New HDTV channels in Socal this fall
I just bought a HDTV last week, and called up Time Warner Socal to ask about their HDTV lineup. They told me that they are currently working to upgrade the network in the entire Socal Area (which is true, I received a letter about a month ago that they were going to work in the neighbourhood), and that a total of 20 new HD channels should be added by Fall 2008, and we should be getting a total of about 70 HD channels in 2009. (so that would be 30 or so more on top of the 20)
Sure, they are way behind DirectTV on that one, but I was just wondering if anyone in Socal has any more info, and happens to know which channels will be added?

Evidently, bandwidth is No Problemo for TW except when it comes to English-language programming. I advocate that customers unhappy with the HD selection bear this in mind.

Most of those Spanish channels they've carried for years, they're just grouped into a couple of tiers now and marketed more. About 13 of them are new and would basically be carried in one or two 6 Mhz QAM channels.
Makes sense if a HUGE part of their service area passed but unsubscribed are Spanish speaking.
In July, they're also launching a dozen English HD channels. That takes about six 6 Mhz QAM channels. Another dozen later in the year and another couple dozen next year.
So altogether TWC seems to plan on using about 24x more bandwidth for primarily English HD channels then the amount of bandwidth they using for the Spanish channels they're launching.
So what problem did you have concerning TWCs bandwidth allocation for English language programming again?

Blame that on FSN. They only have content on there occasionally. It's the same for any provider carrying that channel.

Mac, What amazes me is that TWC or ANY of the local operators that I have found, are not carrying any of the Spanish language local HDTV signals. KMEX and KVEA at least have some very aggressive HDTV offerings and promotion. Can it be a retrans consent issue at this point in time? I would think that Univision and NBC Universal would feel the carriage was worth more at this time than trying to nickle and dime the cable companies. At least we don't have to deal with Sinclair around here!

Honestly I don't think there is enough demand for it right now. TWC just started PUSHING a couple of tiers of Spanish programming to try and capture a large segment of the untapped subscribers around SoCal... maybe if that is successful Spanish HD won't be far behind.

That's not FSN-West HD, they never carried FSN-West HD. The channel is called "TWC Sport Specials" or something along those lines. They happen to broadcast the HD broadcasts of FSN-West when a local team is playing, e.g. Angels or Dodgers, and the pre-game and after-game shows. But they do not broadcast any of the other FSN-HD content.
TWC does not have FSN-HD in their line up as far as I know.

You know what.... I REALLY REALLY hope they will add USA HD before the Olympics start on August 8th 2008.
There is not a single standard definition camera at these olympics, everything is recorded in HD format. The Olympics will be broadcast on NBC and NBC HD, USA and USA HD, and Universal HD.
I have Universal HD because I have the HD package for $5. I have NBC HD because it comes with my digital cable.
But they are launching 12 channels next week, and I am PRAYING they will at least launch USA HD before early august, so we can watch all of the Olympics in HD....
It would be a great boast for Time Warner also. "We broadcast all of the Olympics in HD".
But I have a feeling they could care less about the olympics, or they would have launched USA HD with the channels on the 9th already :(

I seriously do hope that this is true and these channels will be rolled out in EVERY legacy TWC division as the HD lineup here in NEO has been terribly lagging behind. Aside from locals, about all we have is TBSHD, TNTHD (both extremely lacking unless they are airing a movie or a very recent original series), FoodHD, Discovery Theater, History HD, both ESPN and ESPN2, A&E, HGTV, Universal, HDNET, and the big movie channels. And half of those channels hardly air anything that is TRUE HD.
One channel I have been clamoring for on that list for the LONGEST time is Discovery so I hope it all comes to this division as promised. Maybe I'll stick with TWC a little longer then and wait to switch to DTV (*gasp*).

I would not be surprised at all if they got USA-HD up for the Olympics. It's AMAZAING how quickly cable companies manage to get it together to add channels for major events. 2 years ago Comcast "temporarily" added UHD just for the olympics, and then pulled it back off once they were over!
Originally I think it took the Superbowl to get CBS HD on the lineup. And there was some other sporting event that netted us TNT-HD.
Looking over the current list of channels it looks like they've reached an agreement with ABC/Disney (ABC Family HD, CNN HD, Disney HD, ESPNews HD) , but not NBC/Universal (USAHD, Sci Fi HD, CNBC HD, Bravo HD).

Oxnard here, Ex-Adelphia
I just had a fun time calling about the channels. The first girl I spoke to said the channels should be available but only to my MOXI box. I looked at the MOXI and reset it but they still weren't available. The second girl I spoke to also said the channels should be available to me and through all of my boxes, MOXI, Moto HD DVR w/HDMI, Moto HD STB w/HDMI. None were getting the channels so the girl decided to set up a truck call even after I asked her to PLEASE double check that the channels are available to me.
I decided to call back right after because I knew the channels wouldn't be available right away from reading the comments in this thread. This time I spoke to a man who actually knew what he was talking about, had a schedule in front of him and confirmed that the channels were not available to me at this time. Oh well.
Oxnard is set for September 10 of this year. Only four cities went live today. Some even have to wait until December.

