[Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

I have recently change my ISP to BELL. They told me that service is pretty fast. I have done some speedtest from this site and apparently i can download up to 4874 Kb/sec WOW !

unfortunatly, i never download over 200KB/sec and u torrent never went up to 30Kb/sec.

I have called bell, they said it's fast and it's down reach a higher speed its due to the web sites server

i had videotron, the average download was about 500Kb/sec and i had to restrain uTorrent to 60Kb/sec !

I have a PC Intel Core 2 Quad with Realtek Network adapter RTL8168. OS : Windows Vista Home Premium 64bits .

Can any one help me ! They lend me 2701HG-G Gateway modem from 2wire.com

Can any body help me !

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

If you tell us which modem you have (example 2wire, 6520 etc) we may be able to tell you how to find the speed profile Bell set you at and if Bell can give you faster speeds.

Chances are (since I see you are in montreal north), you should have stayed with videotron. Might not be to late to cancel Bell for non-delivery of service.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

The "line stats" are what you want. These "line stats" obtained by the modem shows the over-all condition and quality of your line and will show if you can get more speed.

To get the 2wire line stats

copy/paste the link below into your web browser:
"http://192.168.2.1/xslt?PAGE=J45"

This will bring you to the 2wire stats page.

The stats of interest to you are:

twld.ds_capped_rate XXX; %
twdsm.attenuation_ds = XXX; %
twdsm.attenuation_us = XXX; %
twdsm.margin_ds = XXX; %
twdsm.margin_us = XXX; %
twdsm.rate_net_us = ;
% Max Rate with Impulse Noise Compensation (5min intervals)

Note: There may be many values for "% Max Rate with Impulse Noise". Paste them all.

find all the above stats (only the ones mentioned above) then copy and paste those specific values here and we can take a look at your line quality and see if there is anything Bell can action on.

If there is or isn't, we can maybe help you out on what to say or do based on these stats (be it direct forum help, or an Email to the prez of residential service, or a call to cancel).

You can't just copy and paste the values asked for here?

I'm old and lazy and don't want to install some sort of proprietary Micro$haft XPS viewer for their proprietary XPF file format. PDF's took 5 years for me to even bother to look at.

I'll check back later...

twld.ds_capped_rate = 8512

twdsm.attenuation_ds = 12.17; % Only calculated during training
twdsm.attenuation_us = 2.00; % Only calculated during training
twdsm.margin_ds = 28.45;
twdsm.margin_us = 6.50; % Only calculated during training

twdsm.rate_net_us = 253

Max Rate with Impulse Noise Compensation
[removed values since there was a lot]
======================================

Seems the stats are good. Very good. Seems Bell has done upgrades in area's of Montreal North.

Occupancy:
%occupancy = profile speed divided by Max attainable speed (ie. Max Rate). (hat tip wayjac)

So 8512/21000 (about) = ~41% (more than good) seems to be jumping from 40 to 41% but its negligible.

So you are set at an 8.5-meg speed profile. Actual speed you will see on your end is about 15% less due to loss, so you should see about 7.2-Meg in real life (~900kB/s).

It does not "appear" that you are on one of the defective remotes or defective cards Bell has installed ("appears" is the key word). If this is true, then the noise margin on your upstream can be taken at face value (the defective equipment doesn't show the real value). Since this value is very low (it's at a value that can/will cause errors) It's worth jumping into the direct forum an asking about this. If there are many errors it could affect what you are seeing on your end, but not to the extent you mentioned above.

You should be seeing full speed, About 900kB/s (or 7.2-meg) If you don't see this, then you have to look at your windows setup, nic drivers and so forth. this doesn't appear to be a Bell problem.

As for torrents. Bell throttles the hell out of it in order to monetize. They throttle to about 30kB/s If you use search in this forum, you should find a way to by pass the throttle to get full speed (but it's not fool proof).

So questions to ask in the direct forum found here:
»/forum/sympatdirect

1) Tell them the modem is reporting an upstream noise margin of 6.5 Ask them to confirm if this is the real value being reported by the modem (they will check the stats on their side)

2) If it is, Say your upstream noise margin is very low. Ask if it is causing major errors. If it is you may want to consider dropping the upstream speed by one notch. Sacrifice a bit of speed for stability.

