Has AT&T lowered the DS throughput speed for Xtreme 6.0?
Or is there just something wrong that needs to be looked into?

My IP address used to start with a 68, 72, 74 and maybe some others but never a 98 and my gateway address used to be 68.208.248.2 and now my IP address is 98.80.XXX.XXX and my gateway address is 98.80.XXX.XXX.
The exact second I restarted my modem and got the new IP and gateway address is when my downstream speed dropped about 590kbps to 720kbps depending on if I'm running PPPoA or PPPoE.
This problem doesn't affect just me as it also affects other FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0 customers in my town.
It doesn't yet affect all FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0 customers in my town.
It effects people with IP and gateway addresses other then the the one I have.
This is not an end user problem. It is an AT&T problem.
I don't believe this problem is caused by overloaded equipment. It's my belief that the speeds are being throttled. Maybe someone set the limit to low.
Note: Things run very smooth now. Jitter is very low. Pings are better and I went from 10ms to my gateway to 6ms to my gateway.
I'm not complaining about how it runs. It runs great. Things run much better than they did before the change.
I and the people that asked me to get to the bottom of things are complaining about the 11% speed hit on the downstream side. We ain't paying 11% less.

It does not surprise that speeds are being lowered but you will not see them lowering the southeast pricing to the prices they charge in TEXAS, THIS IS A SCREWING EVERYBODY COMPANY.

I Will check tonight to see if my IP address has changed and report back. Edit... It looks like my IP address still begins with 66 (I think it was 68.* before) and my gateway address seems to be very different from it was before, I need to find my old record saved some where to compare.
I, for one, definitely noticed the download speed has dropped (from 6.4-6.5 mbps to 5.5 - 5.7mbs, I do speed tests from time to time and the pattern is very clear). The latency has improved from 20ms to 10ms (as reported by speedtest.net - the server is within 20miles from my home)
I am in Mableton/Smyrna GA.
To AT&T's credit, the service has been steady (two real problems over the past 2 years) so I have not considered complaining or switching yet (no good alternative for us).
I don't know if it has to do with the fact that U-verse is now available in neighborhood recently.

I have Extreme 6.0 in Acworth, GA (just north of Atlanta). Today I am seeing speeds that benchmark at around 500k. Prior to when AT&T started rolling out Uverse, I was consistently testing at 6.2 down. Uverse started rolling out in Atlanta, and my speeds went down to around 5.0. Now today, it's completely in the toilet. The AT&T speed site shows me getting 550k down, while another independent test site shows 1.1mb down. I can't call support, because India will be freaking useless in resolving this. This really sucks.

I'm seeing the same issue just outside of Albany, GA. Speeds should be Extreme 6.0, but I'm getting around 550k to 350k.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get this issue resolved? Like if we call tech support, what do we say?

I'm actually going to phone right now. Hopefully enough reports come in, where the Indian support will escalate it to the USA techs.
I'm getting very fast pings from the ATT gateway, but still testing at 500-800k download speeds. On hold now with overseas (India) support, they don't see any network trouble reports. Now there's a shock...

Yeah, my speeds are sitting at 482.5 Kbps download / 430.2 Kbps upload according to Bellsouth's fastaccess speed test site. I'm pulling one of those new IP addresses with 98. at the start, though. Haven't ever seen that before today.

They installed the equipment for Uverse in my s/d back in Feburary/March of this year. An ATT guy came to the door back then to tell us it was being installed in our neighborhood and should be available in March. As of today, it's still not available, yet the line speed has become really crappy ever since then.

I and the other people in my town that share the same problem have had our downstream throughput speed decrease from 6500kbps to 5780kbps.
The people that are having problems with the massive speed decrease need to look at the FAQ below.

I don't know when you noticed the price increase (or when it happened), but I lost my $5.00 per month discount for also being an AT&T Mobility (Cingular) customer when the name of my DSL service changed from "BellSouth StandAlone FastAccess" to "AT&T DSL Direct". I suspect that legacy BellSouth discounts and bundle prices are being phased out (if there are actually any still in effect).

My speeds went back up late this afternoon to 5.5m, after bottoming out at 500k. That's still slower than the 6.2m I was consistently getting for about 5 years straight before UVerse started rolling out here this year. I think I'll be looking at Comcast sometime soon to see if they do any better in my neighborhood than AT&T is doing. Seems like every time AT&T gets involved with anything, it turns to crap. Like when they bought out IBM's Internet Service back in the 90's, I only started having problems after the acquisition. Then they bought my cable company, and the problems started. Now the AT&T umbrella rakes in Bellsouth, and my DSL has turned to crap. Thanks bunches, AT&T.