It depends on whether the program broadcasted in HD or not... I have checked the channels today, and and most have either 1080i or 720p HD programming. Discovery HD, National Geographic HD, and History HD definitly seemed 1080i HD, and HGTV and Food Network had both 720p and 1080i shows.... It really depends on what cameras are used. CNN HD is nice, but a lot of the field reporting is not in HD, and neither is much of the footage they show, such as today's Obama/Jackson stuff. You'll see that kind of footage with a HD banner on both sides of the 4:3 picture. The studio shots of Anderson Cooper 360 are all full HD, Larry King is not.
The biggest scam is Disney HD and ABC Family HD. They had NO HD stuff when I checked them tonight, except (ironically) the 700 show on ABC Family with Pat Robertson, the very scary evangelist. But in their defense, they run a LOT of old reruns and cheap programming.
Also, I was hoping the Tour de France was going to be in HD, but Versus HD is broadcasting it in SD.
All in all, i'd say the RIGHT channels are actually in HD, some channels have mostly HD programming but some of it in 720p, and some channels have very limited HD programming, mostly because their lineup has lots of old reruns.
I'd say 70% of channels added today actually have HD content in either 1080i or 720p, and the other 30% i just haven't seen HD stuff. But hey, I don't expect "America's Funniest Home Videos" reruns to be in HD format. :D

I would rather have the HD channel now, and be ready when the programming comes. Right now it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation. I know ABC family has a few original shows that are HD (Kyle XY for example).
People say the same thing about Sci Fi HD. When that one show (Galactica!) comes on, I want it in HD, not SD. At that point it doesn't matter that the other 23 hours are usually old SD reruns. Because of the higher bandwidth, the upconverted SD often looks a lot better than the SD equivalent, annyway.

I hear ya. I don't watch Kyle XY, but I (still) love "Whose Line is it Anyways". ABC Family runs a lot of reruns of old shows, like "Full House" and "Americas Funniest...", and just like "Whose Line" none of those were ever recorded in HD.
I did notice a HD program on the disney channel, some cartoon I did not know (I never watch that channel and I have no kids). Yesterday all I saw was some shows probably geared to teenage girls that were all in SD. Hannah Montana was not in HD either, for those who care. ;)

Yeah that's true. Unfortunately when a SD show airs on a HD channel you are stuck to the 4:3 box, where on the regular channel I can "stretch" the picture. Some people hate it, I absolutely do not mind and rather watch the SD picture "stretched" so it fills my screen then having to watch the two big black bars on either side of the screen.
So in that sense, having an HD channel with hardly any HD content is a waste really....
That being said, I am fairly impressed with Discovery HD, National Geographic HD, History Channel HD, Food Network HD, HGTV HD, and CNN HD. My wife loves her design shows in full HD. And I was watching that Ice Road Truckers show in HD last night on History Channel. Very nice.
Too bad that channels like Sci-Fi HD always seem to be neglected. Not just by TWC, but Comcast neglected it as well for a long time, and they recently started adding it. I don't think TWC will get it till next year or so, probably right AFTER the last episode of Galactica airs. :(
I understand about needed network upgrades, and the need to run fiber further into the neighborhood (I saw TWC trucks running fiber 2 months ago in my hood, and got a letter from TWC there may be interruptions due to network upgrades) and all that but when you are ready.... don't offer us ABC Family HD with hardly any HD content. Give us USA-HD instead, so we can at least see MOST of the Olympics in HD coming August.
I got a request in to please add USA-HD to the line up for the coming Olympics, even saying I didn't care if they only put it up temporary and replaced another HD channel for just the Olympics.... we'll see. Don't have much hope unfortunately.

What's funny is I normally read the opposite complaint: Lots of HD channels air their SD as "stretch-o-vision". That said, I prefer stretching too. My brain can cope with the distortion fine, so use all my screen's real estate, please!
But on that note - most of the SD channels air their HD simulcasted shows with bars on the top and bottom. If I zoom my set to compensate, the result is so blurry it's practically unwatchable!
Judging from the list of channels, getting ABC Family instead of Sci Fi or USA is probably less of a capacity issue, but more the lack of a carriage agreement with NBC/Universal.

You are probably very right. ABC Family, Disney Channel and ESPNNews are all owned by the same parent company, HGTV and Food Network share the same parent company, Discovery and TLC have the same parent company, and so do History Channel and A&E.
USA is NBC owned, just like Bravo HD, CNBC HD, MSNBC HD, etc... Sci-Fi is owned by CBS I believe, so that's a whole different ballgame.
Too bad. I would gladly give up Disney HD, ESPNews HD and ABC Family HD, just to get USA HD for the duration of the Olympics.

I am however very impressed as of late with the good customer service I have been receiving from TWC, about a year and a half ago their customer service was absolutely horrible in SoCal, but they seem to have improved quite a bit since they took over Adelphia and Comcast networks in the greater LA area.

I'm in SoCal and I don't have the new HD channels yet. I did notice something strange today. A huge grouping of channels in the 800s. Any idea the reasoning behind this? I can tune into a variety of channels (VH1, Food, Discovery, etc) on THREE different numbers, sub 100 level, then in the 200s, then again in the 800s. I have all this but still no new HD?