3) Ask if there are many errors on the downstream. If there is, then they should not lower the downstream speed, but rather find and fix the problem since your stats are very good.

4) Ask if they can reset the port you are on

Things to check on your end over the next 24-hrs

If there is a problem that Bell can action on, the stats will show this (right now they don't show any problem aside from the low upstream noise margin).

Power cycle the modem (turn it off and on) to clear it's current values. Then over the course of today and tomorrow keep an eye on the following stats:
twdsm.margin_ds
twdsm.margin_us
Max Rate with Impulse Noise

If these values change by alot (more than 2 points in either direction) versus what you reported here today, then post back with those specific values (no need to upload a 25-page proprietary file format). If they are stable, then chances are there is no problem with Bell's side of things and the slow speed is all to do with your computer/set-up.

Sorry for the XPS documents but it open well with explorer ! :D

Thanks for the info, I'll keep an eye on the string you've posted. :)

There some more info : this is what i have notice lately, when i usually download is after 9pm and that's the time the problem occurs. in the morning I've realised the uTorrents go up to 330kb/sec and if i download from a web site such as HP, i could reach sometimes 600kb/sec. Like now uTorrent reach the speed of 313 but now down to 280 ! and if i download from this site »h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft···=3887826
i could reach 390 if uTorrents is stop.

I'll post at 3, 6, 9 the information you asked.

thanks ! :hmm:

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Yes, post the value (copy/paste them)

These two values:
twdsm.margin_ds
twdsm.margin_us
will show us if there is a noise problem on the line you have. It could be intermittent, so it best to look at them many time though out the day and note the values.

This value:
Max Rate with Impulse Noise
can be used to calculate your occupancy. But I don't notice much of a change on this one. This would also show if a line problem is occurring (it stores the values at 5-minute intervals so no need to keep an eye on them like the other two above).

Unless things change a lot (and yeah many problem only do show in the evening), then I would have to say the problem, at first glance, is your system/application setup.

Also make sure its not someone using your wireless that you don't know about. Go into the routers settings and turn off wireless.

You should be seeing 7.2-meg as a minimum. The only other thing I can think of is that you are getting thousands of CRC errors and the like, which these stats don't show (and I forget the 2wire link to the errors page). So this is what you will ask in the direct forum (as detailed in the previous post).

Also you should be aware of this (if you aren't already):
a) The throttle is from 4-pm to 2-am

b) if you are running a torrent during that time it can and will affect your speed as a whole (ie if you run something that causes the throttle to kick in your entire DSL line will suffer since the throttle will not only affect torrents).

If by monday the stats and the direct forum show all is good, then you will need to look at your system and application setup.

You should be seeing more than 600kB/s (I hope you meant 600kB/s and not 600kb/s as you wrote. Big difference between kB and kb).

Small "b" in kb = kilobit
Big "B" in kB = kiloByte

There is a difference. Big difference.

1 kilobit = 0.125 kiloBytes.

600kb/s (as you wrote it) = 75kB/s

Bells throttle is about 240kb/s = 30kB/s

Small b and big B is very significant when you ask questions and think you have problems with DSL.

In either case, you should see lots more than 600kb/s (as what you stated).

Google, "convert bits to bytes".

Also. Some websites use a kilo as meaning 1024 to convert bits to bytes, and some use the kilo as being 1000 to convert bits to bytes.

Storage "kilo" has historically been 1024 (ie hard disk capacity)

You want to you 1000.

Even some ISP's confuse the two and count B/W usage with 1024 when it should be 1000... anyhow.

sbrook @ 13th Sep 05:58PM:
Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

small b = bits
big B = bytes

if you're counting in bytes ... kilo = 1024, mega = 1024 * 1024

if you're counting bits per second kilo = 1000, mega = 1000 * 1000

This wonderful discrepancy that confuses the hell out of so many people is due to the fact that bits per second (bps) is a measure that comes from the communications industry where kilo & mega are the standard mathematical 10^3 and 10^6 values whereas bytes comes from the computer industry where kilo and mega are the values of 2^10 and 2^20 presumably chosen because they are the nearest powers of 2 to the mathematical Kilo and Mega!

so to convert say 8 Mbps (8 megabits per second) to KBps (Kilobytes/second)

8 Mbps = 1 Million Bytes per second (8 bits/byte)

1 Million Bytes /sec = 976.5625 KBps (0.95347 MBps)

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

The only thing I can see worth asking in the direct forum is what was mentioned further up.

