Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
We are very excited to announce that Google Apps is coming to DSL Extreme!
»biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080722/latu···l?.v=101
In the next month we will begin the migration process from our existing email platform to a Google Apps powered platform. The new platform will open up all of the features that Google Apps offers including improved webmail and the ability to check email on mobile devices. Client will also be able to take advantage of Google Docs.
Clients will be able to continue using their existing @dslextreme.com email addresses under the new platform. More communication regarding the change will be sent to clients via email in the next few weeks.
Thanks

Interesting. Does this mean Google's spam filtering will handle that job? Very good news if that is the case.

It does include Google's built in spam filtering as well as all of the rest of the bells and whistles that they offer today and plan to offer in the future.
Indeed it is very good news! We did a great deal of research and worked very hard to ensure that our next generation of email services would give our clients the best possible experience. That included looking at upgrades to our existing solution and new in house solutions. In the end we found that reaching to the "Cloud" was the best solution for our clients.

Ah yes, the "Cloud"! Are there any privacy concerns above and beyond the existing setup? Are e-mail habits going to be collected and used to form customer specific ads?
As a side note, I no longer use my ISP based e-mail whether it be POP or IMAP instead choose to use Gmail exclusively.

What about encryption? Will Google Apps offer the same SSL (TLS) capability as currently in gmail? Us open wireless users want to know. Port 587 or 465 is MUCH better than port 25 for encrypted SMTP, since so many wifi sites block port 25. :)

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
The terms of service are the same that you are used to seeing with the standard Gmail service that you use. You will not see ads in the webmail interface though.
Additionally, Google Apps uses the same security that is in Gmail including SSL (TLS). These are required under the new platform so it will require customers that aren't currently setup to use SSL to enable it. Tools that can make the necessary changes to the most popular email clients will be provided and communicated when the official migration starts.

Not Google gmail? You have got to be kidding. I tried gmail last year and found it a piece of junk. I got rid of Verizon Yahoo because I had to deal with impossible email that only worked at times and over powering internet service. Now you say your plans are to saddle everyone with Google gmail?

I don't often use google mail direct, but I do have some of my domains' emails being routed through google for spam filtering. I think this is a good change for DSLX. My experience has been that the google interface is more snappy than DSLX's. I gave my roommate one of my DSLX email addresses a few years ago. He has complained a few times recently about problems and slowness with his email. I am hoping this change will satisfy him.

pop3 gmail has worked flawlessly for me. Encrypted, excellent spam filer, added advantage of not using port 25 for smtp so usually doesn't get blocked on the road.

I do not use my gmail account for privacy reasons - Google tracks all email communications, reading / checking all emails that comes to and go from my mail account...
Does this introduction of "Google Apps" mean that since now it will be the same case with my DSLE mail box as well?

I don't think google has the resources or the desire to read the E-mail of its Millions of customers plus our own. It will use a anti-spam system similar to those in place with any other E-mail provider that will scan E-mail text for common words or phrases to determine if the message is a SPAM E-mail but that isn't something done by a human being.
I am a neophyte when it comes to how it all works but it sounds like SSL for POP3 means all E-mails will be encrypted from when they leave your computer to when they arrive at the destination.

POP and IMAP access will still be available. Some settings will change (like you will now be required to use SSL). But your E-mail address will remain the same. The web-mail layout and features will change drastically and will look like gmails web-mail interface. If you want to know how your @dslextreme.com E-mail will look on the website go to gmail.com and create a free gmail E-mail account. It will be pretty much the same but with no advertising.

It shouldn't affect how your Anti-virus scans your incoming and outgoing E-mail.
Edit: SSL is just a setting in your E-mail program that can be checked or unchecked. You will not have to switch to a different E-mail program.

