Web DVR Information

Cablevision will be rolling out a web based DVR management portal on the optimum.net home page, tentatively August 6th. You will be able to add/edit/remove scheduled recordings, and you will also be able to delete content that is already recorded on your DVR(s).

Enjoy.

Re: Web DVR Information

Do you think that by then the DVR itself will be fixed? Meaning that it won't miss or drop scheduled recordings that are made directly on the box?

Typical.....CV decides to roll out new features (not that this is not a GOOD feature) before they fix basic functionality of what's already out there.

Re: Web DVR Information

don't know what you're talking about. my dvr works fine

only time a show isnt being recorded is if you scheduled 2 other shows during that time or if a previously set show is now suddenly scheduled to go over its time slot, thus not allowing another show to begin recording

but thats all about time conflict management, which is difficult b/c any given week things can change and the software won't know about it until the week comes up

Getting back to the original topic, you guys will love that service when it rolls out.

FiOS TV has it. It's not only great for adding a show you hear about when you're away from home, I find the web based feature is much better than the on screen tool to manage our DVR even while at home.

This sounds like the feature that already exists on one of the satellite services. They have at least two commercials for it. One has a bank robbery in progress where one of the hostages uses his cell phone to schedule a recording and the other has a SWAT Team with a "Planet of the Apes" SWAT Commander (or something on that order) doing the same since the stand-off will not be over before the show airs.

the bank robbery one, was it from satellite service or from blackberry?

Re: Web DVR Information

Yep....I forgot about that ad.

With FiOS's feature they have an actual application that will work with Verizon cell phones. But they also have a WPA feature that works pretty well on my AT&T Blackberry.

My wife and I were airlining out to the Coast a couple of weeks ago. She was reading USA Today and saw a new series advertised that she was interested in. I fired up my laptop with Virgin America's wifi service and scheduled the series to record right then from 36,000 feet.

Pretty cool

Just a question:

optimum.net How would that work anyway? Wouldn't you have to optimum online service (with email, etc..) to work it. What if you only have the tv service? Sure anyone can use site. But it seems to be for optimum online users interface.

I also have read ZERO news about this from anywhere. The closest thing I've seen is the ROLLING out of the network dvr talk.

Maybe the option will only be for that service and not the regular set top dvr box.

I'm not too familiar with the CV DVR boxes (I have a crappy SA 4200 HD box on one of my HDTVs), but there hasn't been an option for this? I'm pretty surprised since TiVo has had it for years. I'm not too familiar with the CV boxes, but how well does YouTube, podcast audio streaming, video podcast downloads (Diggnation, Tekzilla, Cnet, etc), Picasa, Photobucket, Music Choice VOD internet streams, Amazon video (both HD and non-HD content) Disney video library and Netflix work on it?

How well does it do off-loading of video in a variety of formats onto PCs, portable media players, etc. I assume Cisco/SA and Cablevision provides software for that (for both Macs and PCs), right? What about widgets? What platform does it use for them (e.g. Yahoo and user-developed ones are used on the TiVo for example). How good is the searching? Does it give a library view with related web content links?

Just wondering how the CV ranks by comparison.

How the CV boxes rank? On a scale of 1-10, it's like a -2. With the SA boxes, we're lucky if it powers on and you can change the channel. It has none of the features you list, nor can you off load it to anything (easily).

You probably forgot to ask about custom video podcasts by the ability to manually enter an RSS feed now -- Tivo just announced that ability today - »news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-103···-1_3-0-5

What was the last thing Cablevision announced? Web scheduling? Was it even officially announced?

Funny how my $8.30 + $2.00 /month gets me an announcement from Tivo of some new feature nearly every month. What does the $9.95 + $6.50 for CV's DVR get people each month, besides a bill in the mail?

Aren't you a CableCard/Tivo/Switching-adapter customer?

Even if you'd claim that have never had a CV cable box in your house, the above amounts to shameless advertising for Tivo's abilities, that are completely unmatched by any cable box, living or dead, today, on any provider, even on the DirectTV integrated-Tivo boxes, and I firmly believe that you not only know that CV's (or Verizon's) DSTBs don't do the above, but that you are trying to be incendiary here.

Trolling much today, aren't we?