I know Anaheim doesn't have the channels, I checked at my mother-in-law's house, and she does not have them yet. Anaheim used to be old-Adelphia.
From what I hear the old-Adelphia network was pretty much in shambles, pieced together with tape, and used up to the maximum when TWC took them over in 2006.

Baldwin Park used to be old-Adelphia, I guess it vary by location. I do not know how bad (or good) our network is but we are slowly catching up. I noticed that my uncle who used to have Comcast has on demand that responds quick while I get "one moment please" all the time or either does not work. Any changes TWC makes he gets it first such as HD on demand, he got it a year earlier, which is frustrating having to wait. I have to wait until November 12, 2008 for the additional hd channels. :(

Well, the SoCal urban area now has more then 50% Spanish speaking people, and the state as a whole has about 40% latinos.
Not real strange you will be seeing an increase in Spanish language channels. I think TWC already offers 95% of available English channels anyways.... just missing a few, like Football Network among others.

Is it possible that TWC can add the channels before our schedule date, for my area in San Gabriel Valley the schedule date is November 12, 2008. It seems like TWC does not care about losing customer to other providers which offers more hd channels. MI,
Unfortunately, TWC Southern California has been mis-managed for quite a while.... the networks previously operated by Adelphia were in shambles, the Comcast networks they took over at the same time were not much better, and TWC's own network was just barely being upgraded.
Right now, they are all over the SoCal areas, installing upgraded equipment, running fiber, etc.... I doubt they are able to move up YOUR schedule, without having to drop someone ELSES town at this moment, so I guess that if you want more HD channels, you should switch to DirectTV or Dish.
And hey, if you switch in the next week or so, you may actually get all the Olympics in HD, which TWC customers will NOT get due to no USA HD, no Bravo HD, no MSNBC HD and no CNBC HD, which are (next to NBC HD itself) the channels that they broadcast on.
Bummer. I am seriously considering DirectTV, but I have to convince my landlord to allow me to install a dish directly facing someones back patio (south)....

The dozen HD channels TWC launched to many of it's SoCal systems in the last couple months take up more bandwidth then all of those non English channels combined and there's more HD coming.

1) None of the channels mentioned are high-definition. I don't know how Socal is setup, but from what I remember you can put about 4 or 5 SD channels in the same bandwidth as 1 HD channel.
2) Half of the channels mentioned there are already provided, they are just also offering them on a different set of channel numbers. Eventually, they will consolidate them across the board so that they are the same for everyone.
3) California has a population of 38 million, of which roughly 40% are Spanish speaking, or about 16 million. The current estimate is that only about 2 million of those are illegal (12 million in the entire USA, with California having the most), and the chances that they actually pay for digital cable are pretty slim, most of them can't even sign up because of no SSN, and most of them can't afford it.
4) For your information, the majority of Spanish speaking people in California are actually U.S. citizens, and have been born here. The fact that they do not speak English, does not automatically disqualify them as Americans by law. The U.S. Constitution does not provide for a national language either, we simply don't have an official language. The founding fathers of this country simply thought that there should be a universal language to govern - which is English - but that the personal liberties of each individual should contain the right to speak whatever language one pleases to speak. And thus it is an issue left up to the states. Some states have English as their official state language, most states don't.

Absolutely correct. Again, I advocate that current and potential customers bear this in mind when considering their in-home entertainment purchases. In my opinion, the TW corporate lackeys who promote this service and pander to people who have no business being here in the first instance should be charged with aiding and abetting an invading enemy in the US.

I always knew there were people that were pretty short-sighted, but that it was THIS bad.... I had no idea! Over 95% of Hispanics in California are here completely legal, and more then half of latinos are born and raised here as Americans.
They don't speak English, but that was the Founding Fathers fault, for not having the government force a language on us, but letting our own liberty decide what we speak. That doesn't make them any less American though.
Again: Most of those channels were already there, they are just being moved around to different channel numbers. And is it really that bad to offer about 15% Spanish language channels in a state where over 40% speaks Spanish as their first language?

The InHDs/Mojo HD were never a part of the HD Tier here, they were always free, but it looks like the latest addition to the HD Tier is MGM HD.
Here's it's $4.95 from HD Net, HD Net Movies, Universal HD and now MGM HD. If TW ever gets contracts with Smithsonian HD and Wealth HD I'd expect them to go in the HD Tier as well.

My sources say it won't happen until 2009. More like in February. They must be looking at DTA's or giving customers a discount on boxes. TWC San Diego also acquired an Adelphia system in a northern part of the county. Cox hasn't gone SDV in the San Diego DMA yet Time Warner has in Non Adelphia area. It's my understanding that new HD channels and possibly new SD channels will be added via SDV.

The plan is to have about 22 to 23 Analogs and up to 50 of them will go digital. This will give them a ton of room. I don't see San Diego getting 80 HD channels. Maybe more like 60. Bob Barlow the new President of TWCSD says there is still more channels. He wants a total of 10 to 15 new HD channels added by the end of the year. 2 of the Ex Adelphia HD channels TLC and Animal Planet HD were added. Food Network and HGTV HD have yet to have been added. They added Disney HD and Science HD. I have a feeling that more will be added. Employees are testing a facelifted Navigator IPG and they also are testing more HD channels.