They do. They both have resource and desire to read every E-mail of its Millions of customers and DSLE's own as well. Based on the analysis of email content they create profiles of their users. Selling advertisements based on those profiles it part of their business model. Of cause it's not done by human reading, but rather by computer analysis which is more productive and it's done for each and every email, 24/7.
So, the question remains - will Google analyze and track emails coming via DSLE new (based on "Google Apps") email system or not?
I already have a lot of SPAM coming to my 'account' mail address that I do not use directly for mailing and I did not give to anyone else.

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
There will be a lot of your current customers like me who have no interest in domain names and use POP3 for email and are not interested in gmail service and features.
I have run email lists (MajorDomo, Nexus) for a large Vietnam Vet org for a long time and our members who have used gmail have had an assortment of issues with the program. POP3 mail through gmail works for some and doesn't work for others no matter what gmail or Microsoft may say. This has been a long running problem and there is much documention on the web if one wants to do a Google search.
Gmail also has a known problem with an over zealous spam filter just like those now ruining email delivery in AOL. Roadrunner, Comcast, AT&T, Bellsouth and some other over filtered ISP mail servers. There is no way to turn off the spam filter in gmail like there is with Yahoo so there is no way out of the mess, to just use your own spam filtering. Yes, with POP3 one can use a different spam program but gmail filtering will be running also and that is not acceptable. One will have to consantly be checking gmail to see what it has improperly captured. Me, and a number of my friends have tried gmail and basically all had the same problems I list here.
You will please some some of your customers with the new features but you will also drive many away, too. Just what percentage do you consider is an acceptable loss to run Google? Google and gmail is not the answer to your need to upgrade software situation, IMHO.

You will be switching us from a standard IMAP implementation to one that is still being developed. See »kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_w···ite#IMAP for some information about its quirks.
What advantage is there compared to signing up for a free Google Apps account on our own? Will they commit to a higher uptime? Will you be providing support (for example if we suddenly run into connectivity problems with the IMAP server)?

Google Apps is a bit different than the standard Gmail solution. Namely we will not have advertisement included as Gmail does. On these solutions Google makes their money for the fees that we pay them to host the email. Here is the text from their privacy policy.
By using Google services, you acknowledge and agree that Google may access, preserve, and disclose your account information and any Content associated with that account if required to do so by law or in a good faith belief that such access preservation or disclosure is reasonably necessary to: (a) satisfy any applicable law, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request, (b) enforce the Terms, including investigation of potential violations hereof, (c) detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues (including, without limitation, the filtering of spam), or (d) protect against imminent harm to the rights, property or safety of Google, its users or the public as required or permitted by law.

I'm glad that Google will not mangle my mail correspondence and include their adds into it. But they still make profile, based on email analysis. Taking into consideration that I actively use Google for search purposes as well -- I think it's too much for one company (Google particularly) to collect my search requests with combination of email profiling. I'd prefer to help Google to keep our privacy by controlled limiting of the scope of info that they are gathering from their customers. Common sense tells - it should be either a search or an email, but not both in one place and time.
Is there any way to opt-out this service and use the plain old one?
Thank you.

Email has never been really secure unless you only send email to yourself, you can look at the header in your email to check all the relay host it has gotten through and any one of them could have kept a copy.
The only way to send secure email is to use pgp or smime and a digital certificate to encrypt all your conversations.
I think that google has been doing good job on their email system. I still don't know with their imap implementation how they are going to handle the mutliple level of folder I have.
But for the privacy concern I don't think that there is more problem with email hosted at google or dslextreme than picking up the phone and thinking that ATT or Verizon is going to record your conversation and do something about it.

OZO @ 30th Jul 03:47AM:
Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
It's not about secure email (which presumes usage PGP/GPG or X.509, and you're right about it). It's about tracking all our conversations and linking with our connections (freands, business partners, etc.) automatically by the advertisement industry (Google). Most importantly, with this new move by DSLE, tracking will be done by the same company that we use most for our Internet searches (as I do now)... Not a good combination at all, if you ask me.
With regard to your example with phone conversations -- so far we're not living in a police state -- in order for ATT or Verizon to record my conversations and do something about it they should obtain a warrant first, or they should warn me up front. I think you may remember the mandatory words that you can hear (something like "in order to ... we may record our conversation") when you call to a 1-800 service. It's not an meaningless phrase - you may ask to do not do this thing.

