Upstate SC - Install backlog - How far out is your install?
After patiently waiting and watching my neighborhood VRAD for probably more than 18 months, the happy day arrived on August 1st when the most wondrous email arrived, "U-Verse now available!"
Regretfully, I got sidetracked with what became the huge folly of trying to understand the various incentives and whether there was parity in pricing among the various marketing channels.
I placed an order last Saturday. The confirmed order came back with an install date of October 16th ... but I got it expedited to October 15th! This is only around a month and a half out ;-)
What's the lead time for other folks in Seneca/Clemson? The Greenville area?
---
See below for gory details about how the order-entry portal set me up for a huge disappointment.
Last Saturday (8/22), the order-entry portal used by the reseller offered available install dates of Friday (8/28) or on Saturday (8/29). When I checked back with the VAR on Monday (8/24), after the order had switched from "pending" to ""confirmed," the install date had magically changed to October 16.
Say what? Yes, around a month and half after the date that was suggested by the order-entry web app.

Yes, they're really backed up right now. Hopefully it will change in the near future, but for now that's about par for the course.

A glossy 24 page direct mail marketing item for U-Verse was in my mailbox today. I wonder how many new orders it might generate ... there goes the install queue!
I guess the marketing pundits don't really care about the amount of negative goodwill that a 45 day install lead time might generate.

No VRADs in sight at all on the east side of Greenville, so no chance of an install date for quite a while.

I ran into two AT&T ST's (from Georgia) that are working in this area. One had been assisting with an install in the Pickens area today.
While still on-site at the extremely lucky individual's residence, a neighbor dropped by and loved what they saw. The ST provided the number where orders could be placed. The install date was for something in November.

While I've been watching my VRAD for months (it's next to a DSLAM and crossbox), VRAD's can magically appear out in the wild all by their lonesome, provided fiber is available.
Those visiting the Clemson area for the upcoming football season can observe one of these magically appearing VRAD's. It is across the street from the Esso Club. Duke was pulling power to it this week and the AT&T techs have been busy working on it.

We've had Uverse since early spring in the Lake Wylie area. After about 2 weeks they upped our internet speed from 10 to 12 for no additional fee!

My co-worker who lives about 1 mile from downtown G'ville (off Rutherford road) had to wait...2 weeks from call to install. Said install went smoothly and he loves it so far.
Had his Uverse ordered around mid-August and installed on Aug 28.
I'm in Greer (north of 290) and no word if Uverse is in that area yet. :(

Re: Upstate SC - Install backlog - How far out is your install?
There is a VRAD across from the Esso Club?? Niiiiice!! I am moving into a house on Wigington St in the next few weeks. And I REALLY don't want to have to use DSL6.0 for very long, and I DON'T want to have to go with Northland or sign a 2-year contract with DTV.
The UV website has been saying "not available" for a while. And then last week, I talked to a tech who was at my in-laws house fixing their 2Wire and he said that, believe it or not, in-town residences would probably be delayed, because that area was being served straight from the CO on College Avenue. And then he said something about at&t trying to figure out how they can avoid renting out their lines to a 3rd party company that would turn around and re-sell the UV service for less than at&t would. I don't understand how THAT could happen. Anyway, he said that contrary to how it usually works, people in the country would be getting UV before people in town. Can somebody explain if this makes any sense?
And what do I do about TV? Northland's HD offerings are pitiful. And somebody mentioned that DTV through a bundle with at&t services was the way to go, because if UV came available, at&t could get you out of the 2 year contract with no penalty. I had heard that as well.... but apparently it is not true. What do I do?

SCHokie, I think AT&T, means for you to use the cashback to get out of a contract, because they can't get you out of a contract. They can't even get you out of a DTV contract you signed up for through them.

Re: Upstate SC - Install backlog - How far out is your install?
The VRAD is a recent install (from late July) and has probably not been brought on-line.
Clemson's CO is on Keith Street. I have colleagues on Wyatt and Woodland Way. At this time, they are too close to the CO and aren't able to order U-Verse.
Northland, indeed they are HD challenged, but what they do offer in this market is good. [In one of their non-Clemson/Seneca markets, Northland has a broader offering of HD channels that are available via a QAM tuner.]
I will be very interested in vetting the purported "compression issue" that some people report to exist with U-Verse and see how U-Verse compares to Northland's HD signal.

Re: Upstate SC - Install backlog - How far out is your install?
Thanks for the info. It makes sense that your colleagues on Wyatt and Woodland (East of CO) cannot get U-verse, if I can't either (West). I was looking at some houses on Riggs, and those houses are not qualified at this time, either.
How is it that you live too CLOSE to the CO, though? And how is this third party company that the Tech mentioned really playing into this? When they bring the VRAD on 93 online (as mentioned earlier), will UV be available in my neighbourhood?
A bit of info for those lucky enough to be waiting for the install, I talked to a guy in the ISDN department, and he said that at&t is HIRING installers, due to the massive response to U-verse. So they are trying their best. At least you are going to GET it, out "in the country". :) In town, I have to sit and wait... and use 6.0, and tough it out with Northland. Or pony up and buy all the DTV equip. And eat it later if I cancel. :(

Re: Upstate SC - Install backlog - How far out is your install?
The reference to "too close" is purely conjecture on my part and may be incorrect. If the CO is almost in one's backyard, wouldn't equipment, housed within its confines, provide the most efficient means of service? However, if the CO doesn't have capacity for new equipment ... maybe VRAD's are required.
One of Clemson's new subdivisions has promoted FTTH in its marketing literature. A third party company is referenced as being the manager/provider of the voice, data, and TV. Early indications from a marketing rep suggested that the service would be incorporated into the development's POA fee.

Re: Upstate SC - Install backlog - How far out is your install?
If your line is fed Directly from the CO without hitting a CrossBox (I'm in this club), your line therefore cannot be looped into a VRAD at a crossbox that doesn't exist.
Sometimes these cables/pairs are cut into a CrossBox, and then a VRAD placed at this new or expanded existing CrossBox.
If you live within 3000 ft of the CO itself (as the copper runs), I guess in theory you could have VDSL fed straight from the CO. No idea if there are VDSL Cards for feeding VDSL straight from the CO the same way that ADSL does. Not really my area of knowledge. All VDSL/FTTN/Copper U-Verse in my experience comes out of a Fiber-Fed VRAD

As far as I know, there aren't any 7330's in the CO's.

Re: Upstate SC - Install backlog - How far out is your install?
For several days last week, a tech was working at the VRAD across from the Esso. I stopped by and posed the question about U-Verse services for those that are "too" close to the CO. The tech confirmed that additional VRAD's would be deployed to provide U-Verse.
SCHokie: I asked about service for my colleague that lives on Wyatt/Woodland. The tech conferred with a peer. Strode Circle or somewhere behind the Clemson House is the most likely location for the VRAD's that will service Wyatt/Woodland.

jetfixer,
Where are you located in Clover? i am on HWY55 right at Paraham road. They have installed a new box to support U-verse but nothing is active. I cannot even get DSL right now because they will not hook me up till u-verse is active. TimeWarner wants $10000 for a drop to my house although there is RR and DSL all around me. very frustrating!!
