espn blackout
Why does ESPN say "this game is blacked out in your viewing area"?? I never saw this message on ESPN before when I had Insight or Time Warner.

Re: espn blackout
AT&T has contracts with the major sporting organizations. In these contracts, if the game does not sell out within a specified amount of time, the game will be blacked out. AT&T has no control over the blackouts as they occur.

Re: espn blackout
Cause probably the same game is on your local ABC channel, an alternate game should have been available on 610 ESPN alt1. ;)

Re: espn blackout
I have Time Warner Cable and when they "black out" a game on ESPN, they just run the ESPN News channel. I guess AT&T shows an actual blackout slide.
Every time I've seen this it's because the game is available on a local channel.

Re: espn blackout
Thanks for the link, I assumed that was the reason(on ABC) but I thought they would show alternate programming on ESPN like every other cable co instead of a blackout message.

Think possibly Uverse doesn't have that capability in the VHOs and they have to put it on the alt channel. ;)

Re: espn blackout
ESPN blackout policy is VERY irritating. We had planned on watching the Texas game on ESPN 2 last night , it wasn't available on an alternative channel. The alternative was the USC/Oregon game.
Having a husband from Texas, you have to understand that any Texas game is life or death...lol
We were watching the pre game analysis and when they went to switch to the actual game our screen froze and we never could get that channel back. Called tech support and they were not able to give us an answer that made sense and the screen didn't show a "this game is blacked out" message.
Needless to say there was a great deal of irritation over this issue.. Not AT&T's issue per se but DANG it's irritating.

Where are you located? Depending on where you live, the game was either on ABC or ESPN2 (606/1606). See yesterday's ESPN/ABC coverage map in the link below.

When the channel "froze", did you try to do a soft reboot of the DVR/STB?

Re: espn blackout
Live is So Cal, and the USC game was on ABC... ESPN2 was the only channel for the Texas game that we could find.
We soft booted the receiver, and then tech support refreshed the signal and had us unplug the receiver ... everything rebooted fine , all our other channels were fine. Just ESPN 2 was blank for the entire game.
Thanks for the link, I'll check that out !