In order for contract to be changed, both party have to agree to it. In this case, if person do not agree to new privacy policy, will it mean that you will waive ETF? As you not going to give people a choice to use old email system till contract is over.

So far, I haven't seen an answer the SMTP question:
Are we being forced to use gmail SMTP from our email clients?
I've spent an enormous amount of time getting my personal server box set up optimally to handle all my POP3/SMTP email. Since I'm on DHCP, I relay all my outgoing mail from my domains through dslextreme.com to avoid showing up on the various open relay lists as a dynamic address on outgoing port 25. Gmail SMTP has some really onerous restrictions on attachments which makes it especially difficult to send anybody anything most of the time.
I just got finished going through the tortuous process of getting my account changed to DHCP and I don't want to have to go through more agony just to keep the same level of service I originally signed up for.

Well... It's may be 'very exciting', but certainly not for me. And it's because:
1) It's a change of TOS which I was agreed upon when I applied for the service.
2) I do not see any saving passed to me while 'paid' service is replaced with essentially the same 'free' (read p.10 on this page) service, which I've been using (not actively though) for last several years.
3) There is no option left for me to choose and it's done without my consent - 'very exciting'...
4) While pushing this change on me - it seems that no one cares about my privacy concerns here...

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
Years ago I began searching for a DSL provider that would give me good speed, reliable service, great support, and no frills. So when I found DSLx I dumped Earthlink immediately and i've been happy ever since. Now I see this in my e-mail box and I am saddened.
I don't like the idea of my ISP contracting out other services which most likely will not be better than what they provide. I also do not like the rep which g-mail carries. I like my DSLx e-mail the way it is. I don't feel secure logging into google.
I did not join DSLx because it was a super power ISP with all the frills. I joined because of all the ISPs on here, you folks are the best in my area and you didn't need stuff like google to prove it.
So what is the next step? AOL, MSN? If this is what DSLx is turning into then I need to reconsider my ISP. I hate verizon but they do offer Fios in my area and for a better price. Maybe its time I look into them.
However, because i've enjoyed the DSLx service greatly all these years, I shall give this a weary shot. Just don't get me wrong, you're on the verge of losing a customer who would pay more for your service vs others and I can tell from the replies as well as reviews, I am not alone.
Guess I should have known something was up when the site got all refined, which by the way is very nice. But please consider offering an option to keep the old e-mail system.

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
Just to ensure that everyone understands correctly, though we will utilize the Google Apps interface for our mail service, your email address will not change. Your email will remain @dslextreme.com and will not be changed to @gmail.com.
There are some inherent differences between the free GMail service that is provided by Google and their paid premium or partner editions of the service. We are paying Google to utilize their platform. They have built a mail platform that supports millions of clients and have the network to support the ultimate level of redundancy in the service. Their interface is speedy for webmail yet they still support POP and IMAP services. With this they extend security by requiring SSL connections.
I can appreciate some people being leery or concerned. I can assure you that we have done extensive due diligence in this and truly feel that it is the best for clients. Google Apps has been one of the fastest growing email platforms over the past 6+ months. Many universities with highly confidential intellectual property emails have adopted and utilized their platform. Though there are a few people here that may vocally disagree we have gotten a lot of positive feedback about the move and new services that it will open up.
I will also reiterate that there will not be any ads displayed in the webmail interface. Google is often scrutinized for having their systems scan email messages to display ads. Since the ads are turned off this should not be a concern. You can see a video from Google about how their free ad support version works, keeping in mind that the paid platform that we are on does not have ads. »www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIxIHQ_as6E
Additionally Google will NOT be provided any personal information about you. They will not have access to your address, phone number etc.
Thanks

