I had the $94.99 Triple bundle with extreme HD (6 month price) installed last week. They gave me the 20/20 internet ..so i was pretty happy with that...even though it was more like 19/14. However, I read on this forum about the speed upgrades...so I called them up yesterday.
In the end..i ended up getting the 25/15 internet upgrade and free HBO for $99.99 (taxes, 2 boxes, phone included) ..two year price garuntee. You can't beat that...plus I got some extra extra fluff..lol

I see they have a "Best" triple play bundle for 129.99 which also seems to include "Premium Channels" - is that the Movies Package? If so, then if I renew to that bundle my price goes up $5.
I am getting a free HM DVR at the moment so Im guessing that will end if I renew, but I was planning on downgrading to a regular DVR to save a few bucks, so I think I'll wait until Sept or Oct and hope these bundles are still around then.
The netbook would've been nice for current customers too, maybe if they locked in for 2 years or something.

In California, the 129.99 package includes showtime, and maybe starz and encore. It excludes hbo and max. Their mention of 'premium channels' is misleading to say the least; it is not the familiar $30 package of everything. Nasty, misleading advertisement.

$70 a month for a mid tier? that's disgusting.
i don't see how i have any options now, optimum has their 15/2 plan for $30 a month for first 6 months then price jumps to $50, +$15 for 30/5 boost.
i can stay with verizon 20/5 grandfathered for $696 a year
i can throw away money at 25/15 for $840 a year
OR i can jump to cablevision for:
30/5 boost for $270 for 6 months/540+? a year if i cancelled and re-got service (depending on the wait time between getting new accounts, i could also just get verizon dsl in between reordering service)
or i could just keep boost for a year at $660
i'm only considering for the next year, but i was hoping being in new york would always give me a price edge like everyone always complained about... i don't feel special anymore.

I've found that a single ftp upload or download to my web server in San Francisco will max out at ~!80 kB/s. If I use IE8 to download a file from same server, I max see ~1 mB/s. If I download that same big file using Flashget I see 4.2 mB/s, about 33 mb/s.
I can max out my upstream to the same server using ftp too, but only with multiple transfers going at the same time.

Verizon is not doing it for you, they are doing it for themselves. They are using you to test out their new speeds. It's like beta testing a game. Having faster speeds is obviously better, but making customers "happy" by providing these faster speeds is probably the last thing on their minds. It's all about testing their system.
By the way, I remember chatting with a rep, and he said that the testing was being done on the East coast. Can anyone on the West coast confirm this?

Rumor 3: tests are being done on the East coast, but not the West coast
Rumor 4: in August, the "advertised" speeds and prices that NY and NJ currently receive will become available nationwide
Fact 1: people on the East coast are experiencing faster, symmetrical speeds than advertised
Fact 2: people on the West coast are receiving faster download speeds, but not upload (not symmetrical)
Fact 3: NY and NJ get better speeds and prices due to intense competition
Putting the rumors and facts together, it seems like in mid August, the people on the East coast will by upgraded to the symmetrical speeds of 25/25 or 35/35, while the rest of us will be upgraded to the "advertised" speed and price that they are receiving, I hope. Generally speaking, the longer that it's been since your last upgrade, the more it will cost per month when you finally do upgrade... especially this time around.
Last year at this time, Internet speeds were a free upgrade; and some time last fall (with the release of the Extreme HD package) most people saved money (paid less) when the re-upped with the new bundle...

I would totally agree with your assessment. That seems to be the situation I am in. Before these most recent bundle prices, I was in my local Verizon Plus store upgrading a STB to HD and the CSR asked if I wanted to upgrade to 20/5 and Extreme HD for $10 more per month. I said no, thinking I'd wait for a better deal.
We all see how that decision worked out for me. Now I'm looking at a $25 per month increase to do the same thing. I was soooo smart!?!

