[crt/lcd] Higher monitor refresh rates not recognized
I have an old Gateway monitor (17 inch CRT) and when I downloaded the latest graphics driver (VIA onboard graphics) it only supports 60 and 75 hertz, while a two year old driver on the VIA site supports 85 and 100 hertz also. Now I know that my monitor supports the higher rates because I have been using it for years with an old Nvidia card. I had to replace the motherboard and all I really need is the onboard graphics. I have tried everything I can find on the Internet to force the higher refresh rates, but none of the software is able to communicate directly with the monitor (they all use what Windows XP or the graphics driver tells them). I really need the 100 hertz but then I have to use the old driver. I did ask on their site and their response was, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Any thoughts?

What is model of monitor? Have you installed latest driver for it? Available refresh rate choices can be tied as much to what monitor Windows thinks you're using, as to what video driver you're using.

How is the monitor listed in Device Manager? If it's generic Plug and Play, it's using the default .inf file for monitors which contains only very basic operating parameters for them.
You should have a disk that came with the monitor that has its .inf file on it. Update the driver and use "Have Disk" to load the .inf file from your monitor's CD.
If you don't have the disk, you may be able to get the file from Gateway support.
If not, update the driver and choose some other 17" monitor from the "Let me choose" list of options, and see if that has the operating modes you're looking for.

Hi,
Are you sure your onboard graphics can support 100hertz? Is the older driver for your motherboard? Do you need the newer driver? If not use the older one, If it is for your board.

The monitor is an EV730 Gateway and I have always used the Gateway inf file for it.

Yes, it supports 100 hertz because I am currently using the older driver at 100 hertz. The older driver is the exact one for my motherboard. They have a bunch of older drivers and if I install another older one (but newer than the one I'm using) it will support 85 hertz, but not 100. As they get newer all of them only support 60 and 75 hertz.
I really want 100 hertz with the new driver and just can't figure out how to get the driver to recognize the higher rates. I even looked at every file in the driver to see if I could "hack" it, but no luck.

One of the screens in the display properties has a check box marked something like "Show only compatible modes". Uncheck it and you'll see more options available...

I appreciate your response, but believe me I've tried everything.