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
I am very disappointed to read that DSLE will be using Google for mail. I have already tried Google mail and I was not happy with it. I have 3 major concerns. First, I want the spam filter to be optional, as it is with DSLE mail. I have never found a perfect spam filter, yet. I don't want to go online every day and check the spam folder in each of my email accounts for important, legitimate email that Google thinks is spam. This will be time-consuming and a nuisance.
Second, Google mail blocks certain types of email attachments, such as .exe. Not all exe attachments contain a virus. I have occasion to send or recieve exe files. DSLE/Google mail will then be usesless to me. Also, I consider this to be censorship and ISP's shouldn't censor email.
Third, I don't like my email being scanned for key words whether it is by a human or a machine. I consider this snooping and invasion of privacy. After all, humans do control the machines.
I have been a very happy DSLextreme customer for over 5 years. If I have any problem with my email after Google takes over, I will leave DSLE. After reading these comments, I have a suspicion that losing customers doesn't really bother DSLE.

A MAJOR problem with gmail is that they will block your email address for sending out emails to a list (example your message board members). They will falsely classified your email address as a spam sender, and there's no way to appeal or contact them. I had my vbulletin domain set up thru gmail, but had to use my own domain mx settings. I'm afraid they will do the same to our dslextreme email address if we send out too many mails.

Count me as another long time (5-1/2 year) customer that is extreme unhappy with this development. I have been very happy with DSLExtreme, and will be unhappy to leave since they are one of the few ISPs whose TOS allows running servers (in my case a small web server).
DSLExtreme's reassurances about Google's service are meaningless. Google's business is collecting information about people to drive targeted advertising. Having all my email routed though Google will make it even easier for them to invade my privacy. If I wanted a Google email account I would already have one, but I don't because I don't trust Google far enough to throw a share of their overprice stock.

You can send email to lists. However, they limit you to 500 recipients per message if you're using webmail and 100 if you're using a email client. If you exceed the limit your account is temporarily disabled for up to 24 hours. So its really only an issue if you have large lists. In that case you might want to think about using Yahoo Groups or Google Groups instead of an ordinary mailing list.

I have had SMTP cut off after sending a list of about 50 (and this is something I do infrequently). I now use ny IPP's SMTP server whenever I send a list message.

Another approach is to use GroupMail (»www.group-mail.com/asp/common/gr···D=169912) (thanks George) to send out the messages individually instead of as a list of recipients for a single message.

Yeah, sending out emails is not a major issue anymore, since I avoid using Gmail. Maybe DSLextreme will save money and keep costs down by using gmail....Good luck!

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
ISPs would probably have a much easier time looking at your emails than google would. ISP's mail servers are also probably less secure, which always leaves the chance of them being hacked and allowing the hackers to access your email. I see no problem DSLextreme moving to google apps. I would love it if my isp did that, their spam filter lets many spam messages to, while almost none get through on my gmail account, and I've only had one or two real emails get put in my gmail spam box.

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
Actually, Google is easier to hack than a small ISP. As the number of features in a service increases, the number of potential interactions increases exponentially. There's a point where the system can't be fully tested in-house anymore.
Google is a constant target for hackers. Their complete lack of customer service, the massive customer base, fast infrastructure, and slow reaction times makes them a top prize. I don't mean nerdy bragging rights, I mean making money selling the hack to crime gangs.
Anyways, my switch to a new ISP completed today. Bye!

I'm posting to this old thread because there is a MAJOR SECURITY RISK with Google Apps right now. You can fix this in Gmail but not in Google Apps accounts except by using a Firefox Plugin.
Here's the discussion of this issue on Slashdot:
»it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0···/1433206
The Firefox plugin is here:
There is a way of turning SSL on in all paid GApps accounts universally. I humbly suggest DSLX do so by default.
There is a 'sploit tool on the way. Think fast, DSLX...

