slow, capped DSL speeds

just got att basic speed dsl 10 days ago.
used my zoom modem to connect for first 3 days, but att pushed me to get their supported modem so i did and installed it. i have kept the modem turned on since then, hoping it would 'learn' to go faster.
but speed has been slow since beginning.
after a few days i called att tech support and was told my line is "capped" at 384 kbps. he couldn't tell me why. he put in a report and referred me to their line maintainance department. i spoke with them and they told me that the line was probably capped by their computers and to wait a week or so and see if speeds got faster.
waited and speed is still slow. averaging about 325 kbps download.
with my previous dsl supplier, dsl extreme, using the same phone lines, i averaged about 600 kbps download.
any suggestions? thanks.

Re: slow, capped DSL speeds

You don't have to use their modem! Their modems have a proprietary firmware. So that you can only use them with their service. Use your zoom modem if it worked for the first 3 days. I had a zoom dsl modem and it lasted about one week. After that it just kept cycling the ip address from the dslam, and it couldn't maintain a connection. The thing is if you get one of their modems they can help you trouble shoot it. They won't help you if you use a modem that's not supported by them. One more thing, if you were getting good speed through a different service provider then it's not the modem or the wiring in your house. With a few key strokes, on the computer on their end, they can control your access speed. They control the speed!