So you're anticipating that outside of NY, the people with 25/15 now who are seeing fluff and getting 25/25 will be able to upgrade to 35/20 with no fluff? Hrm, interesting theory I guess. The fact that 15/5 people are seeing 25/15-25 could support that theory...
Time will tell I guess.

jmn1207 @ 1st Jul 06:46PM:Re: Looks like the announcement is announced...[Still Just Guessin']
I suppose I should clarify my guess. :D
I think that the 35/20 plan will remain exclusively for the NY area, at least in this wave of upgrades. If any fluff remains, it might carry over to all tiers for any given region where fluff already exists. It might even remain symmetrical for all tiers, meaning that 75/25 would see results up to 75/75, provided that a suitable means of measurement can be found. (gonna have to really open up my send window ;))
I believe the tiers will be advertised as I initially stated, regardless of whether or not fluff is implemented.
75/25
35/20 (NY area only)
25/15
15/5 (forgot about this one)
It's difficult to believe that fluff would continue, especially with the 15/5 tier getting the same performance as the "fluffed" 25/15 tier.
This site seems to have a considerable amount of influence with public relations, and the fluff being removed would cause quite a stir around here. It might even cause a mini-PR disaster for Verizon, if they're not careful.
vz1guy should seriously consider patenting the word "fluff" when used to describe overhead in this manner. Hey, Paris Hilton patented "That's Hot" and "That's Huge", so why not?

Trademark or service mark is more accurate, unless a process is invented to create the fluff. We presume Boost is somehow patented. That would be great! Not! Another revenue stream from licensing the technology. :(
Boost is a temporary (10 second) burst of accelerated speed.
Fluff, as originally described in vzguy1's post, seemed to refer to the slight overprovision so that the overhead did not get subtracted from throughput. My 20 mbps download measures something like 19.5 mbps in a speed test which only counts bytes that filled the buffer, not counting the extra it took to get it there.
Somewhere since his first post it morphed into what may still be a temporary condition where the speed tier is overprovisioned as much as 25%. Whether it's a prelude to an August Surprise or it's a system stress test, it appears to be widespread enough that it's not a mistake. However, it does not occur in every case of someone upgrading.
Why he hasn't made his next announcement may have something to do with the higher ups trying to find out who leaked what too early last time. So they are telling different people different things and keeping track so when it gets out, they know where the source is.
Unless he's the official anonymous source for rumors and they haven't figured out just what they want to do for the August Surprise.
Stay tuned folks. The buzz is what sells. ;)

jmn1207 @ 1st Jul 08:16PM:Re: Looks like the announcement is announced...Please, like any of these rumors are hurting Verizon's image or their wallets. If there is solid information about new tiers, there is absolutely no way that Verizon could hope to keep it all under wraps a few weeks before it was implemented. There is simply far too much involved to keep something as potentially big as this completely under wraps. And if Verizon spends a single nickel trying to expose a leak as silly as this, I swear I'm cancelling all my service with these nuts and cutting fiber lines as far as I can walk until the police finally arrest me for vandalism.

I would rather have 25/25 over 50/20. I'm just not comfortable about these speeds continuing past August when the tier is advertised as 25/15. If my 50/20 uploads do not increase in this supposed August update and the 25/15 tier continues to see uploads at ~25Mbps, I'm going to switch. I might even pick up a bundled pricing as it would be cheaper than just paying for TV/Internet. (unless I can bundle just those 2 services?)
If I do get phone service, they will have to allow me to keep the copper POTS phone line on a different account, separate from the FiOS/fiber service. No, I don't anticipate that my bill will ever be correct again if I try and make this happen. :)

What plan are you on? 15/15 was a valid speed tier a while ago. Unless you called to upgrade, it's quite conceivable that you'd still be on 15/15 unless you called back when there was a free upgrade from 15/15 to 20/20.

Mind running a speed test on something other then speedtest.net, maybe »
myspeed.visualware.com ?
And for a capacity test, which everyone should use!

You think he'd get any sympathy over in OOL Land? :D

Your speed troubles will be over on Monday.

RolteC @ 18th Jul 04:51PM:Re: Heres a joke for yaEveryone should realize one very important thing.
If one day, everyone(extreme exaggeration) decides to move over to FiOS and start abusing the connection, enough places will start to come on here complaining about slow speeds, and poor uploads.
Every network has its limits, and I am pretty sure when enough customers switch over the problems will start.
sighs, I just hope that day hough never comes for FiOS.
