Anyone hear about a speed upgrade this summer for Las Vegas? We're still @ 12 down while the people in Cali got 20 last year.

Re: [NV] Speed Upgrade

Well i live on the other side of the states, but if yalls highest package over there is still 12mb down only i say by the end of the year you should see a newer higher package. But I don't work for cox, and I can't promise that it with all internet companys moving to more faster internet speeds and packages withen the next 1-4 years.

Anyways new speed packages being added is all about the demand in areas, and the competition between other companys to keep up with each other. So if your in a select area with say cox only isp giving such speeds, then there not in a rush to give you higher speed packages, because the demand just isn't there.

I think you're 15[20mbps with PB] for premiere.

Yeah we're screwed out here pretty much. Cox is a monopoly. The only other option we have is Embarq 10 meg DSL (which is available in limited areas), so you really have no choice but to go with Cox if you want fast internet and Embarq is too cheap to run fiber. I was hoping Verizon would bring FIOS here so Cox would have some real competition.

Nope, we're still 12. We've had 12 for a year or so now. My friend in San Diego has Cox and they gave him two speed upgrades last year. First to 15 with 20 power boost then to 20 with 25 power boost. Mainly because of FIOS I'm sure. That's why I wish we had some real competition out here for Cox. They really have no reason to upgrade us.

genzoulv I can tell you from behind the scenes that we in engineering are continually working to upgrade the network in the Valley to provide not only the fastest speeds (as you already pointed out we are already faster than the 'other guy' but I say, why stop there? <grin>) but also to improve the quality of the network to ensure that every subscriber is getting the best quality and performance for their money.

I can't disclose when we will be releasing the next speed upgrade - the marketing folks really get bent out of shape when engineering steals their thunder - but rest assured, we haven't forgotten you and we are spending boatloads of money on upgrades even as I type this.

We appreciate you being a Cox customer and I promise we will continue to work hard to deliver the best products at the best value we possibly can.

Well, it would be really nice if you'd put us on par with LA and San Diego. Last years upgrade was very meager (from 10-12 meg). Would be great to see a real upgrade this year. Also, if you think about it, if Cox were to do that then that would make Embarq just about have to upgrade to fiber. Nothing wrong with some healthy competition and price wars. Great for us consumers. :)

Those are just the powerboost speeds you're seeing on speed tests. When you're actually downloading a big file you get that boost for like 30-60 seconds then it levels off at 12 meg. What would be impressive is if we actually got those speeds all the time. :p

In Wichita, kansas here that speed with powerboost were permanently up to 20 Mbits or more of xMbits above over 20 Mbits of downlink to me and also my uplink speed are permanently up to 3Mbits or more xMbits above of speed too. That I cheated with socket core and TCP socket tweak hack so I can get continuous of permanently speeds without going slow down back to a normal of speed that I confirm this a test with net app monitoring that I were getting up to 3,000K bytes of speed downstream as while I watching a video of naruto of japanese cartoon video show.

Re: [NV] Speed Upgrade

NO, news about any speed increase here in Vegas...

Right now I would be happy if I did not need to reboot my modem 2 or 3 time each day, this started about 2 weeks ago... Tuesday, the 25 I had off and spent the day rebooting hourly...

Yesterday I spent 2 hours in the neighbors home, as they were trying to get on line with a new computer...

Computer was fine, brought it here went on line immediately, tested the Ethernet Cable and it worked. Went back to neighbor's home and still could not connect. Rather than keeping me on hold, cox took the cell phone number and then called and hour later indicating she was connected...

Tonight she has www and Usenet, but I only have www service...

Currently no Usenet service. When I first went on line tonight 7:30 I was able to post a few wallpapers, and now I can not download or Upload to the Usenet...

Checked the status page nothing is being reported as a problem, so it must be me, rebooted modem, reset router, and connected the computer and still no Usenet...

No text, no binaries... Getting 10 on most speed test pages, paying for 12 but »test.lvcm.com/ shows I am getting almost 27 - Can never believe that speed test site the last two years...

Did not enjoy reading that Cox is going to upgrade Arizona to 50, and we are still 50% of their previous speeds...

Most every tech that has visited our area I have spoke with is a very polite individual, but here in Vegas we are currently without the speeds that many areas nation wide have, and the Hotel on the Strip and Convention area have speeds Vegas residents can only dream about for many corporate reasons.

Then clearly I have a superior level of service than you since my consistent daily modem signal reboots are accomplished without my help. All I have to do is sit and stare at the modem and connection icon and wait for the thing to finish it's smoke break. I don't remember any clauses in my service that demanded random and numerous connection smoke breaks!

But for me this has been occurring since hmm . . . March in this apartment, and like forever in my other apartment. The sucker just loses link at the modem for anywhere between a minute to 5 minutes. I used to jump into my router controls do a release and renew of the dhcp stuff but I eventually realized that rather than reconnecting me all it did was keep me occupied until the connection came back all on its own. So I quickly put an end to that practice . . now I just go into mouthbreather stasis mode staring stupidly at it till it fully connects

Now this isn't a catastrophic thing for me but it is annoying as hell and it is every single day starting at like 6am thereabouts?

