[TW] how are the speeds/latencies throughout the day/night?

Hi folks,

I was once a proud subscriber of the EarthLink Cable via Time Warner and I switched around this time last year when the network became overly congested. There was too much latency (between 500ms~2s) and the speeds were horrible during the day time and worse in the night when everyone was in home downloading crap all the time.

So I switched to Earthlink DSL/Phone service. For about $80 (including taxes) I get a stable 8Mbps/1Mbps line and my phone line is not VOIP (which is excellent). The service has been rock-solid (knock on wood) with latencies around 9ms~14ms at all times during the day. But I'm thinking I want to get rid of the phone line and start using the T-Mobile @Home service and make unlimited calls from home. If I decide to remove the land line, I wont be able to retain the dry loop DSL according to EarthLink so I'll have to terminate the service altogether.

I live in Elmhurst NY (11373) and would like to know if anything has changed since last year in terms of the network becoming more balanced and responsive. I really need something that has latencies below 15ms because I often work from home and i can't deal with the lag in remote access to my work.

All comments will be appreciated.

Re: [TW] how are the speeds/latencies throughout the day/night?

I use earthlink cable, and the speed has been a super drop these months in peak hour, starting 8pm, 10 is the worst (as worst as 1mb download speed or less), start to go back up slowly after 11 or 12, and back to acceptable speed after midnight. My package is 10mb tops, 7-8 is still acceptable, but I never get this speed or even half of the top speed at night these months.
These days (especially nights), the speed has further drops from super slow to virtually inaccessible.
I am in Elmhurst also. I hope fios will come soon so I can try something new, and it can give TW more pressure to provide a better service.

I live in Flushing, Queens I just did a speed test from DSLresports. I got 568Kbs Down and 435 Kb Up. What the heck... I swear this is not normal. I'm using Time Warner Earthlink cable, I think I'll be giving them a call tomorrow. Anyone else with these horrible speed?

Okay good thing I didn't jump the gun just as yet... I haven't had speed problems in ages with my DSL (knock on wood).

I called them about this issue before, won't help much. The CSR would tell you to try to test the speed without the router. I tested, not much different. Besides this, there is not much they can do (or want to do).
The speed is quite fine in the morning or afternoon. I got top or acceptable speed. It is in the evening that the speed start to drop, and super drop in peak hour.

It isn't always like that. The evening/peak hour speed was fine until a few months ago.

Re: [TW] how are the speeds/latencies throughout the day/night?

well I know for a fact that I had this problem when I was living in the city for a year (MDUs). And it was just oversold. Horrible speeds during the day and worse in the night.
So I don't know if anything has changed since then. I guess I'm keeping my service until FIOS comes around.
Thanks guys.

You should file a complaint with the Attorney General, DOITT and the FCC.

I'm in Woodside, Queens. For about 2 weeks I have the exact same problem. It's so unreliable in the afternoon especially after 3PM. I even had a technician come over and check the signal which was fine. Unlucky, he came in the morning when speed is usually just fine.

Re: [TW] how are the speeds/latencies throughout the day/night?

One thing I don't get is, my speed is perfect fine in the morning, so I think this implies the system itself is ok. But the speed then drops to acceptable or lower speed in the afternoon, and drops all the way down at night.
MY theory based on cable internet structure is, may be at night tons of people near my area are using it. Since cable bandwidth is shared, more usage means less bandwidth to share.
The problem is, this bandwidth drop only happened in these months, it was fine back than.
So what the hell happened in these months?

Re: [TW] how are the speeds/latencies throughout the day/night?

I used to live in the city in an MDU before and speeds were horrible once I got home. I used to see ping times at about 2~4seconds (yes thats in seconds). And the worst part was that the building had a contract so that TW was the only cable company allowed and the other option would have been Directv (for alternatives to cable). Verizon was available for phone (not sure about DSL since I never inquired).
So to get back to the point, you might only be seeing the horror of high lag and slow speeds now, but it has been an ongoing issue with the TW network in NYC. Its been such a PITA.

I think I might just decide to complain using the links provided by Bytezboy. THe only problem being that I curently dont have TW/Earthlink cable as my service so I can't legitimately claim all the things I'm saying. On the other hand, you can.

Thats my 2 cents.

Re: [TW] how are the speeds/latencies throughout the day/night?

I will pass, really don't think they would care.
I rather wait for the fios gives TW pressure. I don't need DOCSIS 3.0 now, but at least give me back the good speed.

by the way, does the cable interest service has the fine print of "speed not guaranteed"?

I would stay with DSL if your getting an 8/1 connection.

Some people are still having the issues you mentioned. Mine were cleared up but im bouncing tonight due to a plant problem.

cleared up? good for you
I really think of switch to DSL, only don't know how far away the CO is, and the line's condition.
The top plan is 7mb download. If I can get a constant speed, it is actually better than cable.