I'm in Alpharetta GA and having major problems. You guys with Ultra are lucky only getting a 500 Kb/s drop. I have DSL Lite, I'm supposed to get 768 Kbps down, which is good enough for us, right now I'm getting 153 Kbps down. It's like browsing on the old 28.8 modems, it's painful.
Over the past two weeks I noticed getting a lot of page timed outs and then last night my download dropped to next to nothing. I believe it may have something to do with the Uverse roll-out. At 7am this morning I did a speed test that registered as 614 Kbps. By 10am I was down to 112 Kbps. I surmise that's when most people have turned on their TV's.
I think they have chopped a little of the speed off all the plans so they have it for the Uverse thing. We called tech support earlier (never realized all their support was abroad, don't Americans need jobs right now?) and they are sending out a tech tomorrow but I know they would never admit to doing what they are doing and I am pretty sure the tech will just say it's our PC. We are going to call billing and complain.
Probably going end up going back to Comcast.

Suspecting, as others have, that the severe decrease in AT&T DSL speeds has something to do with Uverse (which as I understand it is basically TV over DSL), I have been doing speed tests since we called foreign tech support yesterday.
08/13/2009
7:00am (using speed Flash test on this site) 620k down
12:50pm (Flash test on this site) 150k down
2:00pm (using AT&T speed test) 304k down

6:30pm - AT&T test timed out and blamed me for not installing Java
6:41pm (Flash test on this site) 167k down
9:17pm PRIME TIME....
--- AT&T test timed out and blamed me for not installing Java
--- (Flash test on this site) 39k down
10:26pm - AT&T test timed out and blamed me for not installing Java
11:36pm (AT&T speed test) 445k down
--- (Flash test on this site) 239k down
08/14/2009
12:20am (AT&T speed test) 505k down
5:56am (AT&T speed test) 645k down
7:21am (AT&T speed test) 649 down
I have not been able to use my internet connection for two days now. Maybe in this economy they don't need my business, they must be doing really well with Uverse. I wonder what the tech is going to say when I show him this information?
Comcast isn't too bad in my area, only reason we left them is because we didn't need cable TV (seriously, 199 channels of either the same exact shows or reality tv), don't need home phone (whats the deal with bundling?) and they wanted to raise internet to $50+ a month. Looked into Clear but I see more complaints about that service than praises... Anyone else notice how these corporations hardly compete in pricing with each other?
Oh, and...
8:00am AT&T test timed out and blamed me for not installing Java
8:06am (AT&T speed test) 231k down
And thus it begins anew.

Re: Has AT&T lowered the DS throughput speed for Xtreme 6.0?
I have also noticed a decrease in download speed for my 6.0 meg connection. I test via the Atlanta Speakeasy site and sometimes the old FastAccess site. I routinely saw 6.3 - 6.4 megabits/sec down from Speakeasy. The FastAccess site usually tested about 6 or 5.8.
For the record, my modem stats are 17 dB downstream attenuation and I sync at 8128 on Fast Path. I am 2,668 cable feet away from the DSLAM (verified with a line tech one day while he was using his TDR meter to find and fix a problem). Downstream S/N is 16 dB. These settings have been this way for 3 years, so my physical loop is probably not a factor in my speed drop.
Beginning about a month ago for me, my new download speed hovers around 5.7 megabits/sec from Speakeasy in Atlanta. I've tested many, many times at vastly different times of the day to sort of rule out heavy load periods, but I get the same results. I've tried both PPPoA and PPPoE and see the same speeds with either. I've tried two different modems (Westell 6100 and Netopia 2241N that I purchased myself online) and get the same results with either.
My deduction from this experimentation -- AT&T has fiddled around with the rate limiting settings for my connection and apparently for others as well based on the posts in this thread.

I would have posted this sooner but the line was down most of the day...
AT&T tech called my wife early this morning and told her it was equipment malfunction. She explained about the major drops during peak TV viewing hours and he said he was sure that Uverse had nothing to do with it and that it was just coincidence but if repairing this equipment did not fix our problem they would see what they could do about boosting our speed... My wife also called billing and got a credit back. Now I remember other reason we left Comcast, they would never admit fault come hell or high water!
Everything seems to be working fine now (getting 658k down) and I'm glad it looks like I won't be switching, I can't imagine spending more than $20 a month on internet.

