[CATV] Crush Line-Up (LHV ONLY) - Feedback Requested

All,

When we launched the new Crush Line-Up in LHV we launched on a new re-done line-up. We put each HD equivalent within he 1000s to make it easier for finding them also allowing you to just channel surf thru HD only channels.

For instance,

If ESPN was on channel 333 the HD is on 1333
If TNT was on channel 392 the HD is on 1392

etc..

Just curious on feedback of the new line-up. The plan is to roll this out across the rest of the markets at some point in the next 6 months.

Re: Crush Line-Up in LHV. New Lineup.. Feedback Requested..

I don't have HD, but this is the best arrangement I've seen. It's far better than interdigitating the HD among SD where each SD channel with an HD counterpart appears twice consecutively in the Guide. It was a very clever idea to use the same three LSDs and simply adding a leading one.

I have a request. Could you please put the channel lineup online as an XLS? Or at least in an HTML page that could be converted to a spreadsheet. Why? Because that PDF you have is impossible to use. 1) It prints out far too small. 2) It can't be rearranged to list only channels relevant to my use. 3) It can't be sorted by channel. 4) It can't be sorted by channel name. 5) The channels I have are scattered all over the place on it making it a chore to find anything. I want to have a single-page channel listing of my channels, listed by channel number on one side of the page and by channel name on the other. In a typeface that's large enough for mere mortals to read.

Re: Crush Line-Up in LHV. New Lineup.. Feedback Requested..

Jason,

The present system penalizes the HD customers with a lot of unnecessary button pushing!

These STBs we have are pretty intelligent!

Why can't they be programmed so that if I enter "3" on an HD box connected with Component or HDMI cables, the box tunes to KYW-HD. And if I enter "3" on an SD box, it tunes to KYW-SD? Similarly with the CableCard enabled TVs. If you have a CableCard, you have an HD capable TV, and likely will never tune to KYW-SD! So why is it necessary to enter "1003" rather than just "3".

In a previous post I asked when the all-digital lineup would be available on various Guide web sites. You pointed out that it was available on ZAP2IT. But, it is still not available on TITAN TV, among others. It would also be nice to see it available on the RCN website in a downloadable, reconfigurable format, as mentioned in the previous post.

Note Taken on the easy downloaded line-up. I'll get something for you.

Regarding why can't i just hit 3 and goto the HD. It's not an option right now, but good news. From what I understand in Aptiv 3.5 this is available. Thus if you tune to a channel and if an HD was avail, it will GOTO the HD channel.

Timeline on Aptiv 3.5 is still up in the air. I'm hopeful in the next 4 months..

Re: Crush Line-Up in LHV. New Lineup.. Feedback Requested..

While, I am not crushed yet....

I DO like this idea. It makes a lot of sense :)

SecTV has always done their numbering of the HD locals this way. Ch 3 (CBS) = 503, Ch 5 (FOX PHILLY) = 505, Ch 6 (ABC) = 506, Ch 13 (FOX NYC) = 513, etc etc etc.

RCNs numbering was always confusing. Ch 6 (ABC) = 180, Ch 3 (CBS) = 181 .......etc........wtf? lol.

PS. Please bring crush to Bethlehem off Stefko Blvd. Verizon trucks have been running fiber on Jill St :o

I too am not crushed yet, but I also strongly agree that all the HD's should be together. I like that I can find all the basic HD's between 170 and 190 today. I'm not thrilled about four digit channel numbers cause of the extra button press, but I like them all together.

Thanks for soliciting feedback. It's good to know you guys are listening, and care what we think.

I think the thought process might be:

if you added 500 -- 333 sd channel would become channel 833 for hd. Not a hard task to subtract 500 and realize the sd channel is 333. But 1333 shows it directly without the math.

Just my 2 cents ...

Re: [CATV] Crush Line-Up (LHV ONLY) - Feedback Requested

Jason,

An additional comment on the LHV Crush Line-Up. The present virtual channel numbering system inhibits channel browsing. I would like to see the 1000 series of virtual channels numbers include both the HD version of channels, plus the non-HD version if there is no HD version.

If I want to browse the channels, I can tune to channel 2, then by pressing CHANNEL UP, I can browse through channels 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, etc. If I tune to channel 1002 and then press CHANNEL UP, I browse through channels 1002, 1003, 1006, 1007, etc.

RCN doesn't want me to browse through RCN TV, or WWOR SD? It is particularly annnoying that I can't browse from 1010 NBC HD to 1012 Accuweather SD.

While I may prefer to watch the HD channels, if I am browsing, I want to see all available channels.

You could, for example, put the SD channels in the 0xxx series of virtual channels, the HD channels in the 1xxx series of virtual channels, and mixed HD/SD in the 2xxx series of virtual channels. That could satisfy everyone!

Having all the HD channels appear consecutively is definitely the best way to go. I'm sure all the other markets would be happy to have it this way.

Jason,

I think the new lineup for LHV looks great! Can't wait for the switch in Ridley. It will finally alleviate the confusion with the current lineup - which I still can't get used to :( .
Keep up the great work.

I too would like to cast a vote for an excel format as well, so we can delete channels we don't get before printing it out.

