Mount Madonna Fire Threatens Hundreds of Homes
Update: 1200 acre Fire forcing Thousands of Evacuations. This is now considered a Major Fire with Calls going out to all agencies.
MOUNT MADONNA - Multiple strike teams are battling a 600-acre wildfire, called the Loma Fire, that broke out early about 3 a.m.
The area burning is the Maymen's Flat area, which burned in the Summit Fire. Air tankers are dropping fire retardant and water on the blaze.
More than 200 firefighters are on scene, according to Colleen Baxter of Cal Fire.
There is no containment and no estimate of containment. There are 80 to 100 residences in the area between Summit Road and Highland, some have been evacuated. About 75 homes are threatened, none have been destroyed.
The fire started somewhere in the Ormsby Cutoff/Maymen's Flat area early this morning and is burning east of where the Summit Fire, which burned 4,200 acres and destroyed dozens of homes. Cal Fire said high winds are moving the blaze west. More wind is expected this afternoon.
Diane Zulliger, who has lived in the mountains for 33 years with her husband, two cats and a dog, said they were alerted to the fire by a neighbor at 4 a.m. They returned home from a nine-day cruise, just two hours earlier.
From their home on Loma Prieta Way, she said "It's not something you want to come home to."
Winds whipped in the mountains and the fire kicked up as the winds swirled around.
Evacuations were ordered for Highland Way and Eureka Canyon and Loma Prieta Way and Ormsby Cutoff about 6:15 a.m.
Roads closed include Spanish Ranch, Mount Madonna, Loma Prieta Way, Ormsby Cutoff, Highland Way and Soquel/San Jose Road at Summit.

Why is it that people who never pay attention to the weather are always the first to complain.

Because a lot of people here have families up there and other forums like the south east forum check in here when there is a major fire.

By that same rationale, can I post automotive repair or linux based questions here since many people here know about cars and computers?

We have forums for both...If it bothers you that much that I am posting on a devasting fire in Northern Calif with which many people have checked in on, then tell the Mods and they will delete it.
I have no problem with that.

CalFire did a control burn, me thinks it got a wee bit out of control.
They just had 10 inches of rain, you would think that would dampen things a bit, guess not.

The hurricane force winds coming up later tonight should be nasty, sure hope they have a handle on this one.

I heard on the news this evening that it's about 55% contained and that the evacuation orders have been lifted. But they are worried about the high winds that are being predicted.

Most of the containment lines are up on the eastern ridges, the west side is the open area. That being said, high winds can make it leap over those lines pretty quickly.
As posted, this fire was a controlled burn of accumulated piles of fuel by CalFire that got away from them, so far only two trailers and some outbuildings have burned.