Interesting, many of us are seeing about 1 Mbps slower while a few are still getting 6.5.
It could just be general congestion or some sort of traffic shaping (perhaps in congested areas). I guess we'll never know. The info doesn't seem as open as it used to be.

Reason I ask is that I changed my email password on AT&T Yahoo Mail website and had to also change the DSL password stored in my modem/ router. Why would Yahoo webmail server care about the DSL password in my DSL modem that interfaces with FastAccess network?
And I'm now on the ad-supported AT&T Yahoo Mail servers... just like the AT&T Yahoo DSL customers... but we are paying a higher price for our service than other states. Looks more and more like we are getting the same service as other states that sell "AT&T Yahoo DSL Service", but we are paying the higher rate for "FastAccess DSL Service", but it looks more and more like AT&T Yahoo.

Your AT&T PPPoE login credentials are the same as your primary email credentials, and your WiFi authentication credentials. This is authenticated by the same att.net RADIUS server whether you are checking email, connecting via DSL modem, connecting via analog dialup, or connecting via WiFi. This is so whether or not you have migrated to the ATT/Yahoo platform.
BellSouth used to allow you to set your primary email password to a different value than your PPPoE/Dialup password, but AT&T does not.

It has been ever thus, since SBC negotiated the co-branding agreement with Yahoo!. Do keep in mind:
SBC bought AT&T, so whatever SBC policies were, AT&T policies now are.
The original name of the co-branded service was, "SBC Yahoo! DSL Service". The new name of the co-branded service is, "at&t Yahoo! HSI".
So far, the local Bellsouth transit network has not been changed to reflect the former SBC Internet Services (SBCIS) way; including how the aggregation routers are set up. The two are different Autonomous Systems.

I would be more inclined to suspect changes in the way the loops are provisioned. Bellsouth and SBC provisioned their loops in different ways. AT&T is likely trying to do it all the old SBC way (considering that it was SBC which bought AT&T) in all regions.

I've been a DSL customer for about 9 years now and Comcast is starting to look like it might be worth a switch. Faster speeds now and an upcoming upgrade schedule that is a little more tangible.

Thanks for the info....
But I'm too competitive and inquisitive to sit by and and accept defeat after the speed change occured....I'll probably stop tweaking when I get a speed test to show '6.0' or better...I can't give up just because Bellsouth throttled me :)
btw It appears that the westell 6100 modem kncoks 8 off of whatever mtu is set in the computer nic settings...I guess it figures the computers will be set at 1500....the tcp analyser always shows 8 less than whatever I set....i.e. I set 1492, it'll show 1484.....(That was puzzling for awhile)
I have the recieve window at 255552 I believe.....I hate I have to work 2nd shift today or I'd re-experiment with the mtu and rwin settings again....Guess it'll be later tonight..

What Airwolf was saying is that your problem is physical, not a matter of tweaks. Tweaks do not affect the sync speed of your modem. You can tweak all day and all night but until whatever is causing your modem to sync lower than it should is fixed, it won't make a difference.

Re: Has AT&T lowered the DS throughput speed for Xtreme 6.0?
I have also been seeing inconsistent download speeds over the last month or 2.
I have the 6Meg and use to always get this ... and I tested often.
- I have been with Bellsouth/ATT for about 8 or 9 years now.
I suspect ATT's network is suffering from U-Verse and the iPhones. When the new iPhone 3GS came out in June, ATT said the new feature to send MMM (Multi Media Messages) will not be possible until the end of August when they expect to fix the network issues (not enough capacity).
- ATT is the ONLY ISP (globally) not allowing MMM on iPhone .
- They have oversold their stuff to the point it is breaking our good old Bellsouth da'ys performance!
Lately, my testing every day shows a pattern ... I am lucky if I get over 2.5Meg download during "peak times".
And I am surprised if I don't get the old 6Meg download during "non-peak times".
I have tested with MANY variations ... 4 test sites, 4 different computers (not counting iPhone) and 4 different operating systems, unplug everything and replug, and more ... no luck!
Charter is offering 20Meg download NOW in my area and I am getting it installed asap.
I will keep the DSL for a month or 2 ... just in case I have to cancel the Charter setup for poorer performance ... but seems unlikely... I hope not likely.
I have been patiently waiting for higher DSL download speeds with zero luck. U-Verse is suppose to be coming but I have several issues with this "totally new" service.
And I really don't like the trend of ATT becoming a monopoly again .. buying Bellsouth buying Cingular ... and packages that make NO sense like the ONE (1) package for Internet on the iPhone at $30/Month !!!
Are these guys trying to get rid of loyal customers ?

