I think they're using SDV out East, which would certainly help with the bandwidth.

The Newtown, CT system has been using SDV for over 7 months now, although these are first HD additions since that rollout. They have not removed anything from analog recently.

How would you say that the SDV is working out?

Are the unpopular channels the ones that are switched to free up the bandwidth?

I don't have Charter in my town, but my family and friend's do in the surrounding towns, hence my interest. None of them have a cablecard or Tivo, but no one's said anything about being unable to tune to a given channel. So I would theorize that it's gone over well, although it's all about what channels are sdv and whether or not they're watching them.
I know when they rolled out SDV on my service, Cablevision, last year, it was on lesser viewed stations and lots of people had issues with 'channel not available' messages, however I never had a problem. Apparently if you don't have a decent signal to begin with, sdv will give you a headache, so you'd need to have that fixed. CV also had issues with not assigning enough 'slots' when they first rolled it out, so once the max # of people tuned into a sdv feed, no one else in the area could tune it. That has since been resolved.

SDV here in worcester (which is a similar setup to CT) is currently setup to move all the digital pay channels (low def movie chans, those extra sports and science channels). None of the HD chans are on SDV yet, but they have about 15+ chans on each SDV Qam. So you don't really notice an issue with quality or anything at this point cause it's just low def channels that most people don't have. Lets hope that we get some of those HD chans up here that you are getting in CT soon.

Is this just for the Newtown, CT areas. Or will other area in CT be getting some or all of this, such as northeast CT, Willimantic/Ashford network?
I mean, all the other channels I want are in this packagem except maybe 1 or 2. If I was getting NHL Network in HD, that would make me SO happy!

Alright some solid additions there. USA and SyFy are especially big for me.
Only 3 channels left that I actually care about:
-MSGHD(I honestly don't know how they don't carry it when ever other RSN is carried, they and they carry a permanent overflow channelf rot he SD Version)
-CW HD(I also find it odd there missing an OTA network in HD)
-ABC Family: I don't care as much about this one, but I would like it. I'm surprised however there adding Disney without adding this.
Anyway, overall I am extremely happy with these adds and am looking forward to them

MSGHD and MSG+HD exclusions are particularly baffling when you consider they're about to add all of the other stations Cablevision owns (We, IFC, AMC, Fuse). I guess the issue is that Charter has a national deal to carry those four, but the local office doesn't have a deal for the sports channels. So still no local pro teams involving the Knicks, Rangers, Islanders and Devils or Fox Sports Net affiliate college games in HD. I know Cablevision won't sell MSGHD and MSG+HD to Fios or Uverse, but they have sold it to Comcast since they don't compete with them.
As for Disney and ABC FamilyHD, also missing from that pact are Disney XD-HD, ESPNU-HD, and ESPNewsHD
And then there's the addition of Turner owned Cartoon NetworkHD, but not Turner Classic MoviesHD, which Turner doesn't charge extra for if they have a deal for the sd channel. (TruTvHD missing as well)

Could you ask your headend contact for me what was the logic behind the recent move to put QVC smack-dab in the middle of the broadcast HD channel lineup in the 78x range on channel 784, forcing WBZ-DT to move down to 783? Made no sense at all, considering that all of the analog broadcast channels mostly had digital/HD equivalents with the "x" in the 78x matching their channel assignment in the analog part of the lineup (04 was 784, 05 is 785, 06 is 786, 07 is 787, etc.), and that was damn convenient to remember where to find them. And the irony is that the QVC channel they inserted up there isn't even broadcasting in HD. Don't get me started on whether the world even needs QVC in HD. Nothing Charter does makes any practical sense to me.

QVC pays cable operators to be carried. So it keeps Charter's costs down which in turn helps subsidize your bill.
Considering some companies have paid to have their stations placed low on the dial in the past, it appears QVC thinks they'll get more people surfing through the HD tier and stumble across their station than they would elsewhere.
So since it makes no logical sense otherwise, I wouldn't be shocked if QVC paid to be placed there. Why they wouldn't just pay to have their HD feed placed there is another matter.
The only other somewhat-logical reason is that Charter agreed to carry the HD feed there once they reclaim more bandwidth. Since their overall national HD count is so low, I'm sure there'd be alot of iritated people out there if one of the few HD channels they got was QVC.

UMatter2Charter -- I agree with the above referenced post...
In Charter NE CT, it should be Channel 3 is on 783, Channel 4 is on 784 (but really is on 785), Channel 6 should be on 786... Put QVC in slot 785 (empty) and move 785 to 784 (which would match the SD channel 4 location)!?>

I live in Spencer so I imagine I am on the same system as Worcester. I believe the only non-SDV channels are the 780-790 block. When I first got my tivo setup, those were the only digital channels that would work until I got the tuning adapter.

It could be cause those were the channels that weren't encrypted. The public channels that occupy that space are all clearQam.

I should have specified this before, but this was after I had gotten my cable card authorized and before the tuning adapter was installed. The morons forgot to bring the tuning adapter on the first visit so I had to wait a week with only the locals in HD and analog channels.
Before the cable card was installed I got nothing on the HD channel numbers.