My concerns apply primarily to the spam filtering. I turned off all the DSLX filters and use my own, to make sure no legit email gets trashed. From the sound if it, google mail doesn't offer that same no-spam-filtering control.
However, I'm not pleased with attachment limitations, or machine scanning of my mail contents. And would be especially unhappy if it began adding text lines to my mail contents "scanned for virus by some service or other".
I too would like the option to use the old service. And I've noticed the official updates/replies never seem to address our concerns, instead reiterating all the webmail benefits.
Reassuring no doubt to those who use the webmail interface, but it does not address the majority of replies to this thread.

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
I see the two month cutover announcemnt has arrived.
Now another item not being addressed in the move is those of us who pop3 our email. Goggle Apps gmail pop3 comes over SSL (secure socket layer) encryption. Currently the antivirus companies products do not scan SSL encrypted email. So when you pop3 gmail and download it through Outlook Express, Outlook, etc, your antivirus scanner is not going scan the messages coming from gmail (or Yahoo Plus, etc) for a virus. Now I'm talking Norton, McAfee, Avast, NOD32, etc, here. Check it out, the list goes on and on. Some of the corporate versions do scan SSL but who wants to buy a corporate version of antivirus for their little home computer?
To pop3 email one will have to spend big bucks on a static ISP and email hosting, which is what DSLE is apparently hoping for. There is another way to pop3 SSL and have your antivirus scanner scan the email through a program called STunnel: »www.stunnel.org/
The free Stunnel software loops back SSL email from gmail or any other SSL encryption back into your virus scanner. The Stunnel program requires the change of existing, and writing of new code so is not easy to use and will require some advanced computer knowledge, but it does work.

Wait.. I use Outlook Express for my current @dslextreme.com email. I've been with DSLX for almost 7 years now, I believe.. certainly a long time, and have referred many people to the service.
So under this new scheme, my AVG will no longer scan my emails?
I don't like web-based mail.. I've always preferred using Outlook Express.
I should still be able to do that, right? But if I understand the above post, then using Outlook Express no longer allows my AVG to scan my emails?
What about spam? Will spam still go to a spam folder (which I go online to the webmail once a week to check).. that process will remain the same?
Thanks and sorry for being such a novice...

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
Some anti-virus programs will not be able to Scan the E-mails for Viruses as they come in or go out. A lot of people make this out to be a bigger problem then it actually is. Your computers anti-virus program will still detect and block a virus that may be in an E-mail if said Virus tries to infect your computer.
Considering the fact that Gmail already has server side anti-virus scanning very few E-mails that could contain a virus will make it into the inbox in the first place.
I don't understand why everyone is so upset at Gmail and DSLEXTREME about SSL not working with E-mail scanning anyway. Why should Gmail have to use an older and less secure technology just because anti-virus companies are too lazy to update to current standards?

Because gmail is webmail Outlook Express is a mute point unless you pop3 forward your gmail to OE. Webmail, just like Yahoo, is the way of gmail. I explained the work around for the AV programs which do not scan SSL pop3 forwarded gmail. Apparently AVG is one of the few AV programs which does provide for SSL pop3 forward email scanning:
I have never used AVG so don't ask me a lot of AVG questions.
Gmail Webmail has built in spam filtering (and you can't turn it off) just like DSLE web mail. Noted for being over aggressive, but its there.

I use AVG on a few of my systems and have been very happy with it. I would recommend giving it a try.
Though most anti-virus programs won't scan an SSL encrypted email upon download, when you go to open the message, it should scan it at that time. If it is functioning properly it will block you from opening the message/attachment at that time.
Though I have not personally tried the work around using STunnel but have read in several places were clients have successfully gotten that to work. As you mentioned that would be for those very technical folks though.

Odd statement. I use a POP3 client to fetch Yahoo! Mail. I could use it with Gmail, but tend to use IMAP, which is also an option for Gmail.

I don't use any AV to scan email. The memory resident, on access scanner works just fine. Send yourself an EICAR attachment, and try to manipulate it, without your AV email scanner active.