I am now able to do remote recording. When you select a program from the guide it will bring up the description box with the option to record. You have the same options as on the DVR, plus you can select which DVR you have if you have more then one. The DVR tab gives you the list of recorded programs on the DVR and the option to delete any that you select. You can see if any programs are currently being recorded and which ones will be recorded in the future. The TV listings are for 10 days but you can only schedule a recording up to 7 days (same as DVR). Programs that are scheduled to be recorded are in red.
The listings do not have channel 734.
So far I am unable to record channel 748. The error message is that I am not authorized to view that channel (Gold Package).

I'm fully aware of how a Web Dvr works. and I know you need to logon to use the feature. I'm not stupid, I need zero lessons in how it works.

Plus anybody that has an IO cable TV account CAN sign up and get an ID/password to pay for bills and such. So you DON'T NEED to pay for Optimum Online Service to use the website to pay bills for your IO Cable TV ONLY service.

You need BOTH.

So for everybody that has a DVR and just IO cable. This WebDVR will NOT WORK.

This stinks.

So everybody that is saying it's not in their area yet. Your wrong. It is in your area. I called to confirm this. You need both services.

Incorrect. Even if you need both, it doesn't mean it's rolled out everywhere. I have both and do not have the feature yet.

And the guy said it will be rolling out everywhere very soon.

Bottom line is that your in luck. You WILL be able to use the service.

Me on the other hand can't. No matter where I live.

From »www.optimum.com/io/dvr/index.jsp

"Store up to 100 hours of Standard Definition Television programming and 24 hours of HD programming!"

You can however, add an external hard drive which would give you more space.

So on this entire thread, I'm the ONLY one that is upset that you NEED both IO & Optimum Onlines Services to use this WebTV?

No one here sees the problem with this?

Anyone care to explain to me how you need the Optimum Online Service, because it makes ZERO technical sense.

If you can access ANY computer AND register (free to any Cablevision customer - using your account # and making a user ID) to pay your bills & such. Then why can't you use this service?

From any computer you program the WebTV tool. Then it goes to Cablevision, THEN Cablevision sends the signal to your DVR.

Your computer doesn't directly control you DVR. Cablevision does. Its just like calling up for Pay Per View. Your use your phone & Cablevision does the rest from their offices. You go thru them.

So I ask why do you need the Online Service. Its not like your modem at home talks to your DVR. The commands are ALL coming from Cablevision offices/centers. to your DVR set top box.

What's so hard to understand? It's a value added benefit to those who subscribe to both. Sort of like how triple play users get the Optimum Rewards Card and Caller ID on the TV.

Could they let non-OOL users have it? Sure, but it sure gives customers an incentive to stick with or to switch to OOL if this is a 'must-have' feature for someone.

I can understand why you are upset, but I an also understand why, as a company, we are only rolling it out to those who subscribe to multiple services.

I still haven't heard anything about needing both iO and OOL btw, so the rep you spoke with MAY be mistaken. This type of detail is something I would normally know about. We'll see I guess.

The service is going to follow the phased roll out Cablevision is famous for. New Jersey customers should be live as of 8/6. NYC, Westchester and Connecticut should be able to access the service by 8/18. Long Island is going to have to wait until 9/1.

roll out schedule isnt fully correct...All of NJ isn't live. NYC West Chester should be 2 weeks longer than the 18th. And Long Island is correct date. EVERYTHING should be fully implemented on 9/1. There may be straggling areas though...

He asked, can the web interface do searches and how does it work it relation to the scheduling? The Web interface allows searches, now I don't have the DVR interface yet so I didn't answer his question since I don't know for sure how it will interact with the DVR. I see no reason someone can not easily do a search and use that to add the program but until I have the interface I can not be sure.

Maybe someone that has the DVR interface can do a keyword search and tell us how it works with the DVR.

you can do a search of tv listings and then record them. however, it can only record a program set to air within the next 7 days.

I have also noticed the following changes since the DVR update for the Web DVR tool:

1. The new channel guide data is downloaded each night without me forcing it. No more - "Data loading - please wait" or " No data available".

2. While you are watching a program press "C" on the DVR remote. A new menu bar will pop up and you can scroll left or right with about 6-7 options to pick from. The ones that I remember are:

top picks - PPV movie info
coming soon - PPV movie info
local - news, traffic and weather on the bottom of your screen as you watch your program.

It works, I just tried it. I live in the Oakland system(Washington Twp)NJ. I have (2)DVR's and it tells me whats on both already, and whats scheduled to be recorded. I made a test for tonight and then checked with the DVR and it;s their for tonights recording. It will only allow you to pick within 7 days to record a program but this thing is awsome.