San Diego still has More HD to go. Bob Barlow seems very determined. His new VP of Customer Care is quite a hard charger. San Diego is a separate network than SoCal. San Diego uses Cisco equipment while the ex Adelphia are Motorola with iGuide. No word on when Navigator gets ported to Motorola. TWC San Diego is already using SDV on 7 HD and a whole slew of SD channels. Mostly ethnic, east coast movie channel feeds and latino package. V-Me isn't SDV since our PBS station has it as a subchannel. No word on MTV tr3s. The Premium HD tier aka HD VIP tier is SDV. Hopefully TWC will make the people north us get more HD channels. Maybe San Diego will have more HD than socal even though our DMA is much smaller.

Whether they are capable or not, it is good to note that out of the "80 channels" they promised, and the same goes for the "100 channels by end of year" from DirecTV, that a great portion of those are Premium channels, such as 6 or 7 HD versions of HBO which has 10 channels now, and likewise for Showtime, Starz, etc. That could easily add up to 30 to 40 HD channels for which a premium subscription is required.
Now I already have HBO (only HBO) from the premium tiers, so i will welcome the HD versions of those.... But I just wanted to warn you that "80 HD channels" does not mean they will add HD channels of 80 network or cable TV networks, they do include the premiums as well.

Yeah from what I understand Time Warner's network was "decent", Conmcast's network was "good", and Adelphia's network was an "utter disaster".
And TWC had to patch em all together. ;)
Ah well, Orange was one of the very first to get the first 12 HD channels, I'm sure we'll get em soon enough. Too bad no SciFi Channel or BRAVO.
One interesting note: The above message states "beginning November 19th", but 5 channels spaces still need to be moved:
"Effective November 25, 2008, CRN 1-6 will be moving from channel 460-465, to channel 971-976."
So let's assume for the moment it actually begins to roll out after November 25th, as the channels listed below will use 460-465.

Re: New HDTV channels in Socal this fall
Adelphia's network wasn't an "utter disaster", it just wasn't as homogeneous as Comcast's network since Adelphia took over 13 different SoCal cable providers in 2000. Adelphia also didn't have the draconian policy requiring cable boxes for customers wanting any service above broadcast basic.
The box requirement, in ex-Comcast areas, alone allows for easy digital channel upgrades (dropping analog) for everything above about channel 36 or so. 40 less analog channels (compared to systems with 78 analog channels) available for digital expansion with just a box swap (analog to digital) in the customer's home is a no-brainer upgrade.
ex-Adelphia areas have a much harder time weening analog customers with 78 channels direct to set off and issuing boxes to all of them, so they've been expanding capacity in other ways.
The HD upgrades listed on the website involved ALOT more then just adding the HD channels and have caused a few problems with digital picture quality, so the schedule was slowed a bit to concentrate more resources on resolving the problems with the new setup.

Re: New HDTV channels in Socal this fall
I don't think they can - at least not yet - legally shut off the "broadcast" basic channels, which is usually the first 25 to 30 channels or so. The rest, are considered "cable" channels and I think TWC can move them to digital and/or SDV any time they want to and ask you to get a box.
So you should still be able to get at least the first 25 or so channels on your TV for a while longer to come. I doubt they will actually shut those off for a VERY long time... at least not 80% or more of the TV can receive them without a box.

Additionally, by the end of 2009 we plan on adding to that, as our goal is to provide up to 120 channels in HD. We appreciate your patience while agreements with other networks are being made."
70 by 1st quarter-end 2009. Nice.
Obviously I did see the "up to" 120 channels, so we'll probably get 112 or so, and then they ran out. :P

Santa Clarita and Tujunga are former Comcast areas, but we're not even on their radar for this next round, and I think Santa Clarita was near the absolute last to get the last round of upgrades.
The upgrades have made the HD picture horrible. It used to be pristine. Now there's frequent loss of composure (discoloration and pixelization) at scene changes. It's now far worse than U-verse's ultra-compressed MPEG-4 feed. It also has a strange side-effect on the 6412 DVR: The fast forward speeds are goofed up. The second press of the FF button barely moves, but the third now moves way too fast.
And of course, there's still no mention of Sci Fi HD. :(

About 5 or 6 years before Adelphia acquired this system from Comcast, Comcast had done a very big rebuild of the system to increase bandwidth and replace the main infrastructure with fiber. However, in just the past 60 days, TWC has been replacing line amps throughout the city to allow for wider bandwith in the last mile! Overall this system ran very well under Adelphia. A big part of that was due to the upgrades Comcast had done during their tenure. But we still have been pushed back from getting the new HDs this month to who knows when?

My sources tell me that Manhattan will get more HD channels. They are working on upgrading that network. That network is the oldest network in the area and they should have it fully upgraded within a couple of weeks. May take longer but they are trying to get it done asap.

I'm I missing something or is TWC not adding Scifi to the HD line-up even after the deployment of SDV?
Why don't they delay The Weather Channel HD, The Tennis Channel HD, Fox Business Network HD and add some channels people actually watch?

