[Availability] Att uverse
Does anybody know when theres going to be att uverse in monroe county (fl keys) any time soon? Looking to get a faster connection which comcast offers 16\2. Have been a att user for about 8yrs. Thinking about moving over to comcast if no upgrade soon by att.

Re: [Availability] Att uverse
I'm in Broward, and I'll tell you how it's going in my neighborhood.
All of our utilities are underground, so when new stuff is going in they have to locate and mark all existing stuff so they don't dig into it.
About two years ago, they surveyed and marked out all the utilities. But nothing happened further, all the paint they used faded in the sun, so they came out again and located and marked it all again. They have done this at least three times.
Last summer, on one street they bored and placed conduit for the new fiber and placed new cabinets.
This summer, they did the same on the other street.
There hasn't been any activity in the last six to eight weeks, so maybe they are done.
But we still haven't been offered U-verse yet. All the adds they mail us for special deals on packages are for ordinary phone, DSL, and resold DirecTV dish.
Maybe things move faster where you are, maybe not. But here in west Broward, it's been over two years since they started and still no service yet.

Well they were hiring for installers in the keys a while back so it shouldn't be too long I wouldn't think.

Global warming(ocean water rising) will get to the Keys before U-Verse will. What a joke. It takes 6 months to get 1 neighborhood ready. Only like 3 neighborhoods in Broward County are U-Verse live. Why as AT&T even advertising U-Verse around here(on TV and at the AT&T store) when like 1% of the people can actually get it? Now that Comcast's DOC SIS 3 is live around here, they'd better get their ass in gear.
Rolling out FIOS is alot faster than rolling out U-Verse right? I mean they just lay the fiber and install the cabinets and pedastals. Having to condition the copper for U-Verse must make it alot slower than a FIOS rollout. I'm no MBA but rolling out a half obsolete technology at a glacial pace can't be good for business.

It's more about ROI...they already have copper in the ground that has been paid for so their investment is rather little when compared to verizons fios.
That is why it is being done the way it is.
I think they should have done ftth too, but that would mean spending a whole lot more.

Tell me about it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't one of the biggest selling points about U-Verse, and AT&T's decision to use copper instead of going all fiber at the time was the fact that it was suppose to be faster to deploy.
What the hell happened?

Even with all the extra man hours used for conditioning the copper, its still cheaper than FTTH? Also fiber is getting cheaper apparently.
If they do go FTTH, it'll be interesting to see how much money they would've saved by using the line conditioning man hours for laying the "last mile" of fiber.

Its a bit more than 1% in Broward, but I agree that deployment is slow.
Keep in mind that AT&T had problems with the City of Fort Lauderdale that were only worked out about 2 months ago. Easement issues if I recall correctly.

Florida is a special case. There was a manager there that used to brag about providing telephone service for $13 a month. He did it by neglecting the plant. There is a lot of repair work to do even without the Uverse work. Thank the Florida utilities board- that held down rates on phone service until the plant had widespread failures. They have only recently allowed the rates to rise and allow new plant to be put in. Uverse only costs about 20% of what fios costs .

the ATT store has a sign that says U-Verse is here.
But it is not in my 'hood. From what I can tell, it is in a very very select few high scale neighborhoods

I am sure that your impression is mistaken.
I have been told that AT&T absolutely does not cherry pick neighborhoods. ;)
Of course the person who told me that was unable to explain why my neighborhood (literally a stone's throw from a major university campus) did not have a remote DSLAM to be able to deliver 6 mbps DSL, nor any VRADs to deliver U-verse service.

heelsfan, I can't comment on your a particular area fo "hand picking" neighborhoods, but I say without a doubt, for the majority of the "old" bellsouth area, that is about as far from the truth as you can get. It's based on many things, but from what I've seen, "upscale" isn't a big determining factor in the selection.

I would agree...there has been some work in million plus dollar home neighborhoods where they will never buy the service because you can only have up to eight boxes.
Don't know who thought that one up, but they usually go on number of homes served out of an existing crossbox from what I understand. They are doing more dense areas first...rich or poor.
There are a lot of areas they won't buy it because they have too many tv's to hook up and there are areas where they can't buy it because they'll never pass the credit check!

I agree with Tel and alfnoid. I think density is a key element. An ROI function that assesses density, product mix utilization, and hardware buildout costs would surely be a useful tool for those in the planning unit. One could also theorize that product mix utilization might be closely associated with the area's demographics.
My dated (late 1970's) apartment complex is almost immediately adjacent to the crossbox and DSLAM that services it. There was also recent (last 3-4 years) fiber work in the area. I would suspect the current demographics of the complex to have a high degree of interest in broadband and video services, but little use for POTS and/or VOIP.
I have also seen VRAD's magically appear, without an adjacent crossbox or DSLAM (but had new fiber), in a high-density apartment area that is immediately adjacent to a large college student demographic.

I live in just such an area, literally a stone's throw from the campus of a major university. No DSLAM equiped RTs or VRADs in sight (but there are some several miles away in suburban areas), and my DSL connections go back to the CO (~10000 ft). When I asked several local techs if there was any hope for either a VRAD or a DSLAM equipped RT, I was told to not hold my breath waiting for it to happen. ;)

Re: [Availability] Att uverse
In the scenario that I've observed at Clemson, a new VRAD appeared directly across the street from the Esso Club. U-Verse is now a possibility for the multitude of 1960's and 1970's apartments and a +/- 2006 condo complex.
On the other hand, I have a colleague whose ADSL feed is from the Clemson CO. He can't get U-Verse until a VRAD is deployed to service his neighorhood.
Maybe a BellSouth suit tailgates near the Esso Club ... Can tailgaters plug an RG directly into the VRAD? ... No need for the satellite tripods anymore ... ;-)

I cant not say how I know this for a fact, if you want more info just PM me, but I do know that they are "cherrypicking" the more eligible upscale neighborhoods first.
