Re: Charter Latency Issues

There is a known issue on the Charter backbone network that is being investigated.

Re: Charter Latency Issues

Their backbone has some serious issues. I have a 20mbps package and the last few nights I'm lucky to get 7mbps. My pings look like th OP's.

Thier backbone has been extremely inconsistent(to be somewhat nice) over the last several months. I have never seen such consistent inconsistencies in my speeds before Charter decided to build their own backbone.

They need to get it straightened out or circumvent it until they do.

Your have latency to your 1st hop (CMTS). You have a modem or RF issue.

Yes he does.

I have had problems with inconsistent pings in the last week as well. My traceroutes are very similar.

Re: Charter Latency Issues

I have similar issues here too.

My 2nd hop info:

9:20PM 10.240.192.1 35-45ms
11:40PM 10.240.192.1 15-26ms
12:50AM 10.240.192.1 5-16ms

BOS->CHI PING AVG

9:20PM 61
11:40PM 47
12:50AM 31

I play online games and latency is killing me. I did a ping plotter and there are numerous ping spikes within Charter's network.

The direct support forum here told me is normal range.

I am in Boston area and playing in TX servers, my ping went from 50ms to 100ms in last month.

Looking into my options now.

Re: Charter Latency Issues

I have been having problems with high latency during evening hours for several months with Charter here in the Dallas area. I have started running Ping Plotter and can see that the connection to the UBR and the first static node inside Charter is fine, but the next hop runs between 500 to 1000 ms from about 6 pm to 8 pm and runs back up again about 9:30 pm to 11:30 or 12 pm.

When the latency is high, it does not really recover any of the latency along the route even if the route is asymmetric which indicates to me that it is mostly on the outbound leg.

What irks me is that whenever I call support their response is basically "it is your equipment", when i can see that it is clearly happening inside their network. I primarily have internet service so I can game. If there were another service available here I would likely drop them.

What can be done?

Take screenshots of pingplotter results. Post in Charter Direct forum.

And $10 says Rocky's problem is due to him saturating his upload and not realizing it. Im good for it you'll just have to collect *in person*

And for those in KY stating "its a backbone problem" for someone in MI... well you really need to look at the trace again!

Re: Charter Latency Issues

Thank you Jerm, I will probably do that, but I am going to wait until I have enought to show that it is not just a one time thing. :)

I agree with you, Rocky's trace shows he is not even connecting to the UBR without a huge latency. Could be saturating his upload, but also could be an overloaded UBR. That happened to me about two years ago. Our local segment was overloaded and needed to be split.
