Re: [NV] Giving Cox the Boot

When we moved here in Aug 2005, into a newly developed subdivision, there was only Embarq DSL available. COX still hadn't installed everything they needed. So we got it, and my speeds topped out at 512k/128k. I will give Embarq credit where it's due: the connection was very stable and reliable. But it was also very slow.

So I called Embarq tech support. They were helpful, but said that was all the speed I would ever get, that I couldn't sync any higher due to equipment limitations. I found it odd that a brand new development would have equipment limitations, but I didn't have much choice, and the connection was stable.

Fast forward a few months. COX and the developer finally figured out how to get the cable installed (I blame the developer -- KB Home -- who sucks) and I switched as soon as I could. COX is a lot faster. There are a few stability and slow-down issues here and there, but nothing that seems excessive. It's a little pricey, with our cable bill running just shy of $100 each month (no digital, no premium channels).

But since your wife has decided that you no longer like COX, I guess there's not much t do. :/

Re: [NV] Giving Cox the Boot

Centurylink has speeds up to 25mb bonded ADSL2 in Vegas for business and up to 10mb for residential. Upload is not capped at 384. You can get 25/2 or 10/1. It will depend on your distance from the CO.

I know being in a cable forum, you will find that most people do not like DSL. I have DSL, and it is fine. Latency, is around 8-15ms to the first hop.

Everyone's mileage differs. So if you aren't happy with Cox, give Centurylink a try, or at least send an IM to Embarq_Joey and he can get you the specifics on what speeds you can get.

As for the bad comments about Embarq, they have a higher rating than Cox; 75%.

Best of Luck with your decision!

You'll pay less for the first year, then the bill will skyrocket to $180-$200 a month, and you'll be stuck in a 2 year contract with Dish. Don't get me wrong, I have Dish and love the service more so than Cox TV, but I won't touch Embarq with a ten foot pole. Cox phone service operates and sounds just like any other, but better. I sure as hell couldn't tell the difference between Embarq and Cox Digital Phone Service - aside from the better quality.

I'm just giving you a fair warning that all is not as it seems with Embarq/CenturyLink. Very few of Embarq's customers can get anything over their 1.5 Mbps tier.

If you're looking for something cheaper that can make both of you happy, stick with Cox for internet, grab Vonage, and sign up for Dish.

Well, what I basically tell people who are wanting to switch from one provider to the other is to compare them side by side with each of their offers. Company A that you have been with for awhile might cost $95 (say before tax, cant get out of not paying tax) a month, but you have to look at what you are getting with your package, is your money well spent for the channel line-up, phone, HSI, etc. Then look at company B that is giving you it all for $70 a month, now is this $70 a month going to be worth your while, is that price going to stay the same or jump up $10 then next month and then jump again, ending up costing you more money in the long run and not receivng the same amount of channels, internet speed / quality , phone, etc. In the end, it is truelly up to the customer and what they want, if you are wanting to switch to the new provider just to save $20 the first few months, then its up to you. I like to have my hard earned money spent on a provider that has been giving me great service throughout the years and hopefully will continue to provide that service. Just my 2 cents...

i saw today on the road (highway 98) a century link truck deplying a thick cable underneath. could this be fiber?

if so, i hope they will take advantage of it and give us fiber speeds (ha)

could be any number of things. there are a lot of "thick cable" in the plant world.

if so, i hope they will take advantage of it and give us fiber speeds (ha)
and just what do you consider "fiber speeds". aside from lusfiber, and fios, paxio, and the new tds telecom deployment that was a muni project, all other muni fiber projects have speeds (including uploads) that are matched with d3 or vdsl2 (what u-verse and apparently qwest are offering now).

Don't bet on it.

Innovation and Embarq are two words (well, a name) that are on the complete opposite side of the spectrum.

Fibre isn't a thick cable.

Fibre isn't a thick cable.
traditional "premise" fiber isn't, however, if this is a fiber trunk line, carrying multiple single-mode stands to be split among a neighborhood in a "direct burial" type layout, the resulting cable would be quite thick, as there would be a central rigid core, followed by the fibers (which are covered in cladding and a kevlar bundle and coated again). each set of fibers is then protected and wrapped together and the entire resulting bundle is then wrapped in kevlar protection and covered in plastic. i've seen fiber bundles as large as several inches in diameter.
however, since robl27 doesn't give exact dimensions, it would be difficult to say. however, there is a possibility for both fiber and traditional copper twisted pairs to be thick, hence my response above.

He must have switched to Embarq and doesn't have the time to wait around for the site to load. ;)

Re: [NV] Giving Cox the Boot

Actually, My son and daughter in law gave birth to a little girl on Sunday and I have been a little busy as you can imagine.

I am still not convinced that dropping Cox is such a wise thing to do. My wife is returning home this Sunday and I plan to try to convince her that we should just upgrade the Tivo to HD and add the cable cards.

The only problem that I am having is that I cannot seem to get the real scoop on what the all movie and HD package with my internet is really going to cost me per month.

I am n not talking specials, I m talking the real month to month cost. With out that, I do not have much of a leg to stand on as Embarq sulpplied her with what the bill is with specials and what it will fall back too.

If any of you can help, I sure would appreciate it.

I think I've read the entire thread, apologies if this was already suggested. Two ideas: 1 - get Dish for TV if your wife demands it, and just keep Cox for internet (drop down to mid-range, almost the same for most folks); or, 2 - get a friend with Cox service to "adopt" your email address as one of their allowance - you can use it from any ISP.

Good luck. I wouldn't touch Embarq (or whatever they are this week) with a ten-foot coax,

Re: [NV] Giving Cox the Boot

Outside our area, but a refreshing profitable strategy in a greed driven industry, with investors being told the internet is our most profitable product, and consumers being told of more price increases...

$13 for City Telecom 100 Mbps Internet service, and they have a money back guarantee if you are not getting 80% of the promised speed... Interesting to note, City Telecom also had a 34% increase in profits in the last fiscal year. "The network has been cash flow positive since 07. We're debt free with 10% revenue growth and 30% EBITDA growth," the company says. "Our stock is up 200% in 12 months, and the market is starting to realize what we're doing."

City Telecom strategy is to commoditize bandwidth, to make 100 megabits the industry norm. "Our plan is to win by offering the best service at the lowest possible cost structure. Thirteen dollars is not a lot, but if you scale it and drive your cost base down, it's a beautiful business to be in."

That's what I would do and is exactly what I have here. Dish HD for video and Cox for internet. Their DVR is awesome...Cox's DVR does not hold a candle to the Dish DVR. I think I have like 55 hrs of HD capacity, plus I can throw on as many external USB hard drives as I want to step up the capacity. I have a 750 gig external with tons of HD movies and entire seasons of HD shows. Plus being able to watch my recordings in the back bedroom off the same box while the living room is watching another channel is another big plus.

Re: [NV] Giving Cox the Boot

I gave Cox a boot, too pricey. Now have Century Link pure DSL and its a lot more stable and consistent. Its more like a classic car with a V8 than a new 4 CYL turbo charged.

Got rid of Dish too. All I need is Win 7's Media Center with OTA tuner, Boxee and a server with all my videos on it.
