[Windsor] Cogeco super slow at night.

It's fine in the day, I'll get like 10 mbps during the day time but when it's peak times (7:00pm ish) this is what happens. It gets worst as the night goes on as well. Downloading stuff becomes absurdly slow. It's very annoying.

I dunno man. Don't rely on speedtests. I get pretty solid DLs at all times. Other than that look at the FAQs and post the answers so the tech here can help you out.

Well the speed test seem right. I'll try downloading patches for my games and I'll be downloading at 100 kbps during peak times. The earlier in the day it is the better the connection.
Im paying for 14 mbps, why do I only get 2 mbps?? Honestly an answer like "we know and were working on it" would be cool. There are other ISPs out there but I've been with cogeco for awhile...

1.)What, specifically, is your issue?
Super slow internet.
2.)How long has this issue been going on?
At least a week.
3.)Is there a specific time of day that this issue is most prevalent? It's seems all day now. My speed right now is apparently at 0.80 mb.
4.)If this is related to internet connectivity (ie: NOT mail, usenet, etc) -do you have more than one computer? Yes
If so, is the problem prevalent on both? Yes
-do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation..what channels? Nope.
5.)Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say? Reset my modem.
6.)What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? Reset my modem..
Is the the required information? It seems my speed is even slow now. Time to switch ISPs?

Called Cogeco and at first, they were going to send in a guy at like 1:00 pm. I told them I want the guy to be here when the internet is slow so he can see the problem. He'll be coming on the 25th, from 5-7pm. Hopefully he just doesn't replace the modem to make it look like he is doing something. This problem is still persisting and it's getting annoying.

Re: [Windsor] Cogeco super slow at night.
I'm finding the same issue over the last while (e.g. last night download speed dropped to 2000 kbps; this morning its 15,000).
I've been with Cogeco a long time, and been through this particular mill before. When download speeds drop only during peak use periods (upload speeds remain steady at all times), you know the cause is congestion.
No, I'm not going to call tech support -- who will, by script, not because they see a particular problem -- say a tech has to come out and check my modem/line. I'm not going to waste my time, nor their's, only to be told "Your equipment is fine, it must be a problem downstream". Unless they're going to try and tell me my modem or hardline knows what time of day it is...
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt... many, many times.
I'm posting this simply to let people know that they're not crazy when they see this result in the Windsor region. It's happening, obviously, to multiple people. So long as I'm able to work (I have a business account) I give Cogeco time to implement whatever fixes -- add lines, split nodes, etc. -- they need to make. It's part of the ups and downs of using a growing/developing service.

I'm just disappointed how Customer Support has to lie to me on the phone and BS with me. "Oh noo the area isn't congested! What are you talking about?" If it was my modem why would it be amazing at 3:00 am but slow at 3:45? It's getting RIDICULOUS now. Today at 3:45 the speed is at 3 mb/s. It's already becoming slow. I'm supposed to be paying for 14 mb/s. I should get refunded some money. I think I'm willing to stick out for maybe another month tops. Then I'm done with Cogeco.
I should switch to the Lite version. I'm getting 3 mb/s right now. Save some money.

Guys when your testing your speed, you should try different test site one right after the other. Don't rely on just one as that site maybe "congested".
As for UL and DL speeds. If you read the "fine print" it says a max of 14mbs.
Trust me I am not defending cogeco, but I have tried most other ISP in our area and at this point there the best option.
Bells phone lines and switching stations are old and crap in this area, so it worse on that front.
For those that say "There are other DSL providers here!", on who's actual lines does the data travel through? Bells, so other DSL providers are going to be just as crapy but they can blame bells lines to there customers.

Teksavvy has a lot of supporters because of the level of customer service. They're are more consistent (from what I'm told) than is Cogeco (from my own experience). Last winter I was getting awful download speeds, and the best Cogeco could offer was "will fix it in three months". No discount, no refund for paying premium prices for lite service download speeds.

Although I'm in Sarnia I get the exact same issues. At time during peak hours download rate can be as low as 500KBps.
Even though they list 14MBps as a possible MAX, the real problem is there is no minimum guaranteed rate. I'm sure a lot of people are like me and don't really care if we get 14MBps but would be satisfied with a consistent 4MBps so we can at least use some of the common media services on the Net these days.
I don't know how things are these days but when I had DSL from Bell over 10 years ago I got a consistent 3Mbps and never noticed any dramatic slowdowns this crippling. (Switch to Cogeco when moving and was happy until the last 2 months when the DL rates dramatically starting dropping in peak hours.)

I feel your pain guys. I moved from Windsor to Chatham 2 years ago and almost immediately started experiencing slow internet. It started out with what you guys are experiencing and got progressively worse to the point where i recorded videos of it taking 11 minutes for a web page to fully load. Cogeco denied, denied, denied there was any issue. They always sent the same technician and finally he spilled the beans to me that they had been experiencing node congestion on my node for almost 2 years.
I know people say it doesn't work but I filed a complaint with the CCTS noting my complete experience and my problem was fixed within 3 weeks of the time Cogeco had to respond to the complaint along with a full 6 month credit. My service has been unreal since then save for the caps.
This is my speed now at 9 PM. I can get d/l speeds of 1.7 mb/s on utorrent in the evenings.

