[motherboard] Looks like the CPU or motherboard died last ni

My APC unit warned of an issue with the battery last night. I decided to move my PC off the battery side (concerned that when the battery did finally discharge it would cause bells and whistles to go off).

Shut the down to move things off the APC and tried to power it back on and noticed nothing on the LCD. Also - no power to the mouse and turning on the LCD it states there is no DVI signal. No beeps of any kind as well and the mouse works just fine on my laptop.

To see if it was just the monitor\video card I powered on the PC and then tried to RDP into it from my wife's PC - no dice. No bulging caps and no beeps either. At work I have tested all of the power cables - 20 pin, additional 4 pin on the 20 pin, and checked the motherboard aux power. All are normal and I do not have a video card to swap - trying to see if our tech guy here has a PCI video card just in case.

Not sure if there is anything else to test specific to the motherboard or CPU without having spare parts to switch out.

so - I guess I might be looking at replace my dual core XP5200+ with a AMD quad core...

I do some gaming when I can - love HL and will be getting EP3 when it is out and do other general things of course - email, Office, surf, Seti@Home.

I would not necessarily mind Intel if the price is right. Bill Me Laster has a 6 month same as cash or there is a MicroCenter about an hour away. I do not care for MicroAtx boards and use onboard sound. eSATA is mandatory btw.

No real idea on what to look for right now. Need it sooner rather than later....

Have you tried another video card? My HIS Radeon went out on me Friday, and it caused my system not to POST. When I removed the card (it has onboard video as well) it POSTed fine. Replaced the card with a new GEForce and all is well with the world. (mostly) So if the video card is dead, it could cause what you're seeing.

Right now - I have no extra video cards. My wifes PC has a AGP but this mb does not have an AGP slot.

Bought a cheap PCI video card - no dice... :(

This is a quick wish list I put together for a AMD system - 3 motherboards and a couple CPUs and ram. I only added in the PhenomII 965 because of a combo with the Gigabyte board for $289 for both.

Need to get a list together for my wife's rebuild. If I am going to do BillMeLater - might as well replace hers as well.

For fun I picked up a Dual Core Calisto X2 550, then installed it onto a motherboard that had the SB710 or the SB750 Southbridge - a quick change of a BIOS setting, and I have a quad core deneb core processor at 3.1 Ghz stock. Being the black edition, I was able to overclock it to 3.4 with the stock voltage. Rock solid. Something to think about if you want to save some coin and are willing to gamble as YMMV as to core unlockability.

Nice board - does the BIOS trick only work with that board? Might be a worthwhile experiment for my wife's PC. I just wish the board had eSATA...

Any remarks about a Phenom 9650 quad? It would be $8 more....

The BIOS trick works with any motherboard with a SB710 or a SB750. I have personal experience with both using Gigabyte motherboards... one for enabling the 4th core on a tri-core, and as mentioned above, enabling the other 2 cores on the X2 550.

I do not have personal experience with the Phenom 9650 - but I do with the Propus

I put one of these in my SageTV server to replace the tri-core and it flies. Lack of L3 cache made little difference for that box with it's tasks.

Oh, and the Gigabyte board above does have a back-panel eSATA connector.

Looks like the motherboard is dead - friend tested the CPU and it posted. I might check with a local shop and see if they can test the ram just in case.

And the ram died last night - looks like the mobo is bad after all.