One step forward - the duplicate premiums in the 700's have disappeared.
One step backward - the Web DVR feature is not available for the next week.

"Between August 18 and August 25, changes are being made to the channel lineup. To ensure your programs on this channel are properly recorded, use your iO DVR cable box to set your recordings during this transition."

I just spoke to a Cable Vision Rep (Aug. 23, 2009 at 4:45pm) this service will not be available until Aug. 27, 2009 in the Brooklyn area, he said some parts of NJ are working, the reason for the delay is because the movement of the HD channels line up, cable vision also added a portal, by pressing the C on your remote a small menu will come on the bottom of your TV screen and you will be able select what option you want to see, but this has nothing to do with the web based DVR recording schedule. I hope this helps.

That sounds like bs they gave you. First off, all they did was remove duplicates premium channels that were on the 700s and two, that shortcuts menu has nothing to do with the Web DVR as you pointed out and is insignifcant.

They can't ever just tell it how it really is to their customers.

Yes that is the right place. When I click the link there is a DVR tab on the page. Using the DVR webapp I have been able to schedule a recording and cancel an existing scheduled recording. The only thing I haven't been able to do is delete content from the DVR.

One nice feature with the webapp is when you select a show to record you have the option of adding a few minutes to the start/end times for the show! No more missing a few minutes of the show you want to record because American Idol (or whatever) runs long.

Everyone is different, for me it is great. I'm on the computer all day. I have no reason to log out of the OOL website, since if someone had access to my computer they could read the mail via my client. I have a bookmark to go directly to the listing, I can scroll through them easier via the web interface, search for shows and lastly the DVR is not where my computer is located. All of this makes it much easier for me to program through the web interface then through the DVR.

It's great if you are on the road a lot or work late. Last week I was in San Diego and remembered I wanted to see Michael Vick's return and was able to program it for the Eagles game in no time. I was in the air during the game so by the time I returned it was all recorded and ready to go.

I don't think it is meant to replace using the guide when you are in front of the TV, but when not home it is great.

Re: Web DVR Information

One thing it offers (but I couldn't get to work yet) is the ability to delete content in bulk from the DVR. We went away on holidays and I forgot to cancel a few scheduled recordings and came back to 95 episodes of Stargate SG-1 and 50 episodes of House... Anyone that has had to delete multiple recordings at once should appreciate this feature (once it works).

And searching the TV listings online is also WAAAY better than the lame search feature on the interactive guide.

I don't think there's been an actual release date, has there? I mean there's been posts by people 'in the know' at Cablevision, but, since there hasn't been an "official" press release or anything yet, give em a chance. That's probably why they launch stuff in different areas at different times. Work out the bugs, get it working, etc. I am sure once it is fully deployed in all areas it will work. There's obviously going to be some bugs to work out, but you can't really complain about a feature that's not really official yet in my opinion.

Look at the new webmail interface. It worked for what, two days before it disappeared?

Not surprising at all. For me, the Web DVR Scheduler is a thing of myth at this point, only spoken of in hushed tones by those whose credibility is somewhere below that of those who claim to have sighted the Loch Ness monster. The screenshots? Fabricated using Photoshop. The discussion? Rantings of crazy people. Maybe there will be some real evidence by October. Of 2011. And then maybe, maybe it'll be made available a few years later.

Of course, by that time, I'll have FiOS anyway.

Call to support got it working for me.

For a few weeks, I've had the DVR tab goes to home page issue. (I'm in Northern Westchester). Yesterday, I called. 45 minutes on the phone. got connected to a second level person who used screen sharing to convince himself that what I reported was true. He fiddled, then said he needed to escalate. Asked for my primary account password. So I changed it and gave him a temp password.

Maybe a co-incidence? But this morning it works! Yeh. It's really a great feature to be able to use the on line guide and schedule recording.

I have two DVR's, and even that works!

Good stuff.

One curiosity. It thinks the controlling account is not my OOL primary, but a UID which is both a secondary email and my cablevision account. Have no idea what's going on, but I had to log in to that account to activate. The activation with another account didn't stick.

Web DVR isn't working for me even though it finally looks like it's been activated for my account. I can see both DVRs, I can see what programs are on them and what's scheduled to be recorded.

