later phase of improvements will allow you to search for a channel number by entering the name of the network. It will further consolidate multiple listings for the same show.

From a TWC email. Keyword search is cryptically mentioned along with other search improvements. Copy to VCR and remote guide programming are future updates. Maybe TWC will half ass the Keyword search but I hope they dont since they might have licensed the Tivo patents for it.

The arrow key skip works with ODN v3.1.3_2.

More Crapigator madness. Apparently, TWC pushed out an update in the wee morning hours today (November 11). After the update, all of the recordings I had made since the initial Navigator deployment were wiped away clean. This happened even though every single recording had the white cross with green circle to indicate recording should never be erased.

More Navigator bugs. Horrible. I guess everytime there's an update to Crapigator, TWC feels okay just to flush all your recordings. Amazing.

I hope Keyword search gets added in the next update or a bastardized version of it. Keyword search is really just an extension of the keyboard search. You would still use the keyboard to enter in letters but it can now search for keywords. San Diego and the Carolinas will be the first to get it then the other divisions. I'm sure TWC San Diego is testing a new version and hope to get it out by the end of this year.

My SA 3250HD used to do that but my Samsung box doesn't do that. Of course it likes to say Please wait when it feels like it. Same with the VOD. It won't show the VOD preview but Please wait. If you watch a VOD title it will show the Please wait on the upper right hand corner of the screen. The only work around is to change it to a non VOD channel then go back to your desired VOD channel. The 3260 is supposed to do this but not all the time. My engineering contact says it does it when there are changes in the network and it needs to update it's VOD service group. Other customers have complained about this and are working on a patch or a firmware update.

No guide update but a firmware update for all 32xx boxes. The 3260 uses the same firmware as the 3270. The 3270 is the DVR version of the 3260 and has a 320 GB HDD. There isn't a 160 GB 3270 just a 320 GB HDD but there is no PIP due to a hardware limitation in the BCM7405 CPU.

Not to mention the Samsung boxes that our divison has deployed all run Linux.

Here is the Open Source Software that the 3270 uses. The 3260 uses most but not all.

GPL Software
Linux Kernel
BusyBox
xfsprogs

LGPL Software
libuClibc.so
ld.so
libc.so
libm.so
libpthread.so
libgcc_s.so
libstdc++.so
dhcpcd
tftpd
fdisk - Probably applies to the 3270 but is probably on the 3260 since they both share the same FW.

Of course Samsung can use Proprietary components as well. Stuff like the OCAP/tru2way middleware and the Cable stuff are probably all proprietary components.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

Wisconsin here, first time poster with an SA-8300HD box running MDN 2.4.6-19:

I am finally getting used to Navigator, but what I still hate about it is how listings of programs are only returned by Title. That's fine if you are looking for specific movies or the one or two series where you know what they are. But for Sports, in searching for College Football, when you get a Title List of 30 College Football games, it is a nightmare to have to click on each one to see what game it is. How will Keyword Search be addressed to handle this problem?

I am also hoping that as Searches are done by using the Keyword search option that duplicate entries will be reduced. Why when you are searching for a movie or a sports event do we get the words "No Upcoming Shows Are Available For This Title?" If the show is not available, it should not be in the system.

I cannot Record to VCR using HDMI cable. Will the Copy to VCR work with HDMI or would I have to switch to Component Cables for that to work?

For the past 2-3 months, my Sports Now Category only shows anywhere from 0-5 listings of any sports at any time. The other categories, such as Kids Now, HD Now, News and Weather Now are fully populated.

Searching should automatically start on the program you are watching or have Navigated to in the guide, not back to A every time!

Expanded Search categories to make Sports Games and Teams easier to find. Please make the Keyword Search as good or better than Passport.

Manual Recording would be cool to only record parts of a show, or if a live sports event is postponed because of rain, Navigator can take up to 24-48 hours to repopulate the data. Users should have the option to over-ride the IPG Time Grids in recording things.

I would also request a 24 hour phone call or notice before software updates take place, so customers know when to expect changes in the guide or new features. Reach out and communicate to customers in a positive way!

Nearest Tune needs to be included on MDN boxes.

I LOVE Navigator's new On-Demand Channel Screens! Very cool! Right now top priorities should be better (and more) search options, especially to make it easier to find sports such as Keyword Search, game search, team search AND Manual recording.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

Recorded Man Vs Food on my 3270 and it didn't record it. It usually records it but this time it didn't. I've seen this before. Maybe I need to try CBS and Fox to see if it has the CBS/Fox issue. If this gets bad I'll email my engineering contact.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

Say.... I have my 8300 Explorer connected through Component, because an HDMI cable gave me nothing but a very reddish picture and no sound. I was told at the time it was a software error, I believe here on the forum.

Could that have been fixed by navigator?

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator

Maybe, maybe not.

Look Back is being tested in South Carolina and Hawaii. Oceanic TWC is still on SARA and so is SC. SC is transitioning over to Navigator and should be done sometime next year. No timeline for Oceanic TWC to migrate over to Navigator. Oceanic is a TWC test market for new features but SC also tests new features. They were the first to test Start Over. On Channel OD is in development and that will be an extension of Look Back where you can view shows up to 3 days. However there might be some anti REW or FF restrictions in order to appease the content providers.

Keyword search and possibly other new features will probably come next year. Or TWC will continue to deploy versions that don't really do anything. Some divisions still use outdated versions like SoCal. San Diego will be the first to get the new release as always. San Diego didn't get start over until this year or maybe late last year. We probably wont get Look Back or On Channel VOD for quite a while.

Can someone point me to a link that shows me what software I have, or can someone tell me...maybe post a pic of what the menus and guides look like?? Curious is I've been upgraded a long time ago or something.
