SB5100 constantly losing upstream channel

I posted this on the Comcast direct forums as well, but started seeing posts here that could be related so I wanted to see if anyone else has any problems that may be specific to the 5100 after the D3 upgrades have hit your area...

Here is my message on the direct forums:

Do you guys have something going on in the Castle Rock/Monument area that would be affecting the upstream channel on an SB5100? Both my dad (Monument, CO) and my brother (Castle Rock, CO) (about 40 miles apart) have SB5100s, and both are seeing the same problem. Several times a day, if not more often, the modem loses the upstream channel and has a difficult time finding a new (or the same) one.

Signal levels are -1dBmV downstream and 40 up. My dad's is quite a bit lower on upstream at around 31, down is about the same. SNR on both are 37. Doubt it's level related since they are both seeing this suddenly...

Related logs on my brothers:

(lots of T3 timeouts)

Obviously this isn't likely a line tech type of problem since they live so far apart, and had good service until recently....

They are DOCSIS 2.0 compliant and should work fine (and in fact, were working fine until recently)...

I.M.H.O., the SB5100 was one of the best modems ever made ! Always was and still is bulletproof even though it may not be up to today's standards.

Re: SB5100 constantly losing upstream channel

Nothing wrong with a 5100, and 40 miles apart (could be different CMTS, and maybe different causes) having the same problem, MIGHT or MIGHT NOT be related.
Your dad's upstream might be a little low (depends on his other numbers) and the T3's on your brothers log might indicate upstream SNR problems..But if D3 just hit your area you might want to give them a week, or call now and let them know.
After D3 hit here ,there were some rough days while the rebalanced various channels, but wuthin a few days everything was at least as good as before, and now is rock solid.

Re: SB5100 constantly losing upstream channel

It's a different CMTS, as far as I know. Just strange that the timing for this issue was identical for both. It's been going on for a few weeks...

Maybe it's just a different port on the same CMTS ?

Would you happen to know if it is the same headend for both of you ?

Maybe it's bulletproof because there is too many holes :p

Motorola,Sony and DLink have the worst firmware ever

they are the top 3 with shitty firmware

netgear makes #4 on the list

Is that just your opinion or can either of you back up your comments with some empirical evidence ?

And?
If you have a modem that came with Windows ME drivers..it's time to think about replacing it.

Re: SB5100 constantly losing upstream channel

I love what these threads turn into... :)

Modems are (somewhat) dumb devices...Pretty much a programmable DSP. As such, age doesn't make them "go bad", and DOCSIS 2.0 compatibility is DOCSIS 2.0 compatibility. If it couldn't meet the standard, it wouldn't be certified for use in that capacity.

Trust me, I'm all about the latest and greatest (I had a SB6120 the day they rolled out D3 here), but for those that don't really care (my dad and brother in this case), there is no reason why their 5100s shouldn't work just fine. They get the PB speeds just fine as well...

This thread sounds very Comcastic so far - Rather than fix the actual problem, just replace the modem...(which, ironically, would likely solve the problem, but that's not the point)....

Re: SB5100 constantly losing upstream channel

I had my 5100 until 1 month ago when I electively changed it for an SB6120 so that I could upgrade to the Ultra service and take advantage of the benefits of channel bonding on my segment. My point is that I was getting Powerboost bursts up to 34 Mbps on the down and 4.3 Mbps on the up with it !! The 5100 was six years old.. I was on the Blast 16/2 tier at the time. Not too shabby I would say.

Re: SB5100 constantly losing upstream channel

This could be related, as the OP shows the same ranging errors that I'm seeing:

»Longmont Colorado HSI Cable Modem Issues: Locks and Drops

It's possible that the new SB5100 firmware that recently got rolled out is causing all of this...

Re: SB5100 constantly losing upstream channel

Too bad Dadkins isn't here to set you straight on the SB5100.

Any way, the only reason to replace a working SB5100, would be if a customer was subscribing to a D3 tier.

Age means nothing if the modem is D2 capable and is supported by an ISP.

As expected, this was a CMTS issue and has been fixed!

Countless SB5100s in my area have probably just been saved from the landfills... :)

I'm curious as to exactly what happened. Can you elaborate and/or post some documentation ?

Same type of system problems in Fort Collins, perhaps related to release of D3.
