Is the planet Mars visible from here?

I keep getting conflicting information. Supposedly, the improved visibility issue was a part of an urban legend.

But I can see something bright to the east of me, early evening and late morning before sunup. I don't think that it's a star.

Re: Is the planet Mars visible from here?

In August 2003 Mars was the closest it will be to Earth in our lifetime, but it is still visible now.
Look to the east-southeast portion of the sky. Mars is usually low above the horizon. The farther north from the equator, the lower Mars will appear in the sky. Mars is the red planet and will be seen as red when viewed with a telescope. If viewing with the naked eye, it may appear to be a more pale yellow or orange color.

Mars has been visible since humans first looked up at the night sky. It has a distinctive rusty hue. Due to our orbits, it's sometimes closer and sometimes farther away, but it's always visible from the right vantage point.

I think the "urban legend" you're referring to is some email floating around about it now. Mars was at its closest point to Earth in recent history back in 2003, not now.

Nice possibilities, thanks. Wish it wasn't so cloudy tonight, I might try to compare the display with reality.

Sounds like Venus, should be bright white vs. muddy red of Mars.

Not sure about Mars.

But, on clear, crisp nights I've heard that many in Benicia can see Uranus!

WTF.

I keep my pants on, when I'm outdoors.
Generally. Certainly, on clear, crisp nights.
