Where is 4.2.2.1 Located?
I get three locations depending on the geographic locater service I use.
1. Rhode Island
2. Virginia
3. Colorado
A traceroute makes it even less obvious to me.
So exactly where is the 4.2.2.1 server located?
thanks

Then could you or anyone explain how it's possible for 4.2.2.1 to be such a fast DNS server? Notice how FAR away I am from that server.

How can you determine which city they are picking?
Mine seems to go to dallas tx and then die, and dallas is not close at all to me.
Also mine is under 6 hops, amazing, and under 12ms also amazing..
Wish I knew the city though.

The dns servers you did your traceroute to are in Atlanta. Yes, using the last few hops that do have dns records would be what you would use.

If it's ATL then I'm happy since Comcraps DNS is located there also.

Re: Where is 4.2.2.1 Located?
Level 3 and Verizon are not (last time I checked) related. There is some weirdness in how GTE was assimilated by Verizon, such that the 4.2.2.x DNS servers have a domain which is associated with the old GTE. Something about how GTE was parted so Verizon got some of it (residential ISP), and Level 3 got some of it (Tier 1 backbone). Or something like that.

Wow, thanks, I had never heard of that before.

I know of three providers using Anycast for their DNS servers. Besides Level 3 are:
• OpenDNS. Servers located in the Seattle, Washington area, New York City, Washington, D.C., London...and real close to me: Palo Alto, California.
• AT&T Internet Services (formerly SBC Internet Services). The ATTIS DNS servers are located all over the 13-state former SBC region.
So, whether I use OpenDNS, Level 3, or ATTIS (my ISP), the DNS servers are less than 15ms away from me.

And do you, on a consistant basis, find them faster and more responsive than the default Comcast DNS servers?

the 4. space was owned by GTE when they merged with BA/VZ, the "data" side was spun off to form Genuity.(VZ was only allowed to have the landlines) Genuity went bankrupt was purchased by L3, so they got the 4. space.

I don't know what the South S.F. Bay Area default Comcast servers are. I was only commenting on the use of Anycast for DNS. My default provider DNS servers are operated by AT&T Internet Services (ATTIS), and I have not found OpenDNS, or Level 3 to be any better, or worse.
The main fact to keep in mind about Anycast DNS servers; you can't compare trace routes from different locations, unless the two locations are geographically close enough to be using the same servers.
