[Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

Hi
I'm new; wondering if anyone can offer any help...

I fell down the hole of buying a PAP2 thinking it didn't _have_ to be on Vonage ... then I started reading.

Anyway, I'm trying to unlock said item. I have tried both CYT v3.9 and 4.6, to no effect.

1) I have the unit connected back-to-back with the PC; the webserver shows up at 192.168.15.254

2) Windows firewall is definitely disabled.

3) I can log in using admin / admin (lowercase) and browse around the settings.

4) While logged in, the firmware version displayed is 1.00.13

5) If I try using CYT and don't change the IP address, it rapidly concludes that I haven't logged in (sanity check)

6) If I set the IP address to 192.168.15.254 and ask it to update the Admin and user passwords, it briefly flashes "transmitting data" and then goes to the "press [esc]" waiting for something to happen. I've tried waiting for up to 10 minutes.

7) I've tried using the **** 73738#1# method of doing a factory reset - the pap2 went offline and flashed its lights. This didn't help CYT though

8) I've also tried starting the device with a paper clip in the reset hole and connecting the power, holding reset for 15 secs. This didn't help CYT either.

9) Suspicious of the .15.254 address, I used **** 101 and 111 menus to turn DHCP off and set 192.168.15.1 as an address. This didn't fix it either. CYT responded as ever (without needing the IP address changed now), but sits there saying "Simple XML provisioning server is waiting for your device..."

I've run out of ideas. I've read hundreds of posts, & everyone seems to think that 1.00.13 can be unlocked with CYT trivially (unless you can't read the instructions as far as logging in with admin/admin). I must be missing something, unless 1.00.13 has been subtly changed to make it immune to CYT these days.

Can anyone help ? Any suggestions welcomed.

Derek Roberts.

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

Does either version of CYT detect your device and identify it as a Linksys PAP2 ?

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

Both versions identify the device as a PAP2 v2 - after selecting option 1, the screen fills with information about the device, IP address etc., the asks if all the above is correct & press Enter (which I do) ....

It reports admin password as admin and user as tivonpw, but I suspect that CYT assumes these values rather than having actually read them. I've tried using user / tivonpw in the web browser, but that combination doesn't work. admin/admin does at least get into the router settings.

IIRC, CYT_Unlocker will use Admin/Admin and user/user combination. If your PAP2v2 has user/tivonpw, then it looks like it had been exposed to the Internet to phone home and got provisioned by Vonage because tivonpw is a user password assigned by Vonage on its TI device. AFAICT, my wild guess tells me that tivonpw is the acronym of TI Vonage Password.

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

Out of the shrinkwrapped box (from Circuit City), I have not been able to log in with Admin/Admin, user/user or user/tivonpw

All of these report
"Error: User not allowed to log in at this level"

Looks like you may be onto something though: on the status page I noticed this:

Product Name : PAP2 Ver.2
Firmware Version : 1.00.13
MAC Address : 90:00:00:00:C0:EC
Provisioning Status : Provisioned:Could not reach config server

I'd not noticed the "Provisioned" before; I'm 100% certain it couldn't have connected to the Internet, as it has only been connected back-to-back with my laptop.

Is it possible that they're now shipping in a default provisioned state ? If so, am I hosed ?

thanks for your interest...

I don't think it is legal to sell a provisioned device by a store like CC unless it has a note mentioned on a sticker. Was your LapTop connected to the Internet when you had your PAP2v2 connected to it? If so, did you configure your LapTop as a bridge or a router for your PAP2v2 to use? If no, how did your PAP2v2 first get its IP Address?

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

I think it is working just fine.

One thing with the "Admin" login/password (and "user" login/password) is that they will not work from the main login screen.

They only work from the login screen that says "Enter username and password provided by your service provider"

Once you get into your device with "admin" login, try modding the link to point to:

»192.168.15.1/Voice_adminPage.html

* Make sure to set the proper IP address in that link listed here to match your PAP2v2.

Put in the "Admin" username and password as set by CYT.

No, the laptop wasn't connected to the internet (wifi off, back-to-back connection on RJ45's) - I was trying to be careful not to let it see the Vonage provisioning servers!

I'm not sure about it's IP address; it came out of the box with DHCP enabled, although there is no DHCP enabled on the laptop (WinXP SP2) it seems to have defaulted to 192.168.15.254 in the absence of a DHCP response.