Well its only fair to post ATT did something on their end to allow more bandwidth to reach my location. I called when my download speeds dropped to the low 4's. I have had a tremendous speed drop also.
About 2-3 Weeks ago I started getting speed drops.
This made Youtube/streaming video load extremly slow.
I checked and at 3 weeks ago U-verse became avalible to my general area.
Now I do not have Xtreme 6.0 but I used to average out at about 4 Mbps and about a 35(ish)kbps
Now my speeds have dropped to this.
I think it has something to do with U-Verse because of the other members having problems. I'm going to call AT&T out and see if they can look at it.
(I really hate AT&T/Bellsouth. I would switch to Charter Cable Internet if I wasn't just 8 inches past the limit line. :/

I finally took the time to call ATT tech support for my current problem of inconsistent speeds.
They did something to my "profile" and my speeds are consistent again at pretty close to the 6Meg download I pay for.
I must admit ATT DSL tech support works pretty good.
The tech put in on an Email list for when U-verse becomes available for me, but still no "hint" at when this might be.
Fyi ...
I put this off because the last time (lots of disconnects and inconsistent speeds) it took more than 1 call for an hour or so per call and they had to send a tech support to my home.
- There was more than 1 issue causing my problems then.
- But I must admit, the tech support guy was extremely good in catching one of the issues causing some of the problems.
- I had recently moved and was using an old modem AC adapter which was causing the issue ... MY FAULT.

In a roundabout sort of way. Uverse only requires conditioning of the F2, the copper from a cross-connect to the premises. They pull fiber to that cross-connect (actually, to a VRAD adjacent to the cross-connect; and patch the VRAD to the F2 in the cross-connect).
The consequence is that, for DSL connections with a respectable F1 (cross-connect back to the CO), but an F2 in bad shape, Uverse can actually even improve the DSL side.
But, for DSL connections with a bad F1, no amount of conditioning of the F2 will help, and DSL will appear to be "affected" by Uverse (because, for AT&T, Uverse is the future).

Sometimes it takes a going through a few techs to get someone that will actually care enough to see what the problem is. I went through he** in the past couple years where techs treated my Mom and I so rudely and kept saying it was our computers causing the problem.
In March of this year after putting up with utter nonsense that we shouldn't have, I called back after almost a year of not bothering to even try to deal with them anymore and was so relieved when a guy that had never been here before came. He was so nice, patient and kind, he spent almost an hour outside checking things and found that the issue we had been having for almost 2 years had been an issue on their side the entire time. He was shocked when I told him about how other techs had treated us and the things that were said.
In hindsight I wish that I had pressed the issue more earlier with the rude techs that came out, but it's hard to report these people and have something actually come of it. I'm just glad to have the issues resolved now with the exception of issues during rainstorms sometimes.
I hope that you can get your issues resolved too.

If it works fine when directly connected to your modem, I wouldn't be holding out any hope that it's going to get fixed by AT&T. That sounds to me like a pretty good indication that there's no issue with their service.

Are you are saying that things work perfectly fine and speeds are fast while the computer is directly connected to the modem but after putting the router back into the loop things start working crappy and speeds are slow again?
If this is the case then it is not AT&T's problem. It is your problem. AT&T does not fix problems that they are not responsible for.
If you start a new thread about your problem then maybe we can help you do some troubleshooting and get you fixed up.

Three new routers but you are still having the same problems. I assume wireless routers and you are connected to them using a wireless connection.
Check things out with your computer connected to the wireless router using an Ethernet cable. Your computer could have a bad/misconfigured wireless card or there could be lots of noise on the radio frequency used by the wireless router.
.

