Re: [TV] Picture is "frozen"

I have been having problems the last couple days in Tampa since the added new HD channels.

I get a random error messages on HD channels saying the channel is not available and to go back to the previous channel.

Brighthouse really is starting to suck eggs.

Re: [TV] Picture is "frozen"

Internet was down by the time I got home yesterday (6p), but TV seemed ok. Rebooted modem, no dice. Checked connections- no problems. Called BHN last night and they had me reboot modem and re-connect everything- still no dice. Modem page reports the downstream channel is "Locked" but the upstream channel is "Not Ready" and modulation is 16QAM instead of 256QAM. Modem page cycles from Locked to Not Ready on downstream channel while upstream channel stays in a "Not Ready" state. BHN said someone would be out Tuesday! Ouch! Flipped channels around and most of the HD channels are fine. Then later last night I went to watch a recorded show from low end analog channels- lots of snow. Checked other channels- some look ok, others do not. I've got 2 TivoHDs with Cisco Tuning Adapters- throughout the evening they kept reporting "your tuning adapter has been connected" which tells me BHN was sending out reset signals to most attached devices (I would guess). I called last night about 1am to report some channels look poor, however I was on hold >10minutes, so I figured I would wait until today.

Called again this morning to see if a tech could be out sooner since now channels are acting funny. Waited on hold for 40 minutes and reported TV now having issues too... got appointment moved to Monday. Internet still totally down :(. Thankfully, I have a SprintPCS phone that can work as an Access Point :)

/edit/ Here's a screen shot. I guess I just had two different problems and they were a coincidence?

Re: [TV] Picture is "frozen"

This morning my Internet was down. I am not sure why, but I rebooted my modem and it still wouldn't connect.

The other day, I noticed my upstream signal was around 50... and the downstream was reporting 0... here is my current info:

Upstream

Downstream

I dunno what the deal is... and my TV is still pixelating and freezing.

So apparently, it was a coincidence... I have a 4 outlet tap (or pad?) in my back yard and my next door neighbor complained of the same problem- TV looks OK, but internet down. They called BHN and have a Tuesday appointment. I guess on Friday BHN sent someone out and installed (what looks to me) an indoor splitter for my house and my neighbors. I don't have any idea why BHN would have installed a splitter on a tap instead of installing a tap that would support the number of drops needed. I also don't know why a tech would have installed a splitter on my drop with as many tickets that I have opened on bad PQ and intermittent signal problems.

I removed the splitter from my drop and it immediately resolved my internet problem (I moved it to another drop). I called BHN and moved my appt to Wednesday in case the dispatch for my neighbor's house jacks up my signal again...

Re: [TV] Picture is "frozen"

Phdeez, That tap was designed to feed 4 houses. If it's full and they had to put you on a splitter, then it's possible there is an abandoned cable connected to the tap. You could ask the tech to please take the time to find out which cable is dead and remove it from the tap. Then plug your's in. The other scenario is if all the customers are active subscribers on that tap. In that case the tech should turn it in to the construction department for a plant re-design and correction. The tech will not be able to correct that problem on the spot because they are not allowed to replace taps to avoid creating signal balancing problems.

Re: [TV] Picture is "frozen"

cableguy: thanks for the response. I went out today and looked at the tap again... 2 of the 4 outlets have a "security sheath" on them, but I took a look at the addresses tagged on the drops and two go to the same address... so either he installed another drop to split a cable modem and TV, or he just didn't want to remove one of the sheathed connections (since one of the two sheathed connections goes to the same address).

Either way, a tech should be coming out tomorrow to fix the neighbor's service so I'll make sure the wife tells the tech not to move our drop since it interrupts our internet.

Re: [TV] Picture is "frozen"

There's no reason to have 2 drops nowdays running to 1 house. It serves no purpose. They should be able to connect you to one of the ports with the security shield. Perhaps those ports were being used in the past and that's when you got stuck on the splitter. So whoever discoed those customers was late for lunch one and didn't bother removing one of you from the splitter. I'm willing to bet one of those drops going to the same address is abandoned.

Re: [TV] Picture is "frozen"

I agree with Cableguy. there is not a point in having 2 drops. If you have a lot of outlets and need more signal sometimes we run a 11 drop or amp the outlets.
