Who/what do you use for Internet access?

Do they give you a private ip? Do they make you use a proxy server for Internet Access.

It is possible that they are using QoS to rate limit your connection for various protocols.

I see that it doesn't matter if the traffic is encrypted or not.

I have seen some weird things with foreign ISPs. I am mostly familiar with isps in Israel, Poland, Russia, and the Ukraine.

If it's an ISP problem (which it sounds like it might be) - you can try VPN somewhere in Europe or the US - or even Israel assuming there is bandwidth peering between Israel and Jordan.

Ok, from what I discovered Their zain@work plans offer 20GB download cap.

How close do you run to that cap? It may be that you're hitting that cap and they are throttling. They may also be limiting you when they detect "voip" traffic.

The other thing that could be happening is excess packet loss, that will cause retransmits (for tcp, not udp), that will slow your connection.

Also, how are your general line statistics for the dsl modem?

What is the upstream sync rate achieved by your DSL modem?

What protocol (PPPoE, PPPoA, RFC 2684 bridged, RFC 2684 routed) is used on your DSL line?

When the failure occurs, does the modem lose DSL sync? If PPP is used, does that connection drop? Does your public IP address change? How long does it take to reestablish connection?

Does Jordan have "unbundling" (when you tried different ISPs, were you still going through the same (ILEC's) DSLAM / BRAS)?

When you tried different routers, were you using the ST510 as modem? Modem built into other router? Other modem?

What VoIP equipment do you have (specific models of IP phones, ATAs, softphones)?

Well, all of the providers in Jordan are handed off to Jordan Telecom, so seems to be the common thread...

Ok, can you please clarify this statement?

browsing is standard once a call engaged the whole like goes down if another call got connected to both fall down

Does this mean Internet access works fine until a call is placed. When on a call the internet is very slow (almost like it is not working)

And when 2 calls are happening does this knock both the Internet and phone calls offline?

3rd. yes i tried many ISP and still gettin this one .
4th. we only have ST as modems here .. its provided by the only PROVDER in the whole country .. and ive tried few ST modems to see if it work or no .. like ST510 and ST310.
i also gave the DLINK routers a shot to try it .
5th. i have LINKSYS pap2 as its the only available in the market ..
when i tried to get another device the custom comfiscated the device .

I feel it is likely that the useful upstream capacity of your line is not sufficient to handle two concurrent calls. Unless you know otherwise (e.g. by measuring the time needed to upload a large file, or by running a reliable speed test), let's assume that's a problem.

First, what is your contracted upstream speed? Next, log into your modem and check the sync speed. If less, your "profile" may be incorrect, or noise on your line or a faulty modem may be the cause. Finally, do a reliable speed test and confirm that at least 80% of sync speed is achieved.

Stewart @ 22nd Oct 03:31PM:
Re: its getting me crazy . PLEASE HELP ME

As bbtech says, if your upstream speed is only 128 kbps, then you don't have enough bandwidth for two G.711 calls. The PAP2 does not support two G.729 calls. While two G.723 calls should be possible, that codec is not supported by most providers. To see what codecs are being used, establish call(s) and then refresh the Info page on your PAP2. What does it show for Call 1 Encoder (for whatever lines you are using)?

What you can do is find out what is going wrong so you can fix it! 512 kbps upstream should be plenty, but you can't be sure you're getting that unless you look. You should be able to upload a one-megabyte file in about 20 seconds. Or, a reliable speed test site should show an upload speed of about 400 kbps. If you don't get close to those numbers, post your modem stats here.

While on a call, look at the PAP2 Info page to see if the selected codec and packet size is as you expect.

When you post again, please supply details about what you have tested and measured. It does no good to say how things should work, because if they actually worked that way, you wouldn't have a problem.

The coding looks ok. However, you really need to verify your bandwidth. It should have taken less than two seconds to upload that 72 kB screenshot. However, it would be better to get a more accurate test. Is there a reliable speed test site near you, perhaps provided by Orange? If not, can you upload a larger (~1 MB) file to a site near you? If not, try uploading the file here; it may take somewhat longer because of the distance, but it's still useful. Of course, don't actually post the file you upload.