HOLY CRAP.
(Downtown Windsor here)
I was here ~ 8 months ago, and we had their introductory business package at the time (Business Starter -> 7MBps). Was getting around 1000 kb/s download rate, including torrents.
NOW: We upgraded to the HIGHEST package cogeco has - the Business Enterprise Package - with 15 IP's, supposed to be at 16MB/s @ 200$ per MONTH! I barely ever get anything even close to 1MB/s. Right now, it's about 9:00PM, and we're getting around 200KB/S. I WANT 90% of my money back!!! We're running DD-WRT, with a professionally-configured maximum efficiency-setup (i.e. disabled stateful firewalls, dropped unneeded services like webadmin, etc) - and I'm one of the best network-educated guys that I know of.
 FAIL cogeco. It is now October. You have thrown away ONE MONTH of all of windsor's internet income towards your company since I have returned to this city to find this problem, and the internet is STILL not fixed.
:o (Actually, there was a brief 10-minute all-internet-services downtime today - and their Business VoIP is still down, so perhaps they're fixing something?)
I should ask actually. We're one of their top customers, so they almost always give it to me straight :)
Good luck all!

Very unhappy at the moment :(
Edit: Just checked my testing history. This is the lowest still on record for the previous six months. Next-lowest speed was 8200 (experienced twice within the past six months).

Re: [Windsor] Cogeco super slow at night.
I've been reading this thread with interest since it started. I also am in Sarnia (like Headrush69) and not Windsor but have been experiencing the same slowdowns daily during prime time, getting as low as 1-3 Mbps instead of the usual 13-16 Mbps I get during the daytime. I figure I may as well just add in a complaint here, for the record.
I realize we are paying for "up to" a certain speed but IMHO when a customer is receiving under 20% of advertised service capability for weeks on end it's entered the realm of unacceptable. Continued "congestion" should result in reduced billing: a company unable to produce at least, say, 40% of advertised quality for a whole month shouldn't expect to be paid 100% of a bill. Simple.
Of course I don't expect THAT to happen... I'd simply settle for the company acknowledging the problem actually exists.
Still waiting for channel 755 Newsworld HD to be activated in our area too...

I have been dealing with this for over 3 months now and called numerous times, at first the tech said they were working on it and it would be fixed within a month.. a month later I called and the tech said the other tech was misinformed about the date when it should be done and they sent out a guy who tested my modem for all of 2 minutes and left saying the whole area is slowed down. I called back a month later and now the tech is saying they have something planned for november to fix the net in the Sarnia area.
I am getting the feeling I am being jerked around big time and starting to get really really upset about it because during prime time I usually get under 1mb download and if I play any game I am getting ping like im from over seas and its laggy as anything. I am calling in november and if I get the same jerking around I am canceling on the spot and will deal with bell.. Yes you appear to be having alot of problems but I need to clarify some information.
1.6mb download and 0.68 upload when it should be 14mb down and 1 upload
Just to clarify if you are on the Cogeco Std you should see 14/1 which would be 1400kb/sec and 1000k/up or 1.4 megabytes down and 1 megabyte up which is what most people get.......now these are just a range and they will tell you that you can get up to those speeds and that they make no guarantees..
Have you tried contacting the office of the president @ cogeco.. If technical support and manager are unwilling or just feeding you crap... take it to the office office of the president and I am sure you will get something done....

Yeah I am on standard which should be 14000kb down and 1000kb up not 1400kb down and 1000kb up. I just did a speed test as of 7:05pm here and I got 1550 download and 1000 upload, was testing last night and it wasn't until 3:30am here that I could get at least 8000kb download. Funny thing is my friend who has the exact same service (standard) was getting 8000kb download at 10pm last night while I could only get then 1600kb download and he lives about 6 city blocks from me which really makes me angry about this.
I have only contacted through phone support so far and I really feel they don't care about my problem and are only jerking me around as I stated. How would I go about contacting the office of the president because I feel they are not gonna do anything to help me no matter how many times I call which has been about 4 or 5 now and soon to be one more.

Re: [Windsor] Cogeco super slow at night.
Remember that even if you are getting normal speed tests you could still have packet loss issues due to node congestion. If websites you normally visit are taking a long time to load this is likely the issue. I went through all this crap for over a year before i finally got mine fixed. I had the technician at my house i bet somewhere between 5 and 10 times. Don't back down from these clowns.

Painful, If cogeco dose not throttle the who is throttling my usenet downloads? 5pm on th nose my downloads drop to 252 kbps (ish), during the day I get a full 3 meg.
(I know I'm not in Windsor, should I have started a new topic?)
