HUGE speed drop
Is it just me or did Earthlink do something to their download speeds? I usually get around 6MB down but in the last few weeks I've only been getting around 1.5MB down. I'm starting to wonder if they're throttling my speeds for excessive downloads (because I download A LOT). However, I've been using Earthlink for over five years and the amount of downloading I do now is the same as it was years ago. I'm not aware of any Earthlink bandwidth cap.
The weird thing is, whenever I powercycle my modem/router, I am immediately gratified with 6MB down. However, five to ten minutes later, the speeds progressively drop, all the way back down to 1.5MB. What gives?
(fyi: I'm running 7 beta if that matters)

Re: HUGE speed drop
My earthlink cable was like that for half a year last year, then I can't take it anymore, dropped cable and switched to DSL in Jan. My speed drop began in the evening, to 10pm the most severe, around just 1mb. The drop happens all day in weekends.
What is "7 beta"?

Re: HUGE speed drop
7 beta is Windows 7 Beta (the new Operating system).
Anyways, the cable guy came here the other day and said the cable that was running from my house to the cable box outside was unshielded, and it was causing a lot of packet loss. He ran a new cable but I'm still experiencing problems :o

Re: HUGE speed drop
too bad
I don't think win 7 or not matters though. If the line got problem, it is going to stay no matter what OS you use.

Re: HUGE speed drop
I noticed the same problem over the last 6 months. In my case, I think it's because of Time Warner, who owns the lines. They have something called "Power Boost" which can give you temporary speed increases so you may have 5Mbps for a few seconds then revert to 1.5Mbps. It happens to me all the time. You factor that with impending bandwidth caps, I'm switching to DSL.

Re: HUGE speed drop
See, the thing is though, I'm paying for a 7MB connection. With Power Boost, the connection is supposed to be 12MB (I think). So I doubt it has to do with that.
Anyways, the cable guy is coming again today; I'll let you guys know how it goes.
EDIT**
Okay, so the cable guy just came again and installed a new modem (which was what I initially thought was the problem). Speeds seem great, but we'll see how if they are able to sustain.

Re: HUGE speed drop
so this implies the modem is the problem?
