I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

Every single night for the last 3 years my DSL drops connection for a minute. It ONLY happens once every night between the times of 10:30pm-11pm. But 85% of the time is is right on the dot of either 10:45 or 11:00.

I have been in 5 online chats with AT&T tech support. I lost count of how many phone calls to both AT&T and the people in charge of the lines. As well as having 4 different repair techs come to the house and check out the service hub of the area.

I have replaced to modem, but the problem still happened from day 1. I have tried the power cycle the modem at different times of the day to no effect. I have forced it to change IP addresses to try and reset my lease time, but no change. The cabled outside the house have been completely replaced and all the inside lines have been checked. I have even made sure the modem was the only thing plugged into ANY of the phone jacks in the house during the time frame. and still nothing. And then repeated it without the router. We don't have anything in the house going off at that time, and the satellite TV is not plugged into a phone line.

Every time I call them now they say the same old crap and dont listen to me when I tell them the problem is not in the house or the surrounding lines. I have dont countless searches online and found nobody with the exact same problem as me.

Does anybody have any thoughts!? Because I have officially run out of ideas!

»Ameritech - SBC FAQ »My DSL loses sync regularly. How can I detect interference with an AM Radio?

Fire up a portable AM radio about 10:40PM. When your modem loses sync, listen for interference and figure out where it's coming from [neighbor's motion-sensor floodlight turns on when someone walks their dog by the driveway, perhaps?].

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

That was one discussion I had with a higher level support tech.

My house is on top he top of a large hill with a 2 acre yard. Nearest house is at lest 100 yards away. And if you go to the bottom of the main road, there is no walkways for people to be on.

If it were something like lights turning on you would think there would be at least a few days where it wouldn't happen, or happen more than once. And if it were a hardware issue, shouldn't the problem be more random?

Happening every night for 3 years like clockwork seems to be point toward a system issue. But what station should the radio device be turned to? and what do i listen for?

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

DHCP lease timeout, perhaps? Your modem (and router and possibly the computer itself) leases the IP for a specific period -- typically one day -- and when that time ends it releases and renews that IP. Usually this is a transparent process, but perhaps for some piece of equipment in your household this is not so.

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

That is what I have thought it to be, and what my current thinking is. But I am not 100% sure what time it does this. I know I am on the plan that DOES to renew every day. And I have tried to call the ISP, and the tech I spoke to talked to a T2 level person. And they said they are unable to change the time this happens. (I asked them to change to 5am)

Do you know of any way I can change the renew time?

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

Hey Slamscape, do you have a Direct TV reciever? It may be doing an up load at that time, and is it filtered? Just a thought some monitoring systems, even or especially alarms ,if not filtered will knock out a signal. Also wireless routers are 2.4 ghz and cordless phones can also cause interference like the other poster said. The DSL modem links with a card and ALWAYS is linked. Unless a test is initiated the link is continuous. Hope this helps.

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

The satellite receiver is not plugged into any phone lines. There are no cordless phones in the house aside from the cell phones, which have all been replaced since the time this started. And this still happens even if I remove the router from the picture. So it isn't the wireless signal.

But which card are you talking about?

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

card, in dslam or remote terminal when applicable, if you want, IM me the tel# and I'll see what I can find, need to register in order to do that and must be by tomorrow as I'm off for 2 weeks and my access to tools may be severely limited after that due to relocation..

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

Welcome to the group of frustrated 6mbps users. I have had the same problem for more than a year. I started with ATT and it was so bad at 1.5mbps I changed to Earthlink and after a couple of compalints it was all good. Att told me it was subleased from them when I had a problem then Earthlink made them fix it. ATT wont give higher speeds in my area to Earthlink so I came back. Every day about six times a day I reboot the modem via software and twice a week I need to reset the modem completely. I have the motorola 2100. Apparently best of ATT poc modems. I have spoken to ATT support many times and to T2 a few times. T2 admits that there are thousands of errors on the lines. They have tried re routing and changing my specific connections at the physical site locally. They admit that this sometime helps and it did for a while. Now I am looking for a better modem that is more tolerant of the multiple errors and can handle them without stalling like this line does. I agree that ATT support is the typical poorly designed simpleton at its worst. This is GM thinking all over again and we are the victims of this mess. I honestly believe that they dont think they are worse than there competition and believe it is too expensive to be good at what they do so they dont try to make it better or help their customers. . . . other opnions ???

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

I would look into a fresh new Netopia modem-router. These are supported by AT & T. Model 3347-2 or higher is the one to get for unstable lines. If this can't be had, a Speedstream 6520 would be one to get for line error correction. The Motorola you described is a simple modem that does not perform as well in my opinion for heavy internet usage.

Out of curiosity, did you get these modem recommendations from some review? If so, please post a link to it; I would like to read up on the differences between various modems.

Re: I Need Serious HELP! Connection Problem!

Good day Dave, For the AT & T DSL network in CT, the two modems I've recommended seems to work best, after several months of experimenting late last year and early this year. I've tried about 30 or so different brands/models during this time to come to the conclusion that the Netopia and Speedstream models above seem to work best in performance and throughput. About review sites, the one below is a bit old, but offers some detailed reviews. Believe it or not, the Zyxel Prestige 643 I've mentioned in the other thread is only one I've ever had trouble configuring.
