Yes vonage is allowed. Technically speaking as long as you have a decent upstream speed, and a consistent connection then vonage should work fine on any internet service. I don't know specifics but i think 128k upstream would be fine.

Suddenlink doesn't have a problem with customers using a VOIP service, such as Vonage, but please remember that VOIP services share your allocated internet bandwidth. Also, issues such as call quality would be supported by the VOIP provider, not Suddenlink.

On the other hand, Suddenlink's phone service operates on its own bandwidth, independent of your internet bandwidth, so the internet and phone usage don't affect each other. Suddenlink provides tech support for issues relating to Suddenlink's phone service.

That would be true if the cable Internet was running to spec, but in the case that there was an underlying problem that, say, was killing your bandwidth and affecting your VoIP as a result then that would be Suddenlink's responsibility to fix.

In this day and age the comparatively small amount of bandwidth that clear VoIP calls require is fairly trivial. From what I could find the average amount of bandwidth required for a VoIP call is 64-128kbits, which any broadband provider should be able to give you with ease.

I understand that you want to push Suddenlink's phone service though ;)

Very low latency is also important when talking about VOIP.

Try talking to someone on a satellite phone it's fun. The conversation is always a couple seconds behind :). By the time you answer them their already talking about something else.

Depending on your area, Suddenlink may or may not be reliable overall. If they're reliable overall, they'll have plenty of bandwidth for VoIP, which I've seen take at most around 80 kbps in each direction.

You could opt for SL's own service, but it's more expensive.

As far as other connection attributes than bandwidth, latency plays in a little, but honestly anything below 200ms is fine. Jitter and packet loss are killers though; as long as your connection passes packets in a reasonably predictable manner you're fine.

All I am going to say is, I have vonage, it works great.

The one thing I would do though is check to see what your connection speeds are through out the day. One place I lived in town with suddenlink the speeds tanked at peak hours, causing an spar attic issue with vonage. Since I changed where I live in Greenville, (not near town) the service has been more rock soild and vonage has been just as good.

Bare in mind that traffic shaping will always exist in some form or fashion. The ISP's want you to use their phone service :)