Do you mean "channels that YOU watch"?
People watch all those channels. Often its contractual discussions that hold up roll outs of channels.

I want SciFi HD too, but it really depends on the agreement they can make with SciFi channel. TWC wants to add the HD version of a channel you already pay for for free, and not all channels agree with that philosophy. It may be a little harder to strike a deal with SciFi HD.
Tennis Channel is pretty popular among my family/friends by the way, they watch all the US Open and Wimbledon stuff.

Ha Ha.
While you may be a scifi buff there are many who also enjoy tennis and the weather. Contractual discussions means fixing a price that is fair to both sides. This forum howls its disgust every time prices go up.

erpster797,
I have NBATV HD on CH. 713 in San Diego and most of the time it's just a static screen. Maybe it's our area. San Diego has had this channel for quite some time. They are getting some of the new SoCal HD channels but not all. Maybe more HD channels will be added next year when they start to get rid of analog. A bunch of HD channels are going to be added later in San Diego.

Re: New HDTV channels in Socal this fall
It seems that way. CH. 60 and 64 in San Diego are listed as a possible new SDV frequency. That means those channels are going to the digital tier. I still think that lifeline the really basic tier will stay analog. Expanded Basic will probably go digital next year or 2010. Maybe a gradual reduction could help. Some of that bandwidth could go to Small to Medium Businesses' thanks to DOCSIS 3.0.

INDemand Sports HD 1 732
INDemand Sports HD 2 733
These channels have a scheduled launch in a SELECTIVE set of cities so far, and I am presuming that the rest of the cities still need to be planned. (See link posted above)
For all channels goes that they will be launched on the same service level as the standard definition version of each respective channel. Meaning: If you don't pay for the SD version of the channel, ya ain't getting the HD version.
In regards to the INDemand Sports HD channels: I already seem to have them, and had them for several months.... I never purchased anything though, and probably won't either.

Mexican stations aren't must carry but they carry them since it's competitive.

Yeah, my house has old copper too. Not only that, over the last 4 years they have managed to cross my lines no less then three times. Phone rings, and I got a three-way with person A calling person B, and since our line got crossed with person B, we got the call too. Other times I got to listen to phone calls elsewhere in the neighborhood and our phone giving a nasty static noise. my neighbor has switched to RoadRunner because his DSL always disconnected.
On top of that, I live in the MIDDLE of town, in an area built up in the 50ies and 60ies. AT&T states U-verse is available in the city of Orange, and I know at least 1 person who got it installed over at the east side of Orange. I however am 11000 ft from the CO, and it tells me U-Verse is not available, nor are any speeds better then 6 Mbps available.
The best thing of all is that I recently got called... TWICE in one week, by AT&T, wondering if I was interested in their "new, fast, DOUBLED in speed DSL". Turns out they increased the default speeds from 3 to 6 Mbps.
I asked them if they could do anything better then the 15/2 connection I already had, but of course they couldn't.
Nah... I got a dual tuner HD DVR and I watch HD channels in clear qam on my office TV (card in PC), so it is very likely 3 HD streams will be used in my house with 1 TV and 1 PC with TV card.
No thanks, you can stuff that U-Verse with 2 HD streams somewhere unpleasant. :P

The second wave of channels is now available everywhere except:
Available in January 2009:

The networks in Santa Ana, Newport Beach, Seal Beach and Corona Del Mar must have been a b!tch to upgrade....

As for the third wave of channels:
Available Now:
Artesia, Athens, Baldwin Hills, Bell Gardens, Bell, Bellflower, California Oaks, Canyon Lake, Carson, Compton, Corona, Covina, Cudahy, Culver City, parts of Cypress, Downey, El Cerito, Glenn Ivy, Harbor, Lomita, Hawaiian Gardens, Hollywood, Homeland, Horsethief Canyon, Inglewood, La Mirada, La Palma, Ladera Heights, Lake Elsinore, Lakewood, Lennox, parts of Los Angeles, Lynwood, Maywood, Menifee, parts of Murrieta, Murrieta Hot Springs, Paramount, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Pomona, Romoland, parts of Riverside County, San Pedro, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte, South Los Angeles, The Farm, parts of West LA, Westchester, Wild Rose, Wilmington, and Wilshire.

A buddy of mine lives in South Pasadena which hasn't seen a single upgrade. No new HD channels, and none listed on the website, as well as still being stuck at 10/1 for internet. He called yesterday to complain, and they said summer '09. Sucks for the people living around there.
The way I see it, they shouldn't be allowed to charge everyone the same price yet offer different channel lineups and internet speeds. I think people who haven't gotten upgraded yet should be getting a discount until TW gets with the program.

They should be able to charge what the market can stand. If the customer does not want to pay for it they don't have to.
Of course the alternative would be to give no one it until all areas were upgraded!

That doesn't make any sense to me. You are getting exactly the same as you were 6 months ago, and you still pay the same as 6 months ago. ;)
The fact that the network in your city is more difficult/cumbersome to upgrade, and therefore takes longer to provide the services other already have had for a month or 3, doesn't give the right to any discounts.