It is pooooooooossssssible that there is a modem issue preventing you from seeing the full 7.2-meg. A modem swap is an easy thing they can do for you.

The rest being system, application and throttle related.

System wise, I don't know. I don't do torrents. But some people here are good at tweaking this stuff. Maybe one such night in shining armour will give you a hand.

I think he's aware of that already (or should be).

But he isn't seeing the full speed with non-torrents and he isn't getting full speed off peak hours w/ torrents I do believe (from what I understood).

His stats are good (aside from his upstream SNR).

So what I think he is saying is that he would like someone who is knowledgeable w/ torrents to help him with the proper setup (maybe that half open stuff I read about).

And also if there are any system tweaks he should be aware of. Since he's coming from cable to DSL normally the MTU is 1500 for cable. Bell is 1492. But I don't think this is an issue since he has no router and is using a Bell supplied modem-router. So should be a non-issue. So he is also looking for a hand at tweaking stuff on his end for DSL, as applicable.

I think he's aware of the 30kB/s throttle on whatever Bell feels like throttling. If he isn't, then Bell should have informed him when he signed up for their service.

Not like Bell has a big page warning telling consumers they don't actually give what they sell now do they? Where do they say: WARNING we sell 7-meg or 12-meg and give you 240kb/s (30kB/s). Customer beware. Not like they tell people when people call them either.

If he's not happy with it he should cancel and go back to videotron and endure no further hassles from Bell's crippled service.

Easy as that.

So if he hasn't awaken to this yet, he should be now ;)

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Again here's the stats from 2wire modem.

twdsm.attenuation_ds = 12.18; % Only calculated during training
twdsm.attenuation_us = 2.00; % Only calculated during training
twdsm.margin_ds = 26.63;
twdsm.margin_us = 7.00; % Only calculated during training
.

Yes i kind of realised now between 4pm and 2am, they kind of throttle down the speed to 25 kB/sec (yes kB) with uTorrent.

and i think it's bell policy not to mention that you speed does reduce between 4pm and 2am. Every body from bell seems to stay it's fast !!! :uhh: I guess they don't know what is speed !

But still don't see why I cant get any faster download in the other time zone !

Going back to videotron, is not in my plans yet. After many years of being a customer, they have on many occasion **** me off. I have paid them to install extra outlets in my house, they are saying that I'm not allowed more then one outlet and that i was stealing ! :mad: i paid to install outlets and I'm stealing ! they come to my house like real farmers no class and with no professionalism and tell you off and charge you 70 $ for absolutely nothing just to tell me off because I was supposedly yelling in my router !

So i moved everything away from videotron. Especially, they don't have many english channels and i find they are more expensive then the competition. Every time there's a new channel, videotron is the last one to add it on to his grid just because it's not a TVA or Quebecor channel.

I'm pretty mad at bell but frustrated from the service of videotron. I wish we had Rogers or other competitors!!! well we will see what i will do with this ISP in the next couple days.

Like i said if anyone as a clue how to tweak a computer to boost the performance or has a link, let me know ! For uTorrent or internet explorer.

thanks for everything @videotron !

(too bad that the original owners of videotron sold the company to Quebecor ! they had the service and the vision)

Everyone has multi-outlets for their cable tv. They don't charge more that I know of and allow this. From my understanding they just don't allow it between different dwellings.

Pretty sure they allow this.

But I know many who have it and run it to 3 apartments. This they don't want though.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

You already have a post going here »Bell Max 12...more like max 4mbps...why? which was replied to, so ideally it should stay there, but anyhow, no. You don't have what you are paying for.

