[CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
On Saturday morning my Moxi suddenly started restarting itself. It would get all the way to the end up its bootup and then restart again. At one point it restarted for almost an hour straight. Right now it is staying on for a few hours at a time, but the picture is unwatchable because it keeps freezing and is completely pixilated. Charter is sending someone out but can't get there until Thursday. Anything I can do in the meantime?

Did the phone rep give you any suggestions as to what the cause of your problem may be? Knowing that may give us some ideas to try.
In the chance its a heat related problem, make sure it has enough ventilation on all sides and see if there are any obvious dust accumulations around or in the unit. (don't disassemble it though obviously).
If its a hardware problem in the moxi, there isn't much you can do..

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
The cs rep had no suggestions at all other than sending out a tech. Heat is definitely not an issue. It is in a wide open space. I'm always careful that the unit isn't dusty. I'm guessing it's a hardware problem. I just hope they have a new unit to give me.

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
You could bypass the Moxi if you are comfortable doing so, so you can at least watch TV in the meantime. Just recommend plugging it back in so the tech can do his stuff when they arrive.
If the box is swapped, you will lose all recorded content if you have any.

And if you live in my area you won't get a Moxi back, instead you'll get a Motorola with a tiny hard drive that you can't program from the internet and will not accept an external hard drive.

The cs rep assured me I was getting a Moxi. Of course I've yet to find a Charter rep that knows what they are talking about so who knows if it's true.

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
with the resets and the pixelation it sounds like it may be a signal issue. Do you have any other TV's hooked up?

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
Yes. When I first got the Moxi, we went through several boxes and several setups before they got it to work properly. The way it is split, 50% goes to the Moxi. The other 50% goes to the HSI and the other 4 TVs. All of the other TVs (2 HD) work fine, as does the HSI. The Moxi is the only thing with an issue. There have been no changes on my end.

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
When I had a Moxi this happened multiple times. The cause was an over heating unit. I had more than enough ventilation but it still over heated. The Overheating was so bad that it had heat burn marks in the coaxial inlet.
You can test over heating by two ways. Unplug the unit for an hour or two and see how it operates following restart. Option two place a fan that can blow on the back side of the unit to see if it stops restarting. Most like the overheating is your cause.

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
Whatever the issue is, I ended up just unplugging the Moxi last night because I lost the picture all together. It will boot, but all I get is the "If you subscribe to this channel..." message on every channel. I think it's fried.

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
Tech came out yesterday afternoon. Box was indeed fried. Luckily he brought a new Moxi with him and it's working like a charm. Very glad to have my Moxi back.
Thank you to the tech on Charter Direct that made sure the tech that came to my house was going to bring a Moxi to me and not one of the other DVRs.

They don't give out Moxi's anymore in my area. I miss it dearly. No more external storage or programming from the internet. Why can you get them and I can't?

Ditto.
My Moxi after 4.5 years died, lights out. Could not get another one. The motorola DVR is horrible compared to the Moxi.

The motorola is a big steaming pile of @U(#. If they can't come up with something better than this I'm going to take my business elsewhere.

I switched to a Tivo. It has some good features but all in all MOXI was better and is less costly.

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
Just to clarify, when I say that a got a new Moxi, I mean new to me. It is a refurbished unit. That is all they have here. That model isn't manufactured anymore due to the issues it has. My fried unit will also be refurbed and given to some other lucky soul. As to why I got one and you can't? All I can guess is that you have a higher population in your area than I do. More Moxis to go around here. Either that or I just got lucky.
The tech also mentioned that he and all of the other Charter employees in this area tested the Moxi 2 (the black one) in their own homes for about 2 months. Then they all got sent to St. Louis. They are further testing them there and then plan on rolling them out everywhere. No idea on a timeframe though.

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
In Madison. I've been through 3 Moxi's and I really liked the interface, but I'm just tired of losing all my recordings. The first one lasted 3 years, the second one lasted 6 months, the third lasted 3 months. Last 2 were refurbs.
Considered the new retail version, but the $800 upfront was too much. Went with Tivo. Two weeks now, so far, so good.
Interface is not quite as good as Moxi, but way better than the Moto DVR. Also like the downloading to computer.

Does your Tivo have a card slot? If so, what are you paying for it, and your Tivo subscription? Also if you don't mind what did you pay for your Tivo and what is the model?
I want to solve the problem of losing the programs I have saved on the Charter DVR when it fails. I understand I can transfer shows to DVDs with a Tivo, is that correct? TIA... for any response. :)

Re: [CATV] Moxi keeps restarting
Yes, TiVo uses Cablecards for authorization. I believe it's $2/month for the card, but I haven't actually received a bill yet. I bought the
TiVo HD model as a refurb directly from TiVo for $199, and took the annual subscription at $129 for the year. I also added an external drive to increase storage space.
You can transfer shows off the TiVo onto a PC or Mac over a local network and then burn to DVD if you like.
Of course, I've just started and am no expert yet.

Thanks for the info! Being a relative novice myself, I've been looking at Tivos for the last 3 years and procrastinating. :) Think I'll check them out again now.