Because the 3d wave of HDTV channels only has a few cities listed, I am wondering if Navigator is needed first, as Navigator is compatible with SDV, where Passport is not.
Makes sense:
- Implement Navigator.
- Implement SDV to free up space on cable.
- Add more HDTV channels. :)

maartena,
I have Navigator and it's ok. Not as good as Passport but it's getting there. The OCAP/tru2way version and the legacy version has it's issues. Some features that are in Passport aren't in Navigator like true Manual recording and Keyword search. ODN the OCAP/tru2way version has broken eSATA support. It might be this summer. San Diego our division has had it for about a year. It might depend on what your division is doing. It will be a staggered rollout. Some boxes will get it first and others will get it later. Hope this helps in regards to Navigator.

rv65 @ 21st Apr 04:13AM:
Re: New HDTV channels in Socal this fall
Also there are 2 versions of Navigator. One is ODN aka OCAP Digital Navigator. ODN runs on the HDC boxes and all tru2way devices. That way you can have full digital cable features without having a box. ODN is written in Java and runs on a Java middleware that translates Java code to native machine code. It's pretty stable but it has it's issues.
The other version of Navigator is MDN. MDN is the non OCAP version of Navigator. It runs on legacy Passport boxes. I wouldn't recommend running it on an old Pioneer or SA box since it looks like DOS and runs very slowly. It's pretty responsive on newer legacy boxes like my 3250HD. The 8300HD's run it very well. Sometimes faster than the HDC's running ODN. It does have stability issues.
Motorola networks will continue to use iGuide until who knows when. TWC was working with some company to port Navigator to Moto boxes but now they have OCAP/tru2way so they could use newer Moto boxes and run ODN. The deal with OpenTV to make a moto compliant version of Navigator has fell through but they are working with them on other projects. The Moto DCX boxes will get a tru2way version of iGuide.
Hope this helps.

See my post above here where I posted a reply in which they said there was "nothing to announce"??
My question was SPECIFICALLY about FSN WEST and PRIME TICKET, as Angels and Dodgers games are often not in HD because they share the same 413 channel - only one of them is shown in HD, and the other one isn't.
It's pretty clear that customer service knows nothing.

Meanwhile, they are very busy deploying Navigator, which I find more and more annoying lately. They need to do some major updates to that software and bring back many features.

I live in the SA area and we have SDV which is great if it works. We just got a few big10 overflows. More HD channels should be coming soon and a few analogs are going digital to allow for even more channels. I too want new HD channels but our division picks the lamest ones. I know that they rolled out a set of channels including "Planet Green HD" (that's the only one I can remember) to about 12 cities across the entire southland, but they mysteriously stopped ALL HD channel rollouts as of roughly April 2009, only adding Fox Sports West HD and Prime Ticket HD, and replacing 413 (which as the TWC Sports Events channel) with KCOP13 that doesn't even broadcast in HD most of the time. And that channel 445 I think isn't even a HD channel and doesn't work anymore I believe.

445 is still on although the twc "Programming Alerts" page has said for a long time that it might go away as soon as two months ago. It is the KABC-DT2 channel, is in 720P and most of it's programming is the "Living Well" HD network and is in HD, there are some local fill ins that are not.
KCOP on the other hand is almost 100% HD in Prime Time for MY network stuff, they even run some syndicated repeats in HD. Their biggest non-HD problem is that when they do the Angels games, those are not in HD. AND THEY ARE OWNED BY FOX WHO PRODUCES THE GAMES! And by MLB standards are all produced in HD.

TWC SoCal is finalizing their list of new HD addons. SoCal is getting SDV thanks to BigBand. Motorola and Cisco networks will all get SDV for even more HD channels. However you might experience the This Channel is not available message, press A to continue. Thats what happens when SDV has issues or the channel will macroblock and pixellate.

They did not mention the motorola MTR700.I talked to the rep about a week and a half before the public SDV press release. So we should get I Guide A28 sometime within the next couple of weeks or months if it gets delayed.

Re: New HDTV channels in Socal this fall
I think these new channels will be SDV since TWC LA has placed an order with BigBand to provide SDV for their network. That means both Motorola and Cisco can have SDV. The Adelphia Moxi's might not support SDV so they might have to be swapped for a Moto box. Though they might release a FW update to enable SDV support. I don't see that happening though. SDV is great when it works. When it doesn't you'll see a "Channel not available Message". On Navigator you can press A to try getting it back but A usually doesn't work. I think SoCal could deploy the Samsung DVR for the Cisco area. San Diego has the new Samsung DVR with a 320 GB HDD running ODN v3.1.3_2. and FW v4.2.2.3 It doesn't support OTA but it did come with a DTV notice :). I think MSNBC HD is a likely channel and maybe BBC America HD. Contact your local TWC to see what you want in the new HD channel list.
If you have any Navigator issue please contact TWC using the contact us form but tell them you want it sent to the Navigator engineering team or department to make sure that you get a response. They do respond to your criticism's.
Hope this helps.

