[CATV] Cox HD picture quality

Has anyone else noticed that the picture quality of certain HD channells has been very poor lately? I don't notice the effect on the major networks, but channels like FX and National Geographic, the picture will get some sort of macroblocking effect, but it has to do with brightness levels, they flicker back and forth, sometimes giving the picture a purplish hue.

I know this isnt an issue with my television or DVR box because it does not do this on the major networks at all.

I am guessing that Cox is recompressing the expanded HD channels in order to fit more content into a specified bandwidth.

Does anyone else have this issue?

No, I'm in the New Orleans area and don't experience this effect. However, I do notice that some programs, when broadcasted in HD, do not look as sharp as other HD programs.

Yes, it is a severe problem for me here in Gainesville. We have observed this at numerous locations throughout the city now. I noticed it was the worst I've ever seen it on FX today on Ice Age... by far and away the worst I've ever seen the compression get. Watching SEC football on CBS right now the feed looks pretty terrible too. When players get in motion they turn to squares. I don't know how people consider this "HD".

Only occasionally, but it is usually because of the source broadcast. I've seen shows one hour look terrible and then the next hour, the show on looks fantastic, all on the same network.

Speaking of Ice Age I noticed the exact same thing a few months back, so I taped it. Then when it came on again later I taped it a second time and noticed the macroblocking was happening at the same time. Just to make sure I had my neighbor tape it on Direct TV and he saw the same thing at the same time.

Another movie I saw have this exact same issue on FXHD was XXX: State of the Union. Again taping both at different times and the macroblocking would show at the same time on both recordings.

bingo..... believe it or not, but networks have a part in your cable companies/sats/telcos issues :)

But, I contend that as Cox customers our avenue to complain is via Cox. We pay Cox, they need to be able to field our complaints and tell us if it is their issue or the channel provider. We have no other way to tell.