Unless you have great difficulty accessing them, please post modem stats.

»speedtest.net/ shows a server in Amman:

Although the ping time is very long (about twice what I get to other sites in the Middle East), I still got some better numbers than you saw when testing to my area. Possibly, because of line noise or a modem problem, traffic in one direction causes packet loss in the other. Or, the speed reduction may the the result of intentional throttling, improper queuing, etc.

It would be interesting to see what speeds you get testing to the Amman server. If they are still poor even when no calls are in progress, I'd do a test to eliminate possible causes at your end. When your shop is closed, hook up a different modem. Configure it as a bridge, connect a single PC, and set up PPPoE on the PC. If the speed is still bad and the second modem also shows millions of errors, you have a line problem. If you have a friend with DSL, a comparison at his location may be informative.

If the single PC works fine, you could try a different router (with PPPoE set up on the router). Or, connect a second NIC to the PC, set up ICS to share the PPPoE connection, test with a PAP2 connected to the second NIC through a crossover cable.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. PX Eliezer is right -- a knowledgeable person who can see your setup and troubleshoot with his own eyes can likely get this fixed much quicker.

Stewart @ 24th Oct 03:26PM:
Re: its getting me crazy . PLEASE HELP ME

I am reasonably certain that your PAP2 is configured and working properly, and the trouble is elsewhere, probably with your line or modem. One thing that might help is changing RTP Packet Size from 0.030 to 0.060, which should cut in half the number of packets sent each second. If you can still complete calls with that setting, check the PAP2 Info page; you should see ~17 packets per second instead of ~33. If it works, it might let you get two simultaneous calls, in spite of your real problem (at a cost of adding 30 ms to latency and worsening the effect of lost upstream packets).

The actual trouble is IMO likely to be with your line or modem. When the downstream S/N margin is only 8 dB, you will get lots of errors. However, your attenuation is only 40.5 dB; a reasonably quiet line of that length should have much better margin. Unfortunately, we don't yet have hard evidence of many lost or corrupted packets (FEC errors are corrected on the fly and don't impact performance in any way). What other equipment is on your DSL line (e.g. phones, fax)? Do you have a splitter/filter or do you have individual filters on each device? Is there some sort of NID or demarcation block where you could test?

Can you get access to another DSL line (at home, at a friend's, at a business where you are known)? If so, take a PAP2 over there and confirm that it works ok. If not, we can investigate intentional blocking or throttling. If the PAP2 is ok on your friend's line, try your modem there. See how stats compare between your modem and his on the same line.

Were you able to access the Amman server at speedtest.net? Please post results (both on a call and not), and try to get results from a friend for comparison.

How? Standard G.729 or G.729A is 8 kbps. I don't see any PAP2 settings to change the data rate. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.729 speaks only of 6.4 and 11.8 kbps extensions. I've never even heard of a 5.6 variant. Does it have an annex number? Did you get special firmware that supports it?

The PAP2 will support only one G729 session. The SPA2102 will support two. There are credible posts saying that PAP2T with latest firmware will support two sessions, but I haven't tried.

IMO the quality of G729 (at 8 kbps) is better than G723 (at 6.4 kbps), but your present issue is to find and fix the problem of having very little usable bandwidth. Once you get that fixed, you can worry about getting better voice quality for your customers.

Your bandwidth is only going to be as stable as the weakest link. Your drop in bandwidth sounds more and more like a bad connection or piece of equipment in the chain. The processors in the linksys equipment will have exponential problems that get worse as the bandwidth diminishes.

My advice would be to start replacing the wiring and equipment in your own network. Then move out side and start cleaning up your connections towards the telco office.

Or hire someone Qualified.
Judging by your issues; going cheap may be the most costly expense you will have.