Looks like someone fell for some DirecTV marketing. Go here, select Premier and select HD and count. Then add the 6 channels they include in the HD Xtra Pak. Nowhere near 130, even if you count all of those out of market RSNs. Looks like DirecTV forgot to mention all those HD PPV channels they use to pad their numbers on this page.
There are 11 national HD channels DirecTV carries that TW has no contract for (NFL Network HD, NFL RedZone HD, Fuel HD, HDNet, HDNet Movies and the 6 Viacom HD channels). There's over 40 HD channels TW has contracts for that DirecTV doesn't carry.
As far as national contracts go, DirecTV is just about dead last among big name MSOs. Verizon, AT&T, Dish Network and Time Warner all whoop the almighty DirecTVs ass when it comes to HD. DirecTV is an HD joke. No Travel Channel HD, no ESPN U HD, no AMC HD, no IFC HD, where's all the HBO and Cinemax HD channels, no Encore HD, no Versus HD, no MSNBC HD, no HLN HD, no Investigation Discovery HD, I could go on and on.

Typical.
I call TWC and ask about the new HD channels. Guy on the phone knows nothing about any new HD channels. I point him to the website that says "coming soon" these channels, and give him a few known channel names.
"We currently don't carry those in HD"
Yeah no sh.. sherlock, I am calling to check and see when you will.... after all, you have announced them on your website.
Guy knows absolutely nothing, but stayed polite. I'll give him that as kudos. :)
Oh and NO.... I am not interested in your upselling attempt of phone service after I got 0 information out of you. :D
Guess we'll just have to wait. We here at DSLReports often get "the scoop" before their customer service does anyways. They always live about a MONTH back in time. ;)

Moving to an area that offers those channel is probably a better plan than a move to San Quentin State Prison. ;)
Socal doesn't have them yet by the way, and Socal TWC employees know absolutely nothing about it, except what they also read on the website....
.... which reads "soon".
And TWC's definition of "soon"spans over a time period I would not normally associate with "soon". :D
We'll see. As of late - that is the last 6 months or so - I have become increasingly frustrated with Time Warner Cable. They don't know a lot about anything at customer service, so I don't know why I still bother with calling them. The only real helpful person I ever got to communicate with over email was on the socal management team.
About 3 years ago - prior to the Adelphia/Comcast grab - you called TWC and you actually got to talk to someone that knew what they were doing. Things haven't changed for the better as of late.

No worries, customer service up here still doesn't know anything about a BBC America in HD.... :D
As usualy, they probably will get a circular email 3 weeks after the fact stating: "Oh by the way, if any customer asks, we just added these channels 3 weeks ago".

My system is getting SDV by the end of the year. They are adding 20 HD right off the bat the last week of december.
We have had CBS COLLEGE SPORTS HD since 12/08. We were upgraded to 870MHz from 750MHz last year. They also added some new 1GHz nodes to my system when they upgraded. :)
We already have 51HD now so we should go to 71HD by the end of the year.

Yep, TWC dropped it last year when adding the other HD channels back in December 2008. I think SDV is arriving next month or so as TWC said in the letter: "Starting on December 8th, 2009 digital equipment will be needed to continue to viewing channel KWHY....it will continue to be view in a digital format that can be viewed using two-way capable Digital Cable equipment, such as Digital Cable Set-top Box or cableCARD-equipped TiVO or Digeo HD DVR used in conjunction with a tuning adapter."

None of those channels should actually be in clearQAM, you are lucky that ESPN and ESPN2 are clearQAM! (I'm gonna do a rescan right now LOL)
Normally you only get the broadcast networks + their digital extra's and PBS and their digital extra's.
ESPN and FSN are normally encoded. You should be able to get the analog version of those on your TV card though.

What totally SUCKS though is that "Orange County" gets a bunch of HD channels on December 10th..... but is NOT getting BBC America!

I just don't get why a city right next door gets 20 HD channels (I did not count them) and my city gets say.... 15 or so, and some of them are completely different and not available in the first city.
For instance, I am getting ESPN-U HD, whereas the cities getting BBC America HD are NOT getting ESPN-U HD.
Eh what? :D
To be more specific, one group of cities is getting:
AMC HD 480
WE HD 486
E! HD 487
History International HD 455
IFC HD 480
Fuse HD 494
MSNBC HD 446
HLN HD 447
CBS College Sports HD 474
NBA TV HD 472
Outdoor Channel HD 499
G4 HD 495
TV One HD 498
Investigation Discovery HD 449
BBC America HD 448
WGN America HD 458
TCM HD 478
Style HD 488
HSN HD 489
QVC HD 490
While another group of cities are getting:
Speed HD 468
ESPNU HD 467
Disney XD HD 461
The Weather Channel HD 454
AMC HD 480
E! HD 487
History International HD 455
IFC HD 480
Fuse HD 494
MSNBC HD 446
HLN HD 447
CBS College Sports HD 474
NBA TV HD 472
G4 HD 495
TV One HD 498
I would understand if they just cut 5 channels in certain cities because their networks aren't quite ready yet.... but why are there difference in channel offerings from city to city, and will the city of Tustin, CA get the top 20, while the city next door, Orange, CA will get the bottom 15, and will get a number of channels that are completely different?
I'd rather change too, I much rather have BBC America HD than ESPN-U HD, I don't watch University Sports. :D
And I guess half of the southland gets to shop in HD, and the other half doesn't. :D (Not that I care much about those anyways...)
Well hey.... I get to watch car races and the weather in HD, while the other half of the southland doesn't. :D

The Former Comcast areas already have those channels, legacy TWC and former Adelphia are kind of playing catch up. This is mainly due to the fact that former Comcast areas don't carry the Basic Cable tier in analog.

