"d" drive
I have an old gateway. The "d" drive keeps opening and closing and will not stop doing it. What needs to be done to correct this little problem?

Not to be snide... I would suggest this
»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···27106289
Or at least any old optical drive you can throw in there to make sure it is the drive and not the system. You could also check for a firmware release for your drive and see if that helps.
BTW... I linked to a SATA DVD/RW... make sure you have an available SATA port on your mobo before ordering that style.

Re: "d" drive
as veloslave has pointed out, it probably is a bad drive(caused by a faulty switch).
but it, also, could be caused by a software problem such as a "prank trojan/virus".

Re: "d" drive
Does the cd open/close when you are in the BIOS? (or even just once power is applied) If yes, then it's a bad drive, and can easily be replaced. If no, it's probably a virus in Windows that is causing it.

It was doing its thing when the power was on. It has stopped now. Maybe I kicked it in the right place.

You're not supposed to kick the computer.
Someday it may turn on you..................you surely remember Hal in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