They have you on a 7-meg profile it seems and not 12.
(twld.ds_capped_rate = 7616; = 7-meg profile)

Since this is a new install (I think) tell them you don't want your billing to start till you actually have what you are paying for (in other words a credit till you have what you bought).

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

"twdsm.rate_net_us = 200;"

That shows us the upload sync rate is 800 Kbps (mutiply the above value by 4 as instructed to so by a 2wire modem html page that I have seen before). However, we are missing the "twdsm.rate_net_ds" value which will tell us the actual downstream sync rate.

"twld.ds_capped_rate = 7616"
This number is suppose to represent the maximum download sync speed allowed by your profile in Kbps. However, I have documented that the 2wire modem can report this number in error when you are really on a 6016Kbps profile.

In my picture, notice how it reports a profile speed of 7616Kbps but an actual sync rate of 6016Kbps? There is plenty of buffer to connect higher (my line could actually do more than 10Mbps, according to one of the other 2wire html pages).

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

twdsm.rate_net_ds = 1264;

So this would represent my downstream sync rate.
Thanks for all of the helpful input guys. Paints a better picture to what Bell is doing, compared to what they supposedly offer.

Still sounding like a big bad phonecall is in order, once again...

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Good observation dslrocker3

Will make sure to add this in the future.

This does make more sense, and also makes sense in regards to some other posts.

oneightyone, according to this stat you are on a 5-meg profile (even worse), which makes more sense given your speed tests in the other topic, and in regards to this topic as well.

+1 dslrocker3

I've always noticed this difference as well, but just wrongly assumed the capped rate would be the correct one when there were differences. Excellent catch.

You are synced at 5056Kbps/800Kbps (by the way, you line is capable of about 10Mbps on the downstream in ADSL1 mode and even more in ADSL2 mode). the incorrect profile reporting of 7616Kbps appears to be a bug in the 2wire firmware (and I have a strong suspicion that it has something to do with IKNS because this number was always correct for me before beeing hooked up to an RDSLAM).

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

The Optimus, you are set to 8.5Mbps sync rate and I don't see that many errors on your line. It's probably not a line problem. It could be the modem or it could be your computer. Either that or there is just a general slowdown in the sties that you are going to.

Thanks a lot guys. Seems the conversation provided some key help.
Problem was addressed on the Direct Forum, and now we're running at more reasonable speeds (10mbps), which is much closer to what I am paying for.

Thanks again.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

If you get a chance (or feel like it) can you post the "cap" rate and the "net" rate again just to compare what they are set at now?

Has me curious...

twdsm.rate_net_ds =
twld.ds_capped_rate =

If they don't come out to the same value, can you tell us what you get on average with a speed test as well (downstream), in addition with the 2 values above.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

HI,
I have a similar problem with my Bell-Sympatico line. Here are my values as provided by the refered site:

twdsm.attenuation_ds = 49.36; % Only calculated during training
twdsm.attenuation_us = 31.00; % Only calculated during training
twdsm.margin_ds = 15.00;
twdsm.margin_us = 19.00; % Only calculated during training

twld.ds_capped_rate = 4032;

What do you think? Personnally, I think my line is quite bad!!!
Thanks for your help and comments. :uhh:

Stats show you should be able to handle more.

Jump in the direct forum and ask for a 5 or 6-meg profile.

Paste the stats again here when they bump up your speed.

(next time paste ALL the stats as detailed in the post).

I thought 8 mbps was the maximum sync on ADSL (G.DMT annex A) or is it the maximum sync Bell would push on ADSL ?

I believe Bell change that to the 7-meg profile. Deadpool stated this in the forum around 6-months ago (but who knows).

So if this is the actual case, this could explain the difference between the "cap" rate (7-meg) and the "net" rate (true rate) for those on ADSL (G.DMT annex A).

Best guess.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

8Mbps is the maximum on g.dmt but some modems estimate what the maximum would be if higher speeds did exist on g.dmt (which they don't). To my knowledge, the fastest Bell G.dmt profile is 7040/800 Kbps.

I've actually seen 8000/800 or something like that. I believe HiVolt was on it a while back.

