Yeah, I've been monitoring nightly, and good performance (10 Mbps) is still by far the rare exception to the rule of mediocre (~ 5 Mbps) to abysmal (1 Mbps) performance. Guess where we are tonight?

(When it's really bad like it is now, I always double-check against a different server to make sure it isn't just the local BR server. St. Louis got the nod this time.)

Unless you're seeing it consistently, it's just a fluke. Last week I posted one test I made that was off the charts in speed; unfortunately, it also turned out to be off the charts in how unusual it was for that time of night. Here are my results for the last couple of nights:

•10/28/2009 11:35 PM CDT 68.11.159.237 13.09 Mb/s 1.81 Mb/s 5 ms Baton Rouge, LA
•10/28/2009 9:23 PM CDT 68.11.159.237 1.36 Mb/s 1.78 Mb/s 26 ms Baton Rouge, LA
•10/28/2009 6:36 PM CDT 68.11.159.237 4.54 Mb/s 1.80 Mb/s 6 ms Baton Rouge, LA
•10/28/2009 3:45 PM CDT 68.11.159.237 23.34 Mb/s 1.83 Mb/s 5 ms Baton Rouge, LA
•10/27/2009 10:27 PM CDT 68.11.159.237 2.32 Mb/s 1.87 Mb/s 73 ms Dallas, TX ~ 350 mi Open
•10/27/2009 10:26 PM CDT 68.11.159.237 1.65 Mb/s 1.80 Mb/s 27 ms Baton Rouge, LA
•10/27/2009 6:49 PM CDT 68.11.159.237 5.04 Mb/s 1.81 Mb/s 26 ms Baton Rouge, LA
•10/27/2009 5:18 PM CDT 68.11.159.237 19.14 Mb/s 1.82 Mb/s 6 ms Baton Rouge, LA

One good night notwithstanding, this is what I normally experience between 6PM-12AM , and it renders my HSI connection useless for anything much beyond text newsgroups. If the latest reading holds up, it looks like I might be able to enjoy some Netflix streaming before 1 AM. Yay!

Daarken @ 29th Oct 09:32AM:
Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

I definately agree that it was fluke, but it was not as noticable as the 1st speed test was. I did notice that the speed was in a state of flux after I posted that test.
I have had consistant speed issues with cox, and it got to the point where I reduced the level of service because I was NOT recieving anywhere close to what I was/am paying for.

I also have a major issue with Cox's email system. My password is not being accepted for the 3rd time in the past 2 months. I contacted technical support, and they indicated that I had changed it a month ago (which was true), because the original password was not accepted. So I had them reset it, and now its doing it again.
If they where not so busy trying to outclass/sell Lafayette's fiber, most of our issues would go away.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

Does anyone believe the last 12 months of this will have an effect on Cox raising their fees?

Does anyone expect it to get better once they do?

Here's the story:

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Cox customers can expect their bills to be a little higher beginning in December.

Basic cable customers will pay an additional $2.58 each month and expanded cable will cost an extra 42 cents on top of that.

Cox also says they're charging one dollar more per month for premium channels, such as HBO or Showtime.

Internet subscribers will have their rates increased by two to three dollars.

The new rates are effective December 8th.

As my inner Jed keeps saying, "Pitiful, just pitiful."

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

Wow thats pretty messed up. Most people in BR get horrid internet service because of the insane node congestion. Cox should be giving people service fee reductions instead of raising the price for all of the crap that's gone on during the last year. That actually is very sickening to hear. What can you expect though, it feels like Cox doesn't try and prevent these congestion problems from happening, they just react when it does happen....very slowly.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

Well considering the horrible service we've been getting throughout the last month and even before that, now compounded by a rate hike...I'm really hoping and waiting for some sort of fiber connection in and around the New Orleans market. As soon as one is available I'm switching and will never look back. It would take a miracle for Cox to keep me as a customer with another good competitor in the market here. But I honestly don't think Cox really gives a rats #$%. And yes, a rate hike will make you think exactly that with everything else we've gone through around here.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

Not that much better here but I did receive a PM confirming the massive congestion in this entire area. And it's nice to have some confirmation to know that someone actually knows that we're having serious issues. He also said that they're working on it but it just takes time. I really hope it doesn't take too much longer..a year for you all in BR and now over a month for me here in Kenner...and I know I'm not the only one experiencing this around my area. Now with the lovely rate hike, it just ticks me off.

Upload is slower than usual tonight. I usually don't have issues with upload, its just the downstream that's congested...well until those nights that it just craps on itself and hits and drops below 1 Mbps.. but now if my upload is being congested...ugh

Oh and I love how you ping better to a server that I'm geographically closer to lol.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

It's been stated previously that some nodes have been split and others haven't. So some should be seeing an improvement but others are still out of luck. My problems began only a few months ago and unfortunately I'm still seeing slow speeds during peak hours. So no, you're probably not the only one seeing improvements. But many are still waiting for the problems to be fixed. :) I'm still waiting for a fiber alternative around here though.

In the IM I received, it was hoped that the 17 node splits would give some benefit even though they didn't go all the way to my area. It did help some, but it's not even close to the "night and day difference". Some nights are better than others, but I still regularly observe lousy downstream speeds for hours on end.

I can tell you for sure we don't have a node split. Looking at the downstream channel on TSReader right now. 100% utilization and holding steady at 100%...wow...not even dipping to 99%. You'd think Cox would have an alert showing up somewhere with a node maxxing at 100 all the time. I guess not.
