My office has DSL and my mail isn't going out reliably. It actually looks like 1-2 emails might sneak out the first time after I try to send but after that I'm getting error messages. Any thoughts? I'm sending through smtp.comcast.net and authenticating with my comcast account. No problems when I'm on a comcast line... just with the ATT DSL line.

.... any help appreciated.

Seeing what the error messages say might be helpful, but if your email client is configured properly, anything else suggested would be a guess at this point:

server: smtp.comcast.net
Port: 587
SSL: ON (not required, but highly encouraged)
Authentication, but NOT the SPA variety.

I'll check the error message and re-post when I get to the office next. I just end up tethering my blackberry to send email.

I just keep forgetting to post a question when I'm there.

Without a specific error message, it would be difficult to say. I can reliably send through 'smtp.comcast.net' from my ATTIS connection in the S.F. Bay Area. Last time I checked (I only do this when a relative with a Comcast account is on premises; she sets up the server access, but deletes it when she leaves) they even accepted a connection on port 25; but I'd recommend using port 465 with SSL in your case. Comcast will accept it that way.

With AT&T DSL, you have to register any e-mail addresses you are using other than the AT&T ones. It's a process of several pages on their site, but it works when you are done. Unfortunately, I'm at home and can't remember exactly where to go, but it's in the help and support section. I send from work with my Comcast address now all the time.

What are you talking about? I can use 'smtpauth.sbcglobal.net' without doing any of that. In any case, that has nothing to do with using 'smtp.comcast.net' from an ATTIS IP connection!

you can only send mail from smtp.comcast.net if you are inside comcast's network, they've had that restricted for a long time

Eh? Why do the Comcast help pages explain how to set up a client to access 'smtp.comcast.net' from outside of the Comcast IP network? Doesn't make any sense to tell customers how to do something that they aren't going to allow!

Norman is correct, the above isn't correct.

Just use port 587 and SSL with your comcast.net username and password as described above.

I switched to port 465 (from 25) and it works now... thanks.

The original post was getting crossed up, email referencing smtpauth.sbcglobal.net was for someone sending through the SBC mail servers (one of the reasons that I switched my home and a different office to Comcast).
