[AZ] Mailer demon from Russia

I get every day about 30 messages from Russia that my emails could not be sent. But I did not send any email. Somebody is using my account to send spam. Sometimes there are even attachments what I never open. I replied to the russian Mailer Demon - no response; but postmaster@cox.net let me know that my message could not be sent. What can I do? :(

Re: [AZ] Mailer demon from Russia

The messages are not being sent from your account, the spammer is just adding (forging) your address to the spam when they send it out.

Nothing much you can do to avoid this happening as the spammer can collect your address from so many places that you can't control. A primary one out of your control is from other Windows computers that your address is on get infested with spyware. You can of course shoot yourself in the foot by posting your address to open forums, mailing lists and the like.

The best thing to do is just delete the nessages, if you have the time reporting them to spamcop.net might help.

Thanks. Not very encouraging, but I will try to be patient with deleting the messages. Perhaps one day it will be over.

Re: [AZ] Mailer demon from Russia

If you are a webmail user you may want to carefully check all of your settings to see if any of them have been tampered with. We've seen many cases over the past few years of customers webmail accounts getting compromised due to either weak passwords, responding to phishing emails, or keylogger trojans installed on their systems.

Thanks. I am not a webmail user myself, I am connected to the computer of my husband, who has another email address and had never problems so far.
I answered and complained in the last three days all of the postmaster and mailer demons ( about 60) and told them that I did not send the email... You won't believe, but since yesterday I did not get any Russian spam anymore (fingers crossed).

They probably figure that after a few days your name is blacklisted by a lot of users so they move on to someone else's address to abuse.

Too bad Cox doesn't offer any protection for this type of thing to their users, it is available and simple to set up.

What you are receiving is called Backscatter.
Impossible to fix.

I administer email servers and the server software I use has Backscatter protection.

Read up on it here:

Re: [AZ] Mailer demon from Russia

A user has some options to detect bounces and delete them if they have good filtering available on their mail system or local computer.

A mail admin has the ability to reduce the backscatter problem from their servers if management is willing to support that. Having a backscatter problem can be a very bad thing for admins.

Re: [AZ] Mailer demon from Russia

A few other suggestions -

1 - Forward all your email, automatically, to Gmail. Google's spam filters are excellent. It's easy and free to create a gmail account and it's also free to forward email from Cox.

2- Burn your current email address. Simply erase it and create a new one. (This is drastic of course...)
