Vonage and Comcast

I have gone through several VoIP providers with my Comcast HSI connection. All of them have had quality issues. ViaTalk, PhonePower, Broadvoice and Voicepulse. I am thinking of going with Vonage since my in-laws have had great success with them. However, they have Vonage over a AT&T DSL line.

I am wondering if Comcast was the reason in the first place that I have had issues with these other Voip carriers. I seemed to have tried EVERYTHING to help correct the issues; changed router from Netgear to Linksys, changed phone, put ATA between modem and router, etc. Nothing worked. I sometimes wondered if Comcast has limited VoIP traffic in hopes that customers will just go with the Comcast VoIP.

I then have read how others have complained about VoIP quality over Comcast. I also have read that Comcast & Vonage had come to an agreement back in 2008 about Vonage traffic over Comcast network. Will I still have the same quality issues as before with Comcast & Vonage? Has anybody had good success with Vonage & Comcast? I even recently got a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem and have their 22Mbs service so I know its not a speed issue.

I've used VoIP, including Vonage, on Comcast for 6 years now and never had a problem. If you are having an problems, it's probably due to some network issue locally. Based on my experience, there is no conspiracy to degrade VoIP by Comcast.

I've had it for over 3 years. Of course I've had some problems, but they have been few and far between.

Did you ever think it was your router???

Using Vonage over Comcast since Feb. of 2007. Haven't had a problem yet.

With Comcat I had no problems for over 4 years now. As long as your internet provider is good you shouldn't have any issues with Vonage.

Re: Vonage and Comcast

Yes, I did change my router. Went from a Netgear to a Linksys & still had audio dropouts. I was told by one VoIP provider to tell Comcast the following to help correct my issues:

You need to tell them that you have run several speed tests, and your line shows evidence of packet queuing in every test you run. Tell them that this causes interruptions whenever you stream media, and that you need them to address the QUALITY issues on the line. Make sure to stress to them that it is not a throughput or speed issue, but a QUALITY of connection issue

I contacted Comcast several times and this approach produced absolutely no results. Everytime, the tech rep has simply told me that everything looks good for my line from their end.

I'm gonna maybe give this one last try. Give Vonage a shot as my last choice. If they don't work out, I guess I'll either just stay with AT&T (UGHHH!!) or possibly go with a Comcast triple bundle & then have Comcast phone service. Ultimately not what I want to do, but I may not have a choice at this point. We'll see.

You cannot simply plug in a router - ANY router and expect good results. Other network traffic (web browsing, file loads, torrents, ftp, etc) will compete for the available IP connections and bandwidth. Unless the Vonage traffic is given priority using a QoS setting (or iptables rules) you will experience choppiness and drops when there is other traffic.

This is not difficult to setup but care must be given to give the Vonage adapter priority.

Which Vonage device did you use?

Re: Vonage and Comcast

Actually, this is one one of the main reasons I switched routers. The Netgear router I had didn't seem to have any kind of QoS settings. I replaced it with a Linksys WRT54G cause I had heard it was one of the better routers for VoIP. I then proceeded to adjust its QoS settings to give the VoIP adapter the highest priority for traffic. This still did not fully help.

I haven't tried Vonage yet so not sure which adapter device I will get. As stated, they will be my next attempt. As for the past tries, I was with Broadvoice, Voicepulse, Viatalk and most recently, Phone Power. The last two were under a BYOD plan and I was using a Grandstream HT502. I was using a supplied Linksys PAPT for VoicePulse and another company supplied adapter (can't remember the model) for Broadvoice.

Depending on the actual model of the WRT54G - it is a low end router.

You can GREATLY improve the QoS performance using a third party firmware like tomato or dd-wrt on your linksys.

I have 2 vonage adapters behind my WRT310N linksys running dd-wrt. I have had vonage for 6 years now with very few issues. It will take some tweaking of your router - believe me its not comcast

Re: Vonage and Comcast

I've used Comcast before with Vonage and didn't have very good luck. Here in Houston, we had Time Warner about 4 years ago before it became Comcast. I had hoped the transition would help my Vonage calls but it didn't. My Comcast internet would actually be down half a day every day and my HDTV would constantly pixelate. I've even got one of their terminal boxes in my back yard and they could never fix it (internet or HDTV). I was forced to go with AT$T for internet and DirecTV for HD. In all honesty I believe that Time Warner let the infrastructure go to hell knowing they would be leaving the Houston market soon and left a mess for Comcast. My AT$T Elite package (6.0 down/768 up) has been rock solid and Vonage has been great for me.

Having said that, I would agree with some of the others that your router could be the issue. I've always used pfSense for a firewall/router. The new version has traffic shaping/QoS with specific settings for VoIP systems with Vonage being one of the choices.

I've decided to give Comcast another chance though for Internet as a backup/fallover to my AT$T link. I actually had a Comcast salesman come by the other day and he assured me that the infrastructure in my area had been upgraded. Of course, he also said there were no caps on the internet service now. I told him I had to call BS on that one . . . :D

I feel that IF Comcast can get me a solid link that their network will be fine. I've got clients in Houston where Comcast is rock solid and AT$T sucks, then 10 blocks away it's the exact opposite. So I guess it's like real estate . . . Location, Location, Location.

Re: Vonage and Comcast

Are you renting your modem from Comcast or is it your own? Modem could be an issue, also check the Vonage phone adapter you have, because it may need a firmware download. I am a Comcast tech in Atlanta and had a service call of this type, turned out to be customer had to download firmware from Vonage web site. After that all was fine.