Notice the Max1 Max2 Max3 values in dslrocker3's post. They all show 8128 kbps, which I believe, indicate G.DMT annex A's theoretical limit.

Perhaps that's why the modem also reports a capped rate at 7616 kbps at the top of the page; even though the user's profile is set at 6016 kbps.

8128kbps down is the maximum attainable sync rate for the ANSI T1.413 Issue 2 protocol
Any modem that shows a maximum attainable sync rate higher than 8128kbps also supports the adsl2 and adsl2+ protocols

Most dslams support the current protocols
ANSI T1.413 Issue 2 8 Mbit/s
G.DMT Annex A(992.1) 12 Mbit/s
ADSL2 (992.3) 12 Mbit/s
ADSL2+ (992.5) 24 Mbit/s
Plus some other protocols

It's 8500/800 or 8500/1000, Dslam don't have profile above 7000/800.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Upstream speed: You didn't post it. Should be 1-meg per their advertised speed rates (and what you are paying for).

Downstream: you have 7-meg and you don't appear to be on a defective IKNS remote.

SNR's are ok, lowish, but a safe level. Keep an eye on these to see how these values jump around.

Occupancy: ~62-64% stable enough. If the gap jumps more it's indicative of a problem, which tends to also show in the SNR normally as well (but not 100% always, depending on cause).

So it's ok. Nothing stellar.

Check the upstream value, see if there is room to increase the speed since the upstream SNR seems to indicate you have a bit of room should you not have the full advertised upstream speed.

Is it possible to tell what my line can support with these stats I have posted above?

Where do you see that value in the information he/she provided ? Or is it a rough estimate ?

That last 11 lines of figures are the maximum attainable sync rate for the downstream
The highest max rate is 11408kbps and the lowest is 10996kbps

You line can easily support a 8000kbps downstream sync rate, the sync rate should be lower than the max sync rate for stability

The modem has been running for 6 to 8 hours if you allow the modem to run without rebooting that table of figures can accumulate about 5 days of info

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

I take it since it would be a 8000kbps downstream sync rate, theres no plans that would support me. That's too bad.

Do you know about anything I can do on my part or just sit tight and wait for Bell to upgrade my area, or add a plan to support me in the future.

Thanks.

Calculated.

A search on DSLr (various FAQS throughout the site) will explain occupancy and how to calculate it.

Same method used by DMT and anything else that calculates occupancy.

(Actual/max attainable) x100% = Occupancy

Hmm. Makes sense. Thanks !

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Your current sync rate is 7040kbps
A speed test web site would show your throughput at about 6000kbps

If your sync rate was 8000kbps
A speed test web site would show your throughput at about 7000kbps

No upgrade is needed if bell has a offering faster than what you have now order it, if not no big deal you don't stand to gain much more throughput

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

I just figured out how Bell is throttling me. I did an IP lookup and found out my CO or ISP hub is in Mississauga. I live in Brampton, Brampton has two COs that I found. I rebooted my modem and checked again, this time it says I am in Oakville and then Milton. Go figure.
I have complained to Bell support when they had a support website, and they kept saying I was too far from the CO to get any more speed or bandwidth. I used to get 6mb download and they had me down to 2mb and recently I can't get over 1mb no matter what time of the day it is.
If they got me wired to Mississauga, no wonder they say I am too far away from the CO.
So anybody complaining about Bells speed, this how they do it. They got you wired the longest route possible. but as a customer I don't see how to fix this. Even changing ISP could get me the same results.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Nomojo, the ISP lookup information doesn't tell you which central office you are hooked up to/has nothing to do with that. You will need to troubleshoot further because the information you just provided doesn't help to find the problem.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

crazyguy1588, your profile is only set to 2496 Kbps on the downstream and 800Kbps on the upstream. The rate-cap only actually gives us the profile speed. What people need to be really be reporting is the twdsm.rate_net_ds value which provides the true sync rate in Kbps when you multiply that value by 4. Based on the fact that you have a signal to noise ratio of 31dB, this also means that you are synced at the full profile speed of 2496Kbps. Your line is capable of much more on the downstream side and there is absolutely no reason that you shouldn't be set to 6016/800 Kbps. You would even be fine at 7040/800 Kbps.

