TSI Steve @ 28th Oct 09:46AM:
Usenet Services- Clarification
Hello,
There's been much discussion and assumption over what TekSavvy is receiving from UNS for newsgroup service/access -- we can remove the confusion! We've been contacted by UNS just today to confirm exactly what we are receiving.
The server we are being hosted on has 60 days of retention and 99% completion.
They have offered to move us to a new system that supports 200 days of retention still with the 99% completion.
We think that this is a good opportunity for us and our clients :)
With the change to the new system your newsgroup counters/subscriptions will be reset.
We are setting a target date to accomplish this change as Mon. Nov 2 2009.
Thank you,
TekSavvy

welcome to friendly, knowledgeable, english speaking tech support, Canadian owned and operated co that fights for customer rights.
Unlike your old provider that hikes your rates at every opportunity, sends jobs overseas, tells you its your computer/routers fault when they have a outage, neglects your privacy, hosts your email in the USA (so Americans get to read your mails (see the patriot act)), Made up fee's (touch tone, system access fee), rental modems (that you can't buy), bill by the byte, double billing, fee's for leaving their services (etf) if you don't call right on the 30 day mark before your contract ends, Punjabi tech support that don't give a crap about you,........
But ya 200 day retention is a good reason to switch.......
LMAO
With Teksavvy its 1 Mbps news (I get less) and you need a static IP to access it which costs $4.00. astraweb has a deal on for $11 300+ days retention and you will get full speed downloading.

If I am not on a static ip with TekSavvy, if I use astraweb for downloads, do I experience throttling during peak times?

Not true, I used astra for years and then tried UNS for a couple months just for a change and noticed no difference in speed or completion or stability/availability.
the only difference is one is 10$/mth and one is 11$/mth .
to even spice things up a bit more I recently signed up (switched to) at supernews (9.95/mth unlimited) and can say the same thing about it.. I notice no difference between the 3 at all.

I dont think you will run into that at all, but if you want, most of the current/popular usenet software will let you use multiple servers at the same time.
I never ran into a situation where astraweb wouldnt max my connection out.

200 days of retention will definitely make the service much better in function and value. The 1Mb limit may be somewhat limiting but IMO, the short rentention 30 days then even 60 days, was much more restrictive since there's no way around it.

It launches in a firefox tab.
So:
Launch it (faster if your browser is already open)
Go Configuration>Servers> enter your configs...
Go under Folders (can't remember if its config or prefs) set a location for your usenet downloads. Then tell it to scan your firefox download folder for NZB files.
You'll have everything completely automated.
Once you have it running it's pretty much the Cadillac of usenet downloaders.
I love it.

There are lots of places you can google nzb indexers and you'll find what you need.
The big ones are:
newzleech.com
binsearch.info
Again I can't stress this enough:
Buyer beware, these site won't have user feedback (ie: virus, fake that type of commentary) so check the size, to make sure it matche what you'd want to download and scan first.

For those that have feedback, go through it!
What are you using to scan them? In the past, even though comments were positive, the scanner would always bring up some issue with a virus or trojan... false positive type of thing.

Hmm I usually download in ubuntu unpack, re-assemble and then for the stuff I got that's windows specific I copy it over to windows, scan the file (assuming its an ISO or .exe) if it comes up negative, I install it.
And then Scan again...
Call me paranoid but I'm so used to Mac and Ubuntu being virus free that I assume anything on windows is virus prone.
I just got ClamAV and I'll be scanning it in Ubuntu now before moving it over to the win partition.

I love it, and most people I recommended it to love it. One caveat, if you're a linux nerd, and you mess around with your python libraries, you may want to make sure the version of SAB you're using is compatible with the version of python you're using.
I messed around with it once, and it took me a day of tinkering to figure it out. It still worked (as in the processes d/l, unrar all of that) but the UI was totally unresponsive.
So careful with that one.

Sometimes I am able to fetch really old stuff no problem anyway from the current service, even though it doesn't "officially" have a very long retention period.
Right now I'm pulling something that is 280 days old from alt.binaries.multimedia. I'm also getting 2mbit, not the 1mbit I'm supposed to get.
It always seems to be a bit of a crap-shoot for both speed and retention, but for me, it has always tended to be longer retention than I expected to get.

Best clients:
Newsleecher if your willing to pay for supersearch. No need for Nzbs... Great program, auto unrars, queues par2's for incompletes, deletes rars / ect.
Newsbin - More expensive version than newsleechers supersearch... but more reliable. 64 bit client also, if your REALLY into newsgroups/dont mind paying... this is the one to get.
Nzbplayer... downloads a nzb, and "streams"(Opens it up in VLC and plays it), as it downloads...so long as your nets fast enough. (IE... You wont be able to queue a bluray and watch it :P)