Somewhere I saw someone else mention using .254 as an IP address, so I tried this and the web interface sprang to life.

Subsequently I've been in through the **** 111# (and similar) interfaces, turned DHCP off and set an IP address of 192.168.15.1

To get it to talk to me I set the IP address of the laptop manually to 192.168.15.4/24

How did you configure your LapTop network? Did you configure it with a static or dynamic IP Address?

Static, since there's no DHCP server. I have a single cable running from the PAP2 to the laptop's ethernet port.

OK. Now things start to make more sense. If you have a NAT/Firewall router, you can try the following:

Let us know if this will unlock it.

Ok so the link you provide takes me to a user login page; I have a small problem: CYT is not working (which is the subtext of my post) so has not given me any passwords other than what I'm guessing are the default ones.

So I try user / tivonpw; get
"Error: User not allowed to login into te system"

I try admin/admin again; I get
"Error: User not allowed to login to this user level"

I try Admin/Admin; I get
"Error: Bad username / password

Also: I tried factory reset from the web page; I can only do the first of the two resets because the second asks for the password:

"Please enter the password provided by service provider"

Which I don't have because CYT isn't working for me.

So I'm on the road at the moment, so this will have to wait until I get home next week.

In the meantime, can you suggest how to do a factory reset when its asking me for the "password provided by service provider". Is the **** 73738#1 the way to go ?

Thanks

One thing I liked about the CYT devices is there are RESET buttons. :)
You can push it for at least 30 seconds for hardware reset.

As suggested by yahoo2003, can you try to see if holding such a reset button for more than 30 seconds will clear the NVRAM on both the device and voice modules?

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

I tried 8 x 30 second resets. I did a couple of them holding the reset button down while applying the power.

Device still claims to be "provisioned", CYT doesn't work and admin/admin is the only password to operate.

Web based factory reset demands service provider password to reset voice.

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

I added a wireshark (ethereal) trace for the time from starting CYT to setting the XML server going.

I did a factory reset just before this so this resets to using 192.168.15.254 for the PAP2. However the trace is very similar when 192.168.15.1 is used.

Does anyone know what CYT unlocker should be seeing at this level ?
pap2_trc1.pcap.zip 3,689 bytes
Wireshark trace

After you performed a factory reset on your PAP2v2, did you manually assign 192.168.15.254 IP Address to your PAP2v2? If not, how could it get this 192.168.15.254 IP Address?

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

The PAP2 assumes 192.168.15.254 after its DCHP requests get ignored (that's on the wireshark trace). No idea why it does that.

The subsequent dialog with the XML server looks the same, whether I assigned it 192.168.15.1 or it assumed 192.168.15.254

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

Ok, interesting result.

First, following your procedure I get 192.168.15.1 - but that's after having previously set static IP through the web admin page.

So I do a reset via the back panel switch and the voice I/F reports 0.0.0.0. But after reconnecting to the laptop, the voice I/F reports 192.168.15.254. I know there is no DHCP on the laptop, and wireshark shows the DHCP requests don't get answered, so it must be assuming 254 once it sees link up and no response from the DHCP server.

I'm guessing that for some reason CYT can't do the unlocking when PAP2 has a static IP then ?

Re: [Equipment] CYT & PAP2 problems

Ok, so I'm back at base, and I have some closure for those kind folks who offered help last week.

Bringing the PAP2 up on my home system (with the DSL disconnected) I did the following

1) Factory reset. This reset the IP from static to DHCP

2) Brought the box up, and then connected the network: **** 110# reported 192.168.15.254 as IP address. Interesting! owing to netmask settings, unable to reach the PAP2

3) Powered the box up and brought it up again with the network connected. This time it reported 192.168.2.110, which is on the right subnet for my home network.

4) Accessed the box as admin/admin; worked fine (as before)

5) Started cyt46 and set the IP address. Noted MUCH longer delay than before (about 15 seconds, rather than instantaneous) getting information from the PAP2. Same information displayed, though.

6) After about 30 seconds delay, cyt46 completed and said that it had reset Admin to Admin and user to user.

7) Was able to go to /Provision.html and enter Admin/Admin and see details like the encryption key. Magic!

=======

So my (not very well proven) conclusion is that cyt46 may or may not work properly when the PAP2 has a static IP address.

Can anyone give me any pointers to interesting IP phone providers / deals in UK & US at the moment - where's the bes t place to look ?

Thanks all!