Your sync rate [capped rate] is 2496kbps or 2.49Mbps
Have you tried rebooting the modem.... if the sync rate [capped rate] does not increase to at least 6016kbps you need to talk to your isp

Do you know the actual purchased sync rate [capped rate] or does your isp only market speed [im paying for a 6Mbps]

your saying i should contact Bell and yell at them until they give me the full 6mbps speed that im paying? one of my friend lives 5 minutes from where i am (next village) and they get higher speed then i do for the same package. im concerned that im not getting the full package, since i do online games, i need better...wish i was back to my 10mbps in town with rogers...happy times...lol

Hello, wayjac. With a Bell Canada's dslam, it is impossible to change the rate cap value unless Bell changes the profile setting. This rate cap value will always say 2496 Kbps on this line (unless the profile is changed) even if he connects at a lower speed because of bad line conditions. The value only represents a maximum sync rate that Bell Canada will allow your modem to connect .

And yes, crazyguy, your profile is set too low and you line is capable of better. You need to contact Bell to have a technician at the High Speed Centre change the profile setting.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Rebooting the modem is a simple thing for a user to do the line could have been noisy enough in the last 8 hours too cause the modem and dslam to reduce the sync speed

You're well aware that line conditions are in constant change

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Yes, of course wayjac. What I'm trying to say is that the downstream rate cap value in the 2wire logs does not always equal the current sync rate; it usually does but not in all caes. We both agree that crazyguy is currently synced at 2496/800. What I'm trying to say is that the 2wire's log is set up so that it will say the capped_rate is 2496Kbps even if his line got worse and connected at something like 1856/800. twdsm.rate_net_ds would be a truer reprsentation of the current sync rate when this happens.

2496/800 Kbps happens to be the exact rates allowed by the Bell Canada 2496/800 profile. It's not like he's connecting at 2496 because the higher speeds aren't acheivable. Bell Canada is liimiting it.

What I'm trying to say is that the 2wire's log is set up so that it will say the capped_rate is 2496Kbps even if his line got worse and connected at something like 1856/800. twdsm.rate_net_ds would be a truer reprsentation of the current sync rate when this happens.
We just don't agree on that
The capped_rate [sync rate] always shows the current sync rate
I've never seen the capped_rate differ from the current sync rate as shown in the rest of the gui

of course, considering that it reports 7616 Kbps on the IKNS when there's not such speed offered by Bell. lol. There was at least one other person in the Bell forum a few weeks who was wondering about that too and he was actually at 5056/800 Kbps. We were speculating that the 2wire modems will report 7616Kbps as the rate cap no matter what when connected to IKNS and that the number was fictional.

Yup I remember that one.

Cap rate = false rate
Net rate x4 = True rate.

I'd like to see just one more IKNS like this before saying it's for sure, but so far I have spotted two like this. So yeah, I believe it to be another defect in the IKNS reporting.

From now one I wil be asking people to post both. This may actually be a way to now confirm an IKNS remote.

epspecially all of the upload nonsense... permanent 6dB signal to noise, interleave reporting when really on fast path, 2wires only specifically acting like they are interleave when they are set to fast path, sync rates of 608,736,768, or 800 Kbps on the upload on the same line from 4 different modems, etc.. Why Bell Canada chose Ikanos is beyond me. at the same time, I'm glad that I am connected to one, espcially when considering that last screenshot that I showed to you :)

Be glad that you have a short loop
There's a good chance that if the ikns dslam needs to be replaced bell may replace it with a dslam from another vendor

yeah but then I'll have to re-evaluate the best-match modem for my line. oh crap, I forgot something... With attenuation as low as mine and assuming that the IKNS upstream strangeness is elminated, it won't matter which modem I use! :)

Let's not pretend that they sat here with a list of known deficiencies like those you mentioned and said "We'll take it!". By the time all these bubble to the surface it's too late and you have to try and solve the problems as they exist today with the hardware you've selected.

Not just directed at you, there seem to be a few others who are very familiar with the 2wire/modem stats.

