Re: [Modem] Atlanta area, losing DNS resolution randomly

66.21.240.205 fails to reverse lookup because there is no rDNS assignment for it. Everyone will get the same answer regardless of which DNS they are using.

To begin with, the problem you describe of losing your connection for 10-20 seconds does not sound like a DNS problem.
This sounds like there is an adapter somewhere configured to obtain an IP automatically via DHCP and it is failing to obtain an IP because there is no DHCP server reachable.
Possibly, but it also sounds very much like a DSL modem doing a retrain/sync cycle.

When playing WOW (yes this is why I notice it more often than not) I lose my connection to the game (but it recovers in 10 to 20 seconds)
10 to 20 seconds is very close to the 15 to 30 seconds it takes for a modem to lose sync with the DSLAM and regain sync with the DSLAM.

Re: [Modem] Atlanta area, losing DNS resolution randomly

This might sound odd, but my connectivity problem got worse Saturday, it was regularly dropping, sometimes every 10 minutes and only seconds.

Yet on Sunday, I tried something someone hinted about on another page... I put a weather site up, one that refreshes every 3 minutes or so automatically. Well, I had only a handful of disconnects on Sunday.

On Tuesday bellsout will be changing the account to 1.5/256 from (6/384) and I hope that a lower speed solves the problem until I can get comcast out to see what it takes to install their stuff.

Can a wireless equipped power meter have any effect on DSL?

While I have no issues with my wireless at home or my cordless phones I am curious if the power company's wireless equipped power meter can affect my connection?

Re: [Modem] Atlanta area, losing DNS resolution randomly

Just an update.

I am still getting lots of errors on the line. The tech came out and tested the line to the house and it shows good. Inside there was a dsl filter not used right. However that affected throughput only and not connection.

Here is what I am seeing. If I don't use the line it is without errors. In other words, I left my systems offline, no mail or webpages. The 15 minute interval column was clean on system statistics.

Soon as I start using the line I get errors. I get uncorrected dsl errors and many ATM header errors. I also start accumulating dsl seconds in error.

Should I expect 15 minutes to pass without any errors? Why only under load?

If you are not passing any traffic, there will be no errors. There can only data errors if you are actually passing traffic over the connection. The presence of errors on a DSL connection does not necessarily indicate a problem because despite the "D" in DSL standing for "digital", the actual transmission is analog, and data corruption is unavoidable unless you have an extremely clean line. Are you still having problems that impact your use of the circuit, or are you just seeing errors in the modem stats?

Here are the brief stats from my two connections which I consider to be working normally. The errors shown are about a week's accumulation.

dumb questio, but how did you format your stats? I want to post an exact copy but it isn't coming out right?

To give an idea of my problems...

in 24 hours I have had 3000 seconds of DSL unavailable seconds...

Cell Header Errors: 150286 150286
Loss of Cell Delineation: 125214 125214

Current Noise Margin: 10.0 dB (Downstream) 10.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation: 63.0 dB (Downstream) 31.5 dB (Upstream)
Current Output Power: 19.2 dBm (Downstream) 11.9 dBm (Upstream)

I can 99% of time lose my connection by doing one thing... and from either Mac in my house.

I am not sure if that question is directed to me since you replied to yourself, but just in case it was to me, the answer is that I did not format the stats display at all, that is the way it is displayed when I telnet into my Netopia devices and issue the show dsl all command. I do however use the html code shown below to preserve that formatting when posted to this forum:

The horizontal line separating the sections of the stats display is done by using the html code statement <hr>.

It would appear from the above statements that you are still losing you connection rather than just seeing errors in your modem stats.

Have you ever tested at the NID to see if that helps with your problem as I previously suggested?

Have you changed your VPI/VCI setting to 8/35 instead of Auto/35 as I previously suggested? I don't have much experience with the 2wire modem, but I have seen other modems that had problems using automatic VPI/VCI settings.

As for your WoW problems, I will leave that to others to diagnose since I don't do WoW.

I figure its toast. While my connection improved Sunday; Saturday was nearly unusable, it appears Monday it doesn't want to stay stable again.

Going to keep trying Comcast to see if they will come out and install a cable modem. I did stop using the wireless feature of the 2Wire and that seemed to help a bit.

Re: You not having DNS problems. Your modem is losing sync.

Thank you for the formatting... I need to learn to do it better.

Yeah, I was outside with the tech who came out. We also tested inside and had the same results. He did a rip/replace of the stuff in the box across the street but figured that the problem is most likely at the dslam down the street.

My connection is horrid still. Telephone support is a big no go. Hence I am converting to Comcast on the 3rd of July for both phone and voice. I don't have a real choice here. Bellsouth has proven they cannot or will not fix it. I can't even get refunds!

It dies when I first use it each day and then after 30 seconds or so it recovers and randomly drops.

I appreciate all the help I have received. It helped me realize the best solution is to switch providers. When I found out my three nearest neighbors were not on Bellsouth because of issues it sealed the deal.