I go to the online guide at optimum.net, I pull up a show, when the box pops up, it says Record to iO DVR, tells me what users can do with the remote dvr and has a box to Accept Terms of Use.

I click that to accept and click yes to Want to Opt in. After a few seconds, the exact same screen comes back.

I do have cookies locked down pretty good (though I allow cookies for the optimum.net domain) and I tried in both FF, Opera and IE.

Re: Web DVR Information

They should all be able to change the DVR but there are 2 different places that effect which IDs are allowed. Under TV listing there is a setting for Administrative Access, which I believe is which ID can change the "Online Preferences". Under the DVR tab there is a setting for who can control the DVR programs under "Online Preferences", you can also change the name for the DVR in that section. My primary ID is not listed under "Online Preferences" but it can control the DVR, so I assume it should be able to control it by default. I am not sure what happened in your case.

It either loops back to the home page or when I go to terms of service there is no place to accept and activate. I've tried in Firefox and IE.

Same as Lex Luthor, I try and activate and it just sits.

How about some testing, Cablevision? I mean really....what a nice feature - but it doesn't work!

Works fine for me. Sounds like a user error!

If it's still not working, I'd contact CV via direct forum or call in, as something may need to be updated or fixed on your account specifically.

It works great for me, too.

Don't know why I'm replying to anonymous but yeah....ok...user error...I am unable to check a box that says "Yes I agree" and click a button.

I've tried rebooting my box and to activate when it's on - no dice. Maybe I'll call in one of these days.

We are all anonymous. After all this is an internet forum. I don't know who you are either. I really think it must be something you are doing wrong. Have you checked your browser settings: pop up blocker / cookies ?

Probably nothing. More than a couple of people having the same problem.

I know, at least with the problems I'm having, that I'm not doing anything wrong.

Re: Web DVR Information

I'm a network / pc tech who has tried to get this to work using IE, Firefox, Safari, and Opera I've tried from 3 different computers and via 3 different ISP's. When I called cablevision, the support person tried with my id from the cablevision office and could not access this feature. So anyone who can not access should contact Cablevision support and ask them to do something about this. And those individuals here who can use this feature, should not assume user error for those who can not. Its a new service and its implementation is buggy.

After they website issue is fixed and you can log in and set the changes, power cycle your DVR box or boxes for a couple seconds[default 10] and and it should work. If you have any issues with it, power cycle the boxes and it should clear it up. Apparently the online dvr "can't communicate with the box"

I did nothing wrong and it still does not work. Tried on 5 different isp's (3 being ool) with a minimum of 7 different pc's. Still wanna think it's me doing something wrong?

IE 6 - 7 - 8
windows xp - vista - 7
os x 10.1
latest os x

just plain doesn't work for me....could be my account, my cable box...no clue. I'm absolutely positively sure its nothing I'm doing wrong. Thanks for calling me an idiot....

I still have to click that Activate button each time I come back to that DVR screen.

You'd think they could have fixed that by now.

Anyone tried this from a mobile browser? Looks like the pages are very "heavy" and probably wouldn't work great with most mobile browsers.

Yes, that ability was removed for some reason. On top of that, if you already had remove channels, it didn't default back to all channels. You have no way to add those channels back.

works via my T-Mobile G1. very cool.

It should tell you the end time instead of Length before you schedule it.

Game 2 of the World Series tonight.
Shows:

Air Date: Thur 10/29 7:30 PM
Channel: 705 FOXD
Length: 180 mins
Genre: Sports
First Aired: Oct 29 2009

After you schedule, it shows

basically the same stuff...but also
Start: 07:30 PM
Stop: 10:30 PM

Re: Web DVR Information

The mobile link is:

»m.optimum.net

The options are:

E-Mail
DVR
Search
Weather
Traffic
Movies

As you can see there is not an option for TV listings. The options in the DVR link are:

Find Programs to Record

Recorded Programs
Scheduled Recordings

You must first search for a program using "Find Programs to Record" and then schedule a recording. You can't view all shows at a particular time and schedule a recording.

And after the "upgrade" I am no longer able to delete anything from my DVR on the web. And the new feature that lists programs by channel is completely useless. Put the cursor over the channel number to see what I mean.

from another thread on the guide, it works:

While you're in the TV Listings page, click on Settings. Click the name of the account that you're currently logged in, turn on Parental Controls, and click Edit next to Channels. Select all of the channels you don't want the TV Listings to show and click the Save button. And you're done.
