[TWC] Been trying to get a new ip , anyway ?

I turned off my modem for about 2hours & still no new ip.
I've had this same ip for the past 4 months since I got RR.
Any tips ?

Disconnect all devices from power, go to sleep, wake up, and re-connect. Worked for me once. Y do you need a new IP? The b word?

You need to change the MAC addrerss of the computer/router connected to the modem.

I didn't ever have to do that. I've changed IPs 2 times. Once, the 2001 power outage and the other about last year on purpose. No change in router.

He must have been banned from somewhere and the troll wants to post again.

That's what I meant by b word. I got banned once but by accident I needed a new IP to get on and request to be un-banned then they did it.

Go to your local office and trade in your modem for a new one.

in the router, clone the ip of any of the pc's attached to the router and then reboot the modem, router and pc.

That will give you a new ip

Re: [TWC] Been trying to get a new ip , anyway ?

About a week ago around 1am we had a city wide power outage. Didn't want to hear the UPS beep so I turned them off. Never bothered to turn them back on next morning. Think I had them off about 18 hours. Figured since this was a wide power outage and I was down for 18 hours figured I would get new ip. Nope same one came back up. Go figure.

Re: [TWC] Been trying to get a new ip , anyway ?

simple really,
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type in cmd and hit ok
4. Type ipconfig /release and hit enter
5. Click Start, Control Panel, and open Network Connections
6. Find and Right click on the active Local Area Connection and choose Properties
7. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
8. Click on Use the following IP address
9. Enter a false IP like 123.123.123.123
10. Press Tab and the Subnet Mask section will populate with default numbers
11. Hit OK twice
12. Right click the active Local Area Connection again and choose Properties
13. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
14. Choose Obtain an IP address automatically
15. Hit OK twice
16. Go to What Is My IP to see if you have a new IP address

Re: [TWC] Been trying to get a new ip , anyway ?

You won't.

The DHCP server remembers what address it issued to your MAC address, and it doesn't normally forget the association until the modem has been off for several days.

As stated earlier, to get a new IP, get a new MAC.

I don't understand because I got a new one in a few hours overnight. No Mac changes. Just unplugged and plugged back in next morning.

That is extremely unusual, based upon a lot of posts on this forum.

Hm. I'm gonna try again tonight I guess. Hate to have to memorize it again but whatever. Actually, I'll ask my neighbor if they can try their's tonight. (They don't use it late and they usually don't mind stuff like that.

Hm, I give up. You could call and ask them to release the lease but not sure if they'll do it. Some providers do.

I've done this on a Charter connection, and also on a Comcast connection. For Charter, I just unplugged the Motorola SB5100 from power, disconnected the computer, and connected a router. In powering down the modem, it forgets any device MAC address; its table is reset.

Power up the modem, wait for it to complete the boot process. Power up the router, wait for it to complete the boot process. When I finally powered up the computer I checked the IP address assigned to the router: It was not the same as the computer had had.

For Comcast, the subscriber had an Arris EMTA. I disconnected the cable between the router and modem and reset the modem (back panel reset button) with nothing connected. I used the router GUI to change the MAC address on the router WAN port, then powered down the router. Reconnected the router to the modem, powered up the router, and checked the IP address on the router: It had been changed.

Generically, you must clear the DHCP table in the modem, and change the MAC address on the WAN port of the connected device (the port which will connect to the modem). Clearing the modem DHCP table requires either a reset (if there is a reset button), or a power cycle. And there should not be a device connected to the modem during this process; whether by removing power to the connected device, or disconnecting it completely.

Re: [TWC] Been trying to get a new ip , anyway ?

NormanS is dead on as usual. It's also worth mentioning that if the modem is also an EMTA it may have battery inside. Resetting those modems require locating the reset button or pulling the power and the battery.

Re: [TWC] Been trying to get a new ip , anyway ?

after leaving the router off for a day, running cmd crap (which if you want a diff lan ip just make a static one it'll hold forwarding better) and talking to TW's wonderfully ignorant staff the moral is they refuse to change ip's b/c of the dhcp server they have being too much to train employees with and refusal to shorten the lease times combined with MAC clones obsolete on gateway routers (they don't offer it).... TWC will say
"so your job accidentally ip banned you and they want you to change your ip b/c they can't seem to get you off the blacklist hmmm you should unplug your modem for a week b/c we don't know how to individually release an ip lease unless we take down the entire city where you're at kkthxbye"
hope this post saves someone time >_

What you want to do is outside of the normal scope of tech support. What you want to do is easy to accomplish, if you think about "how things work". Assumes you have a router, or NIC, which allows user configuration of the MAC address on the Ethernet port connecting to the modem.