Re: [CATV] Crush Line-Up (LHV ONLY) - Feedback Requested

While I can't say much about HOW it impacted my channel browsing since i'm still another 16 days out from being crushed.. I will say this.... The numbering sequence is pretty dope. I was talking with a coworker this past week about it, and we both agreed that by simply putting a one in front of the SD channel converts it to HD makes it real easy to "train" people that there is a HD version out there. And the best way to see, is to add a one in front of the channel they want in HD.

Side note, and I'm not sure if this is done yet, but when pressing guide, is there an option to only view HD channels in crushed areas? That'd make it easy for me to check to see what's on TV as I currently, and will, only watch HD channels.

And, Jason, I will say this... I am against having your box pick whether you want to see the HD channel on how you're hooked up. Due to the simple fact there may be an issue with the HD feed that makes it unbearable to watch, yet, the SD feed is fine and a lot more watchable. Just my two cents.

And I will say this.... this is pretty cool being a test market as far as channel line-ups! Are you planning on rolling this out to all other markets if you feel this is successful in this market? And also, we haven't had any confirmation, on whether or not HD Net and HD Net Movies will be sticking around after the crush completion. The general consensus currently is it's still available to "Premier" customers. However, in other markets it's in the HD expanded tier. What's the plan with these two channels post crush? (It's simply a curious question, I don't watch these channels much anyway.)

Re: [CATV] Crush Line-Up (LHV ONLY) - Feedback Requested

I will put in my vote with shadyman777.

While I like the idea, in theory, that if you put in a channel and that channel is available as an HD channel you would automatically be tuned to the HD offering. But not every show on say ABC-HD is actually broadcast in HD. In that case I usually hit the SD channel so I have a full screen instead of the black bars on both sides.

So there would have to be an override available for me to be happy..LOL!

Also if the guide would show both the SD and HD channels together that would be great. 06-WPVI, followed by 1006-WPVI-HD, followed by 07-WFMZ, followed by 1007-WFMZ-HD, etc.

This also could be an optional menu setting, as I am sure not everyone would like that method of display, instead of the ascending numerical view.

I really like this idea. It may be clunky looking in the TV guide having both channels go side by side with the first being SD and second being HD, but it'd work. I think it'd be best if it were a setting option... just in case I don't like it after seeing/using it :P.

ARGH!! NONONO!! :) I definitely do NOT want to have to page through HD channels that I do not use and do not want to see.

If anyone at RCN is considering this awful idea, PLEASE make it work this way on only the HD boxes. Send a different guide omitting the HD channels entirely to the SD boxes. Actually, that's a really good idea anyway. Give me a guide that shows only what I have access to. No HD, No Spanish channels.

The HD channel would only be listed next to the SD channel if access is given to that channel only. I agree it shouldn't be side by side on all boxes.

However, RCN won't give you a list that shows only channels you get, they want you to see the other options out there... you can however, skip these channels from showing up in your guide via your box I believe. RCN won't give you the option not to see what they offer in hopes you'll get them

I dunno...having SD channel then hd channel could be kind of clunky. However if we had an option to ONLY show HD channels that would be real nice.

Re: [CATV] Crush Line-Up (LHV ONLY) - Feedback Requested

I know Fios, TWC and Cablevision have been toying with 4 digit channel numbers for some time now, but are they compatable with all Cable Card equipment?

If so, simply adding a 1 in front is a great idea, until Aptiv 3.5.

Cablevision uses SARA on SA Settops and they have the ability to show the HD broadcast on SD numbers. For example KYW 3, type 03, and voila - it's in HD.

However, the option still needs to be there to get to the SD feed just in case. Maybe the current show is not offered in HD, so why record it in HD with pillarbars and take away extra precious hard drive space on a DVR? I'm not sure how Cablevision folks are dealing with that, but right here on BBR there were complaints about it in their forums: »SD channel mapping to be replaced by HD feed.

I don't know, but DirecTV and Dish Network users enjoy their HD guide. That's mostly because of their guide software though... can't help you out there!

This is exactly what i'd wish we'd have pre and post crush. it'd make it THAT much more easier for someone who doesn't grasp the idea of a "one" in front of the SD channel number. Ie.. Older people who get convinced by their younger relatives to get HD. It's easier to say, press guide, then select "HD Programming".... or something to that effect. Ya know?

And Jason, I think you should re-roll those stickers we had many years ago that had the channel list on them. That'd also help the older generation. Regardless if you're sending paper lists. Even with TV guide on the box, and being 24 (14 or so at the time stickers were rolled out), I still liked those stickers. They were VERY useful.

You can filter the channels in the guide to only HD channels, or ones that you subscribe to. If you hit the guide button, then hit A, a list of options will show up. You can show HD channels only, a list of favorites or skip a ton of channels you don't get. I use it to skip all the SD channels that I get in HD, it helps those who want the "out of sight, out of mind" approach.

Well, yeah. What better reason could one ask either to have a guide without HD listings or the ability to filter the HD listings from the full guide.

My point was never to filter *for* HD content, but to exclude it. And the Spanish stuff. And Fox News.

Hi Jason. Just wondering if there will be multiple "crushed" lineups similar to what exists today (rebuild and non-rebuild). Or will I continue to have the same channels being in a non-rebuild area?
