Vonage iPod Touch Application

Since I do not own an iPhone, I downloaded the other Vonage application for the iPod Touch. I currently have the $4.99 per month Vonage Customer-on-Hold plan, which I plan to get rid of as soon as I can port that number to Google Voice.

After installing the application, it asked me to create a username and password. The instructions on the screen seem to suggest I couldn't use my current Vonage logon username, so I create a new one slightly different by one character with the same password and e-mail address. After I did that I got an e-mail saying my Vonage mobile username is now the same as my Vonage username. Go figure.

I was initially given $1.00 Vonage Mobile credit to my account, which looks like it has no connection to my Vonage account. I made two brief calls, and when logging onto the Vonage Mobile website it said they were free. I guess domestic calls are free.

The outgoing Caller ID is something else I find interesting. It's a 15 digit number which displays on my cellphone as 883-510-xxxxxxxxx. Anyone I call would think the call is coming from outside the U.S./Canada. In looking up country code +883, I came across articles like these:

This got me curious in now knowing that 883 is the country code for the internet. I tried on several phones lines to dial the number showing in my caller ID to see if my iPod Touch would ring (011-883-510-xxxxxxxxx). No luck. Just "my call cannot be completed as dialed" messages.

What you have is an iNum number.

People can call you through an access number. There are only a handful of access numbers at the moment (just 7 in the US alone).

I just tried dialing through one of the access numbers (213 area code), and yes it does connect to the Vonage application on my iPod Touch if the application is open. If it's not open, the connection is just dead air and then cuts off. In fact, dialing 011-883-510-xxxxxxxxx from my Vonage line also connects the same way, and the call doesn't appear in my call history (at least not yet).

One thing I did discover about the iPod Touch application is it makes no sound at all when a call comes in. The only way you know is it says there is an incoming call on the screen, then you can select to answer it.

Incoming calls this way (the app must be running, no alert tone, plus a user must dial an 883+ number to reach me), is totally useless for me, but I guess there are others out there who may find this useful.

One way to get around the access number dialing is to have CallCentric forward to your 883 number. I just tested it and it works. No charge (on a Dirt Cheap DID) for the forward either. That will at least give you a regular DID you can associate with the Touch. The issue of having no useful alert though .. I don't know. I think you're right. It's pretty useless for incoming calls.