I have the Premier package and the same SB 5100 modem that I got 7 years ago when I moved in.

I think I generally tended to overlook it since I came from NY and Verizon DSL which was the single worst service that I have ever paid for in my life with outages of hours and the same conversation over and over with their reps about how I DO INDEED HAVE THE POWER ON!

Anyhow yeah It isn't that bad here but it is really wearing on me more and more considering the gigantic monthly bill . .

spacefunk, we have noticed that some (not all, so everyone please don't start the 5100s are bad threads) 5100's are having trouble staying stable on the new carriers we have launched.

Moto and Broadcom are investigating the issue but if you would send me a PM with the MAC address of your modem, I would like take a look at the noise levels to see if what you are experiencing correlates to the symptoms we have observed to-date.

Unfortunately this is an all too common problem with multiple dwelling units. Often times a problem will be identified with wiring between our tap and the residence which is owned and maintained by the building owner/property management. Provided they will give us permission we are more than willing to service those lines but often they simply won't give us permission which puts our customers as well as ourselves in a tough position.

Thats cool for you guys getting them faster speeds. Im surprised cox hasn't made a even bigger announcement about the release of this, if in fact they are going to start selling that speed package on the 9th of december. Maybe they have plans to announce it withen the next week or so.

Yeah price is alittle high. But every internet speed package is more there. So i guess with premier tier being $67 a month they have to almost double the price for the Ultimate tier.

No way am I paying that much for 50/5. I'd be willing to pay $100 but that's it. I predict this tier will bomb hard.

I also just got an SB6120 and haven't seen any major speed increases. Why such a difference between tests at speedtest.net and say, Cox (»test.lvcm.com/)? In fact, I've tried 2 computers and 2 browsers clearing cache each time and within a 10 minute period, I had readings all over the place.
My best was from speedtest.

I wish cox would sell a tier like Cablevision's BOOST where you can run a personal webserver on a speedcapped but open port 80.

Hardcore people will still play for it, but yeah that is pretty expensive. Hopefully they'll offer some kind of deals to drive the price down some. I guess it will depend on how many people get it in December.

What are you running for a router? Have you done a zipcode test in dslreports, remember they archive your 3 fastest tests results!

Anyone know how this price compares to say FiOS 50 meg service?

*EDIT*

Just looked. It's $139.95/mo with home phone service and $144.95/mo without. So Cox would be cheaper then them.

I'm using a Linksys Wireless G WRTG54GS router. I wonder where Cox New Orleans is in the upgrade process. I thought after Katrina when they rebuilt that they might be ahead of the game but it doesn't appear so.

not really. i'm betting you get waaaaaaaaaaay more upload with fios' 50mbps service than cox's current 5mbps on their 50mbps tier so its apples to oranges really because the D/U on both tiers aren't the same.

Yeah, FiOS does offer more upload. It says up to 20 meg for the 50 meg plan. Most people really care about the download tho. Least Cox is cheaper, but not by much.

I'm still running a SB5120, and I'm not noticing any upgrade in performance, even after several modem reboots.

Have the upgrades not gone live yet, even though they've sent out emails and are advertising faster speeds?

Re: [NV] Speed Upgrade

Ya, I too am getting results all over on speedtest.net with this new modem. Testing with a Vegas server I get about 12-14Mbts, and some others like Phoenix, Utah and LA I get around 24-38Mbts. That is a large range. Cox needs to compete harder in Vegas.

Exactly TheSant.....that's what I'm finding. Which one to believe?????? You'd think Cox's test on their equipment would want to show higher speeds but it's just the opposite. Just like politics, who do you believe?

Thats because your leavin cox's network, and once you do that speedtest results are more likely to change from one server to another. It all depends on the load on that server, and its available bandwidth.

Another thing, alot of speed test from sites such a speedtest.net, and speakeasy.net they show the powerboost speeds. So running a speedtest on a site like Testmy.net will show the true speeds your getting after powerboost.

Re: [NV] Speed Upgrade

Well when they advertise download speeds up to 20mbps, its really download speeds up to 2.5mb's. Yes all them big numbers look nice on sites like speedtest.net but Testmy.net is really showing you what your getting after your powerboost speeds are gone.

I never got good speeds there even before PB was a glimmer in comcasts eyes.
I get better from the OOL FTP, and thats real.

Re: [NV] Speed Upgrade

Well we also gotta factor in that the testmy.net server is in ohio, and your more west coast. So that can explain things also. Im just saying everyone wants to think i have such great speeds, but all in all you have decent speeds at best. Most of all ISP's advertise as if your getting up to 20mb's but really its 2/2.5mb's.

To really know your true speeds you need to run a test that atleast is 50mbs in size, so you atleast get a good ideal on what your getting.

Re: [NV] Speed Upgrade

Just to clear some things. 20Mbps is 20 Mega bits per second. which roughly translated is 2.5MBps or 2.5 Mega Bytes per second. Referencing speeds in Megabit allows more granularity as well as the sense you are getting more much like something that is only 2.99. I have attached a wiki article explaining it more clearly unless I failed.