From a search at en.wikipedia.org I see "The WRT54G-TM (TM stands for T-Mobile)..." ... So this worked at one time on an AT&T network ? Just seems little odd ...
For the "WRT54G", I am wondering if possibly the issue is the age of the router? The original WRT54G was first released in December 2002.
Earlier this year, I had an issue with my WRT54G router and the only solution was to replace the router. It was working fine for years on AT&T/Bellsouth DSL Xtreme. And then it seemed all of a sudden for no reason (to me anyway), it just had all kinds of issues ... speed and disconnects. I also checked for the latest firmware and I already had it from an upgrade to the firmware many years ago, so no new firmware released in years.
I replaced this router with a newer version from Linksys (WRT610N) which is kinda expensive but there are many other models that are cheaper.
Have not had any issue since I replaced the very old WRT54G router.

Did you sneak into my house & replace my equipment with your equipment! (HAHA)
I had/have the exact same Linksi & did exactly what you did (ran out to Wally World & picked up a 610 for 109 just last night).
I guess it really was time for the old WRT54G to crap out. I must say, the new Linksys is like a breath of fresh air. I have not checked my speeds in probably two years, but I will tonight.
It would seem to me that the larger point, that AT&T is dancing around here, is a viable upgrade path for internet only customers. That is to say, I have no interest in U-verse because for me D* is superior. IMHO, AT&T is trying to 'cheap' their way into a FTTH network & until they ACTUALLY arrive at FTTH I will have no interest in them for anything other than just plain jane internet. Unfortunately for me, it would appear that AT&T feels the exact same way about me & all their other ISP only customers as well.
Alas, I really do not want to engage Charter (the cable co in my area) for what is undeniably better ISP service so here I sit, in my Mexican Standoff eating barbecued iguana.

I try not to sneak into other houses too often ;-)
I did not realize the WRT54G had/has so many "versions" which could be much newer, as it sounds like is the case for atrayu.
But, yes sounds like we had a similar experience with this hardware use and change ... worked great for many years but it was time for our old WRT54G to crap out.
And, I also have noticed quite an improvement using the new WRT610N, especially inside my network at home from computer to computer file transfers.
On the larger point, I also prefer to have separate providers for ISP and TV ... home phone is not important anymore. I see so much waste and it seems so insane that TelCos and Cable companies BOTH are eventually putting fiber to the same homes. I say eventually but that is not true for everyone .. depends on the whim of the ISP companies which is ridiculous!
FTTH is needed yesterday and other countries are deploying quicker .. and yes they have less country to cover maybe but it still is crazy that the country that created the Internet (USA) has to be what like LAST to get FTTH for everyone (or at least for most).
Anyway, I hear that ATT does not allow getting just U-Verse for just ISP but they do allow dropping the TV after a month. So, if/when ATT makes U-Verse available to my home, I might try it out assuming there is no contract required which is what I have heard. And if I try it and if I can drop the TV , then maybe I will stay with them ... it would be nice to just have a CHOICE one day!
I am also currently "trying" to get Charter to service my home today .. this takes a while even though neighbor across the street has the service I want ... I am seeing progress finally (stuff outside being done).
Currently/today there is NO competition to my home for ISP ... it is ATT DSL or maybe satellite which is too slow for me.

Why would they send a 2210 to replace a 2Wire? After we increased the speed the tech support person I chatted with called me back and asked if I got the 2Wire replacement modem he sent out. It turned out to be a 2210 again. I called back and got a woman who knew what she was doing and noticed that the previous guy who had tried twice to send out the 2Wire but instead sent out 2210 modems had been putting in to send out a modem and not a gateway.
If you told you were going to get a replacement 2Wire call back in the daytime in the afternoon (that's when I get American people) and tell them you need to be sent a replacement gateway.
I ended up having to return the 2 2210 modems that were sent out by mistake. They didn't give me long enough to get them out and charged by bill $75, so now I have to call about that too.
I've been having to call them about billing concerning DSL and home phone way to often....

Re: Has AT&T lowered the DS throughput speed for Xtreme 6.0?

Re: Has AT&T lowered the DS throughput speed for Xtreme 6.0?
I am DSL illiterate. (computer illiterate also). We recently had the second slowest DSL and was having problems with "lag" while playing X Box 360 Live. So we upgraded to AT&T DSL Extreme 6.0 to try and stop this problem. It did not work and actually, our service got worse. While playing online, the phone rings for a normal phone call, it knocks me completely offline. I get a "connection interrupted" signal. I do not know enough about DSL to fill a thimble. Anyone have any recommendations?
