This made me think about the improvements we have progressed to comparing to how we all use to have 56k modem powered connections to $20.

FASSSSST HIGH-SPEED INTERNET: 56K FOR $25! ;)

This has been in place in some areas for a little while now. Obviously if you're a power user, downloading 4GB Fedora .iso files, you probably won't be happy with it, but for mom to check her email and maybe do some shopping at Amazon, it might be a good choice. Around here $24.95 is a bundle price though, available if you also have cable or CDV - it's likely to be slightly higher if you order it as a standalone product.

Its 40.00 without cable. Its the Economy tier. It is rarely advertised however.
I have seen people with the 6/384 tier and they only used it for email.
I mean they didnt even KNOW what the internet was. When I asked them to see if they could get online they opened outlook and checked email.
When I asked them to do a speed test they didnt know what I was talking about. I asked them to click the BIG BLUE "E". "I never knew what that was for?" "Now, what can I do here?"

It's possible that the ad was inserted by Comcast TV. I was not exactly watching KPDX on UHF 49. I was watching Comcast TV's Channel 3. It's KPDX programming, but Comcast inserts some of their own ads over the broadcaster's ads.

Perhaps the ad didn't mention a non-bundled $40 price because they knew viewers of that particular system-inserted ad already had Comcast TV.

When I checked last night, it was not an option offered by www.comcast.com -- but the ad did not say it would be, either.

Does anyone know what the upload rate is on that tier? Are there any other unique T&C's?

On that point, it's true for the most part. However, Bend Internet is instituting a 10 GB consumption cap for their budget tier.

With a 56K modem (53K datarate), I could transfer 17 GB of data in a month. If I choose Bend Internet's similarly-priced package, then I actually get substantially less if my intent is to use a lot of bandwidth (e.g. P2P file sharing).

Now most users will still actually benefit from the move from dialup to Economy broadband -- they do want to see web pages and images load faster.

But a 10 GB limit on ANY broadband would make me (a consumer) EXTREMELY nervous. Nervousness about cost overruns is the very reason that metered Internet pretty-much died in the 90s.

PS: "Bend Internet" serves the area near Bend - a fast-growing community in central Oregon.

I had this tier (economy plan) before I switched over to verizon's 3M /768K plan for 27.99 priced for life, the economy plan here in Carroll County, MD. is/was 768K/384K for the price that you stated.

That's weird. YouTube video is rather low bandwidth stuff. It all got better when she upgraded?

Most of the Comcast Sales people dont even know about these tiers. In fact the only way I found out about any of these unadvertised tiers was through the tech deptartment.

A fellow coworker has the economy tier with Comcast. It isn't the fastest but it knocked off a good chunk of his monthly bill without having to deal with Embarq's lousy DSL service around here.

Hmm...
I am in Northern Cali and just asked Comcast retention dept. They said it's $24.95 plus the basic cable TV ($12.21).

So, is it really $24.95 (incl basic cable TV) ? We need a poll from some folks who actually have this on their bill.

In some areas - here in NoVA, for one - there's been advertising for the "Everyday Double Play" at $49.90, where you bundle the $24.95 economy internet and the $24.95 Local With More CDV plan together.

Oh, it's real. $24.95 as long as you have at least one other product. I can't vouch for bundles or that it's available in every single market, but it's really real around here anyway :)

Right, 2 products. Thanks. $24.95 + $12.21 it is then.

For a moment, I thought people were saying $24.95 total for both TV and Internet.

Thks for the clarification.

So get a load of this...

I called about this offer tonight and mentioned that I saw it on KPDX. First thing out of the guy's mouth is, "Do you live in the Verizon service area." I told him that I live in Qworst (Qwest) territory. He then says that the 768 Kbps tier isn't available to me, but that a 4 Mpbs/128 Kpbs tier is available for $32.95 with cable (limited basic at $13.75/month.) or $42.95 without.

I also inquired about Blast! (16 Mbps/2 Mbps) coming here, and he said that the Portland area should be getting it in June or July and that it had already been deployed (as of May 1) as Comcast Business Class service.

Re: New Tier?: Comcast HSI 768 Kbps tier, $25 + Free Install

The comcast people don't seem to like signing people up for the Economy tier.

I had Economy and switched up to Blast for a month and a half before switching back to Economy.

In switching back, I asked for the cheapest economy tier.
The woman behind the counter consulted with a more experienced employee.
They said the 4/768 tier was their cheapest.
I argued with them saying they were wrong and I used to have the 768/384 tier.

Finally, the more experienced woman said "whatever" and the newer woman signed me back up for the 768/384 tier.

So, it looks like in some markets, you need to know the Economy tier exists and be somewhat firm in asking for it.