Well that's what I don't get....
Comcast and Adephia areas have been TWC for what, three years now?
Why not work towards a channel set that is the same for everyone, instead of a patch-work of different channel lineups?
I understand local channels, city council channels and university channels that aren't available in other cities, but you can reserve a set of channels for those that are the same in most cities.
Other then that, channels should be the SAME for everyone paying the SAME amount of money. You can roll em out in phases so you don't have to troubleshoot the entire region at once, but this makes it seem like a big patchwork blanket.
Just start fresh with a whole new set of channel numbers. One that is the same for everyone.

Re: New HDTV channels in Socal this fall
That's what is happening, in fact the channels line ups are pretty much identical between the 3 different systems (for channels above 100). And they are all going to be getting the same channels TWC and Adelphia areas are some of the newly added channels and some of the channels that were added a little while ago to the Comcast areas (SpeedHD, EPSN-U, etc.)
In Comcast areas you always needed a box for the expanded basic service, while TWC and Adelphia offer it in Analog, so there is that extra bandwith already there.

I think the Cisco/SA areas will get SDV first then the Motorola areas. SDV has it's drawbacks and when it goes down you'll experience the Channel not available message.

Of course TWC's definition of "shortly" is roughly the same as their definition of "soon".
It annoys me that no one at TWC can ever give dates. You ask their customer support: "When we will have FSN and FSN Prime Ticket in HD" - they answer back "We have no clue" - and 6 hours later they change the announcement page to say they will be launching FSN and FSN PM a few days later on channel 463 and 464.
They probably aren't told anything, scared as they are that one of em might actually.... you know, tell a customer? :D

Dates change often and unfortunately until they are firmed up no one tells anyone anything. Its horrible customer service to tell customers the wrong date for something. This forum has seen many occasions where well meaning people were called liars as the dates changed.

Hob
Oh it gets better.
I once called customer service to ask about adding Sci-Fi HD, and the customr service kindly informed me that they did not have Sci-Fi HD in their current package, BUT that they would be offering several new HD channels such as CNN-HD and History Channel HD within the next few months.
The only problem was.... that Sci-Fi HD was already carried by them in several other cities.... and that I already had all of the channels in HD he rattled up that should be "coming in the next few months". I alsmost felt like taking on a discussion with this guy, but remembered quickly it was probably a waste of my time.
They aren't informed "when the dates are firmed up", they aren't told AT ALL.
And there is nothing wrong with customer service saying:
"The date is TENTATIVLY scheduled for then-and-then, but this planning hasn't got final approval yet so the date may change."
And they have done that in the past.... but that was before the big mess with the Adelphia and Comcast takeover happened and they merged the three customer service departments into 1, and fired a whole lot of em.
It works a whole lot better then.... "We know nothing, we know nothing, we know nothing....Oh hey guess what you got new channels last week!"

There actually is plenty wrong with that. In most cases the only thing focused on is the date!
Were you an ex Adelphia, Comcast or Time Warner Customer?

Time Warner, always have been.
And yes, from 2002 when I first started the service till about 2006-7-ish, I had a hell of a lot better service then I have now.
Not so much in the quality of the service, because I still have a good speed, almost no downtime, and good quality HDTV.... but in the treatment of their customers.
I used to call their customer service, and they actually would be able to tell me when they were going to improve the speeds, or when they were going to release new channels. None of this "soon" crap, but an actual estimate of "Early January", or something along those lines.... and they would actually make that target date too.
Ever since the Adelphia/Comcast addition to Time Warner things have been mismanaged. I guess there is a reason they replaced the whole management here. ;)

well Hob, my family and I were former Comcast cable customers in mid-2006 before TWC took over in late summer 2006 in our area.
at last, MORE HD channels in the Hollywood/Wilshire area of Los Angeles including the long overdue WGN HD, NBA TV HD, AMC HD, Style HD and WE HD channels!
now TWC socal needs is to add the Spike HD channel in their SoCal HD lineup

Well,t his is a bit offtopic but I don't think it warrants its own topic.
Why is when I watch Family Guy on Sunday nights on KTTVD Fox 11 ...HD...channel 411....why is it always in SD. And YES, I'm sure I'm watching it on channel 411. Even has the Fox 11 HD bug in the corner of the screen.
I ask why...because it's always in SD yet when I watch Family Guy on Cartoon Network or TBS they are in proper HD. Doesn't make sense since it's a Fox show first!

BTW, anyone else's Nickelodean HD, channel 459, not working since they launched the new channels in the LA area? Still tells me the channel shoudl be available shortly. Thinking maybe they just don't have that feed ready just yet, but I dunno.