On your output it said

"twdsm.margin_us = 15.00; % Only calculated during training"

"margin_us" I have to assume is upstream signal-to-noise margin. I'm curious why the modem would say it's only calculated during training. That seems incorrect.

Given your attenuation, a 4-meg profile (~3.4 real life) is "about right". Some people get 5, some don't depending how the SNR is. Your SNR is at 9, and it appears you are on regular DSL.

If they bump you to 5-meg (fast) that SNR will drop around 6 and you will have problems.

What you can do is keep an eye on the SNR value (twdsm.margin_ds) over the course of the week and see how it changes. If you find it jumping from 9 to 6 then to 12, then yeah you have an issue that needs to be addressed and this would potentially give you 5-meg (if it actually jumps, if Bell gives you the time of day, if bells cares enough to address it and fix it, if its not an inside problem).

Want faster? Then you would have to go cable.

You could always ask in the direct forum if there is a remote in your area that you can be switched to w/o affecting cost, contract(s), etc etc.

But 4-meg (what you have) is "about right".

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Forgot to add, the upstream SNR is at 15 and you have a 512K upstream speed profile.

You have room for faster speed on the upstream.

So jump in the direct forum »/forum/sympatdirect and tell them to give you what you are paying for and increase the upstream speed (unless of course if this SNR value of the upstream is jumping all over, which you can check yourself as said in the other post).

Yup, thats right for a 4-meg profile (4032 is what you have). To get real life speed you need to take that 4032 and multiply it by ~85%.

so 4032x85%= 3.4 (which is what you have). So this is correct.

What you buy and sign up for is rarely what you get with Bell. If you look through this forum you will see this. With Bell (or any DSL provider) it's buyer beware.

2.
3km, 2.7km. 4km 1km.. all gravy. It does depend on distance, but also on the quality of the Bell land-line feeding you. Some people get even less than you at less distance.

For your attenuation (given there is no short affecting this value), what you have is "about right", though many have 5-meg.

If you want to see if it's your inside wiring that is maybe giving you a lower SNR (if its not due to the outside line itself), then search this forum for "testing at the demarc".

What the rep says and what happens in real life are two different things. Reps care only about a sale. That's it. That's all. With Bell it's buyer beware when calling them. This is a known fact as can be found through-out this forum.

3. an SNR jumping 1, 2 or even 3 points is no biggy and should be ignored. If it's more than 3 then there could be an issue at hand.

If it jumps from 9 to 6 then up to 12 or something, then the "spread" over time would be 12-6 = 6. 6 points is a lot and indicative of a problem that is indeed robbing you of the next higher up speed.

if it's 9, jumps to 10 then to 8, don't worry, the "spread" is nothing to be concerned about.

Review this forum more.

Don't forget to jump in the direct forum to get the upstream fixed.

Also, ask them if there is a remote you can get on.

Do this first while reading up and doing forum searches.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

Bell clearly says "up to" 7 mbps. It all depends on your line conditions.

Your current 4mbps sync is the best your line can handle at the moment. Perhaps setting interleave (error correction) on your line could allow a higher sync speed at the expense of ping (response time).

As it has been said, post in the direct forum and ask for the upload to be increased to 800 kbps.

Keep in mind that you want a "stable" connection at all times. Increasing the download sync with an already low SNR is bound to be problematic.

Re: [Internet] Bell Internet Performance - Slow speed

You might be 2.7 km from the CO as the bird flies, but the phone line may actually go a LOT further than that. Phone lines snake all over the place. Most older lines went where it was convenient to run them, which is NOT necessarily the shortest path or even the shortest "along the roadways" paths. Often in city neighbourhoods they snake up one street and back down the next and up the next etc. In some crazy instances, you can live within metres of the CO, but you may be at the end of a kilometre of wire!

So, that must be taken into account ... and then it's the "electrical length" that really matters. Junctions, splices etc. all add to the electrical length of a wire.

Then there's the quality of the cables ... have squirrels eaten them, has a contractor injured the cable while installing a swimming pool, has a tree root grown into the cable. All these things tend to let water in that usually doesn't impact the voice qualities of the line, but can totally destroy it's use for DSL.

So, length is only the beginning and that's only an estimate!
