Server not found

Getting quite a few of these recently using Vista HP, Firefox 3.5.2, and a new 2701 to replace an original Speedstream (which interestingly still works fine EXCEPT on hot and humid days!!).

Second try almost always works, suggesting a possible ATT DNS problem. Comments/setting suggestions?

Re: Server not found

I suggest copying the server name and then doing an nslookup to that server in a command window.

When I do that, I often get a timeout. I re-do until no timeout, then I can get the server. I will be interested in your experience.

I have 3 DNS servers in my fall-back list including OpenDNS, ATT, and a local college.

Re: Server not found

2701 is set to determine DNS automatically, and shows the proper ones: Primary DNS Server 68.94.156.1, Secondary DNS Server 68.94.157.1.

Any of my bookmarks/favorites can get the server not found reply, then immediately work properly on retry, so I'm not sure what nslookup would prove.

BTW, 2701 setup program and (lack of) documentation is the worst I've seen for any product in YEARS!!

Re: Server not found

OK. In my case, a second try will often still fail. So many times the situation stays long enough for me to do nslookup. I almost always have a command window open already. I have wondered if somebody doesn't put out possibly bogus DNS updates, or maybe the targets actually changed servers and the correct addresses have not yet propagated. I am not sure it isn't my router somehow, tho i don't see how that could be when I am not using the router or modem DNS.

If you don't like the DNS you are getting, you can tell your router or even each computer what DNS servers to use.

You can change it for one computer, and leave another doing what is happening now.

I have a feeling that what you find out could help others, such as me.

Edit update: I swapped routers, and my problem seems to have gone away.

Re: Server not found

Here's a Mozilla specific link including server not found errors, but I imagine it's more or less applicable to other browsers too. I may try a few of the DNS related things from it - will let you know of any significant results.

Re: Server not found

Tried hardcoding the DNS settings for the 2701, instead of using automatic, since the symptoms resemble possible DNS problems. Thought that might be it after half a day, but then the problem reappeared on two different machines and operating systems (although perhaps a bit less frequently).

Have to believe it's an ATT and/or 2701 problem, since it never happened on an old Speedstream modem hooked to a reasonably new Netgear Rangemax N router.

It's not a huge problem, since one retry click almost always works - just annoying I can't find a solution!

Re: Server not found

So far, so good with the config change (prefetching URLs sounds like a silly waste of bandwidth to me anyway):

Found this:

after finding this:

EDIT: Also found this confirming post in the Firefox newsgroup - note it's a similar, but different, preference:
