How to make Roadrunner faster?

Hi I just moved houses in the last few weeks. I am on the standard 10/1 plan. At my old house my speed on Roadrunner was 22/1(with turbo) and downloading at 1.2mb per sec steady. How come here I can't even download past 700kb per sec and it jumps all over the place. And the speedtest says I'm getting 19/1(turbo). Do I have to call them up or what.

Could be the server your downloading the file from. Try downloading it at another time of day. Then see if it still happens or not.

That speed can be slowed by anything really. First thing's first, go to this site's tools section and run a tweak test. When it asks you for the speed, set it at 10000 and set it to "normal" since you use a cable modem. Post up the results of the tweak test for us.

Keep in mind that a lot of webmasters also cap the speed at which their servers will transfer data to you. Many of them seem to keep it at 500KB/s. Many of the sites I visit have that limit or even lower, but the gaming sites that have large downloads on there have uncapped servers where regardless of the connection I'm on, if the server and network is free I'll pull Megabytes a second from them.

*I just downloaded the program and tried tweaking my system. It doesn't improve the speed at all. Also I don't think the website I am downloading from limits the download speed(Rapidshare). I always had 1.25mb steady download speed at my old house.

Just for kicks, try downloading this test file. Once it gets 50% done just note your D/L speed.

It hit 3.3 MB for couple secs then 1.8-1.9 Turbo Steady

This is the problem with relying on IE to report download speeds.

Your TCP window is also the amount of data downloaded as soon as you click on a file.

Once you click save, it will begin downloading, but already counts the tcp window that was downloaded. This is why the download speed may appear to be faster then it should be at first, and then just keep going down during the first 5-20seconds.

You need to get yourself a program like netmeter. It will tell you the download and upload in updates of every second. And it does not exaggerate.

This way when you download a file, you will see exactly how power boost works, looking at it jumping up and down between 20-34Mbits/sec. Then dropping down after a few seconds to your normal bandwidth limit,of either 10000/512 or 20000/1000.

Try also doing ftp transfers:

open command prompt and type:

ftp ftp1.optonline.net

get test64

And wait for it to finish do not use your internet.

It is best to try this immediately after trying a speed test, this way power boost does not kick in and report false/higher readings during this new transfer.

This is why I hate 2-5seconds of power boost, because on a large file it really doesn't make a huge difference, and it will only make you think your downloading faster when your not!.

Please try what I said and report back.

I've just tried that and got 748.56KB/SEC. Is there any ways of helping my connection get at least 1MB/SEC? I don't think my connection is at it's full potential on a 10/1 connection.

Click save to each adapter, and leave everything else BLANK, don't touch anything else.

Restart and try this all again.

Don't really get a steady download stream. Jumps anywhere from 600 to 700.

Try calling tech support about the problem. Even if you do call them about your issue. I don't think they will be much help. Since your around 700 KB/sec they wont be much help.

I guess your only options would be. Call tech support and try to get help or live with the 700 KB/sec problem.

Okay I'll try that. Just wondering, what tier are you on? Also do you think I should be concern about this? I mean I'm on the 10/1 tier and can't download past 1mb/sec.

I'm no cable broadband expert by all means. But if you are having signal issues on your line. That just may effect your overall speed you will get. Tech support can check your signal and see if its within specs or not.

It could be simple as the node your on is over-sold. I live in Ohio and I'm on the Columbus division. Here the highest speed available is 15000/768. Which is the broadband speed I got.

When I try the 'Test512' using my RR. I get a stable 1.7 - 1.8 MB/sec.

Excellent speed man. You got what you paid for on that 15/768 connection line. Hope they can make mine like that also so i can get the full 10/1.

This is what the cable signal readout on »192.168.100.1/diagnostics_page.asp says:

Are you testing this directly connected to the cable modem or are you using a router - if a router is being used - are you wireless?

You said you just moved.
I would suspect one fo two things.
(1) if you moved and are on a different Node then you may be on a Node that has capacity issues (too many users).
(2) even thought your signal look good - there is one signal you can not see that can absolutely cause you problems and that's Upstream SNR being too low. That can only be seen from the Headend by your cable company or tools they have to check.
But a good indication of Upstream SNR probelms woujld be for you to ping the gateway about 50 to 100 pings and see there there are any timeouts - there should be none to the gateway or CMTS (1st hop past your PC or router is you have one). Also check your modem logs - frequent No Ranging Response T3 timeouts also indicate Cable Plant noise problems which maybe be just intermittant and cause you problems (again Upstream SNR).
Charter uses a program called eqa to check modem history but it can only be set to monitor at a minimum of 15 minute intervals - so if you have intermittant noise problems then the program might not even catch it and you might need someone at the headend to monitor your Node with a spectrum analyzer to cateht he problem and then send a line tech to track it down.