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
I'm not sure why people are this upset about Google apps. If your email is that important or business critical, you should NOT be using an ISPs email service (domain hosting excepted)! DSLX has to include it in the standard rate because 'everyone else does'.
I'm astonished at those who still use clunky old POP. SSL enabled webmail lets you get email from anywhere, and IMAP lets you sync folders for offline review, reply and backup.
There are plenty of free/low cost email services that are not affiliated with the ISP who provides your connectivity, just shop around. After a painful transition from EarthStink I vowed Never to let my email be hostage to a 'connectivity' ISP. I like Fastmail, but YMMV.
Tip - use your DSLX, Gmail, Yahoo, AT&T, etc account for less important email.

Looks like incoming email has been coming via Google's servers since around 10:30 this morning. The only email I've gotten since then shows a 30 minute delay from time sent to arrival in Inbox. There are several other emails that I've been expecting for over 2 hours though.
Edit: some mail starting to trickle in with around 2 hour delay in delivery.

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
Well this is exciting
I've posted about received email delays in the past (really only from one particular source though), forwarded headers to DSLX tech support with no real resolution other than it must be the senders server, and now this?
I use Mailwasher Pro and Thunderbird. MWPro shows sent & received times and I've received 9 emails today so far with utterly ridiculous delay times.
examples:
1. sent 9/3 11:38am - rcvd 9/3 2:14pm
2. sent 9/3 09:38am - rcvd 9/3 2:38pm
3. sent 9/2 10:19pm - rcvd 9/3 2:51pm
4. sent 9/3 12:16pm - rcvd 9/3 3:37pm
5. sent 9/3 01:23pm - rcvd 9/3 05:00pm
6. sent 9/3 12:42pm - rcvd 9/3 05:57pm
Is this what we have to look forward to? Surely this is only going to be temporary, otherwise I may be forced to jump ship & look for other alternatives.

Re: Google Apps Coming to DSL Extreme
I apologize for the delayed response. As you are aware I have been in jury duty and essentially out of commission through most of the week. I will provide you with a quick update regarding Google and the mail delay.
This morning we enabled dual delivery on our mail servers and began forwarding messages through the new platform. Although the new platform performed as it should, we had an unexpected instance that caused some delays in mail on he legacy platform.
Dual deliver works by delivering messages to both the new platform and the legacy platform. This is done to ensure that clients have time to update their settings on their mail clients and make the transition for an end user relatively seamless. Shortly after the change we saw a rise in the queues for our legacy platform. This was due to the new platform forwarding all mail to the legacy platform. Since the mail was now all coming from the same source IP (the new platform) the high level spam filtering on the legacy platform which filtered mail on a global level now could not be utilized. The legacy platform had to therefor process and deliver a much higher amount email. This caused the queues to rise and has caused a delay in some messages from being quickly processed and delivered. Those queues are now coming down and quickly returning back to normal.
Although the platform functioned properly, in order to take advantage of the dual delivery process we will need to make some adjustment in the process. As I explained above, dual delivery is necessary as it allows mail to be delivered to both platforms and doesn't require everyone to change their settings at one time. Spreading out the migration by utilizing dual delivery makes the transition process easier.
In order to implement the proper changes, this afternoon we re-pointed new mail directly back to the legacy platform. We will be working over the next few days to iron out the process. Other than the delay in some messages the process was very seamless to our clients and the new platform worked extremely well. I am very excited about that.
As I mentioned the servers are quickly burning through the messages so any pending messages should be delivered shortly. We will make the necessary changes and push forward again. Once your email account has been migrated and any mail on our legacy platform has been migrated to the new platform you will receive an email notifying you that your account has been migrated and providing you details on how to update your settings on your email program.
Since this thread has several different topics I think it would be best to close it. I will open a new thread once the migration has taken place. As always I plan on announcing it here first.
Thanks