This is the first time you said that the problem is intermittent. In your original post, you said that whenever you had two simultaneous calls the line would go down. If you see a pattern to when it works and when it doesn't, that could be very useful information. Note that many line problems are caused by outside wiring issues and are often intermittent. For example, a defective splice may become noisy when it rains, or when it gets hot. Crosstalk might cause trouble only when the other involved line is in use. A problem caused by an arcing streetlight will make trouble only at night, and so on.

Assuming that the intermittent aspect doesn't make the tests invalid, IMO we should wait for the results from your friend's location, so we will know what areas to investigate further.

As Stewart said, try testing from your friends place with your setup and see if anything changes.

As suggested by a few on this forum it's likely a physical issue with the copper lines to your shop, your modem (not as likely because you mentioned you tried other modems with the same intermittent problem) or pending the outcome of your test it could also be ISP network issues.

My apology. I got mixed up with something else. Many thanks for spotting this flaw on my post above and I appreciated that.

Re: its getting me crazy . PLEASE HELP ME

hi everyone
ive got something sooo new today
ive tried to google it .. no use
anyway

i telnet my modem ..
and changed the mode that my dsl go with from multi_adsl2plus to multi_adsl2
gone to my modem page found something different there
the pic show it all

if u compair it with the pics i post before u`ll notice that the DSL line gave the right parameter .. 2048/512 and FEC are nothing compare to wat i used to have .. also wat got my attention something called Modulation
which is
Modulation: ANSI G.992.1 Annex A
in the past pix was something else ..
now ..
once i got these parameters in my modem .. the line gone sooo smooth .. no problems at all ..
if i reboot it and got the old parameters problems shown again .. found out that i need to resync the DSL few times to get these parameters and it work after the 3rd up to 5th times ..

anyone can explain it .. or it may help someone else

Re: its getting me crazy . PLEASE HELP ME

In the failing case, your modem negotiated G.992.5 (ADSL2+). Normally, this standard has better operating margins than the G.992.1 variants on a given line, but that seems not to be true in your case. Possibly, your modem doesn't handle it correctly, the DSLAM doesn't handle it correctly, or your line has severe noise in the higher frequency band used by the newer standard. If that is the case, any setting that prevents G.992.5 from being used should keep your system running well.

However, your original post showed 5+ hours of operation and the new posts only a few minutes each. It's possible that the problem is intermittent and given a chance will make trouble even with G.992.1. So, let it run for some hours and check the stats again.

See »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric···ber_line

BTW, this sort of trouble shows why local help is a good idea. Someone might have looked at your first modem stats, said "Hey, G.992.5 doesn't work in Jordan"; you would have changed the settings and been up and running right away.

Re: its getting me crazy . PLEASE HELP ME

thanks again Stewart

ive knocked all doors .. not only one ..
truly don't know why this happened here
ive mentioned up-there that i contacted someone in the telecom company and he told me it gonna cost them around 2 mill to expand the dsl switch capacity ..

and now ..
as u see am sending the results and i`ll send more in few hrs as well to show it all to u ..

is there anyway to control the Modulation else than this one ?

and wat is better

multimode or multi_adsl2 or multi_readsl2

also the telecom company is the only provider for ST modems . and it come LOCKED .. i got mine unlocked ..
would this mess anything in it ?

Re: its getting me crazy . PLEASE HELP ME

The trouble might still be with your line -- check S/N margin and error counts at peak times.

It's possible that some aspect of the network infrastructure (phone company, ISP, upstream carrier) is inadequate to handle the peak load -- tools such as tracert and ping may help locate the source.

Surely you are not the only one facing these problems. That's why you need to get some local help. They will know where the weak spots are and whom to contact to get the problem corrected, if possible.

Why do you need a switch?

Why don't you want to use one hosted elsewhere?

If you do decide to have your own switch, I would not recommend running it on a machine used for other purposes, and certainly not on one providing Net access to customers; if it hangs, crashes or needs rebooting, all calls would be dropped. If you use a dedicated computer, then IMO you should choose the application first and install whatever OS it needs. Some free switch distributions even include the OS on the install disk.
