I demand my higher speeds
So due to geographical limitations I am stuck with 2MBps speeds. I was checking out Bell's site to see if I could get higher speeds through them (maybe via a remote or something), and then I got a pop-up from a sales rep asking if she could help me. I figured "what the hell" and decided to waste some of her time.
Katherine: Hello, thank you for visiting bell.ca. How may I help you today?
You: can you tell my why your better speeds aren't available in ottawa?
You: for my address you only offer 2 meg service
Katherine: May I have the Street name, Street number, Apt/suite, City, Province and Postal code to check the availability of Internet at your place?
You: [My address]
You: ottawa, k1v 8v8
Katherine: I checked and found that your area is qualified for internet essential plus and internet performance
You: that's not what it says when i checked
Katherine: Please note that speed of internet performance is 6 MBPS.
Katherine: I can assure that you will receive Performance plan in your area.
You: you mean i'll pay for "perfomance" and get "up to" 6MBps, right?
Katherine: Yes.
Katherine: If you want I can help you with that.
You: do you know what speeds i can realistically get in that neighborhood?
Katherine: The Free usage will be 25 GB.
Katherine: I can assure you that the speed is up to 6 MBPS.
You: i know that, but the speed depends on the distance from your central office
You: do you know roughly what speeds that neighborhood can get?
Katherine: I cannot see the speed getting at your neightbour, however you can get up to 6 MBPS with Performance paln.
Katherine: We do have Essential plus plan which gives you 2 MBPS plan.
You: never mind then, 2MBps is not what i consider "high speed"
You: i guess i'll just go with rogers
Katherine: Please note that you can get Performance plan which gives 6 MBPS.
You: no, i can't
You: i get less than 2 right now
You: and that's the best i can get
Katherine: I think you are in different plan.
You: no, i'm with a different provider
You: they are a wholesale client of bell's
Katherine: Performance Plan can surely give you up to 6 MBPS speed.
Katherine: I have already checked it.
You: yes, you can definitely charge me for "up to" 6MBps, but I'm telling you that I am too far to get any higher than 2
You: you really shouldn't even be offering it
Katherine: I checked your address and see that you will surely get upto 6MBPS speed.
You: never mind
Katherine: I can personally assure you that.
You: my current provider offers me 200GB per month
You: and is cheaper than your performance plan anyway
Katherine: You can have usage insurance plan for $5/month so that you can get extra 40 GB usage space.
You: you are aware that 25 + 40 = 65, and that's still less than 200, right?
Katherine: But you get 6 mbps speed and you can also add another usage insurance plan if you want.
You: No, I can't get 6MBps
You: I AM TOO FAR FROM YOUR CENTRAL OFFICE
Katherine: If you want I can send you the link.
Katherine: You can see that you will the Performance plan.
You: If you can guarantee me AT LEAST 5 MBps at my current address in a letter mailed to my house, I will sign up immediately
Katherine: Yes I can guarantee you.
Katherine: You will get 6 MBPS.
You: Then please mail that guarantee to:
[Omitted for obvious reasons]
Katherine: We don't have ant contract for Internet. You can sign up now and if you feel that you didn't get the speed you can cancel it anytime.
Katherine: However I can assure you that you will get up to 6 MBPS speed.
You: do you understand how DSL works at all?
Katherine: Yes do understand that.
You: I CAN'T GET MORE THAN 2MBps. It's technologically impossible for my phone line to receive those speeds
Katherine: Do you have a Bell Phone with you.
You: nope
Katherine: I can assure you that you will get 6 MBPS.
Katherine: If you do not have a Bell home phone, you can access Internet with the help of Dry loop.
You: I know that
You: that's what I have now
Katherine: In order to get more details about dry loop connection for Internet service, you need to contact our dry loop department at 1-877-877-5080.
Katherine: Rest assured that you will get 6 MBPS speed.
You: How much more commission do you make if I choose "perfomance" over "essential"?
Katherine: I don't get any commission. I work for Bell.
Katherine: I just gave you a accurate information.
You: Then why do you keep telling me I can get 6MBps when I keep telling you that I can't?
You: I've tried
You: it's just not possible
Katherine: I checked and see that you will surely get 6mbps speed with Perfformance plan.
You: OK, I've wasted enough of your time
You: you can go try and con someone else now
Katherine: I am sorry for any inconvenience, but I can assure you that you will get 6 MBPS speed for sure.
Katherine: Is there anything else I can do for you today?
Kathering GUARANTEED that I could get 6MBps, why did the Teksavvy guys lie to me and tell my I couldn't get better than 2? (I kid, of course)
Just thought someone else here might get a kick out of this.

mebbe they would put him on a remote - he could possibly get 6mb then. I wonder if he is in one of those so-called "embargoed" areas?
Edit:
Should have gotten a Rep ID number

I tried going with Rogers. The rep in the store claimed it was "impossible" to sign up for their internet service without a 1 year contract. At that point I just said "f*ck it" and left.
Tek has never lied to me. Until I can find someone else who won't lie to me, I'm sticking around.

Just a FYI, some people here who "couldn't get" 5Mbps after signing up with TSI switched to Sympatico, got hooked to a remote with 6Mbps sync, switched back to TSI and then petitioned Bell/TSI until they got their 5-6Mbps sync off the remote back, citing their Sympatico sync speeds as proof.
Not a pleasant process but it is possible.

What you went thru there with Bell is a joke. My favorite was "I don't get any commission. I work for Bell."

That sounds like a huge hassle. I'd do it I knew there was a remote nearby. The fact that she told me this was possible whereas the website's "availability checker" told me the contrary is not encouraging. Is there any way to find out if there's a remote nearby without switching first?

You can call and ask where the closest CO is.

I was with b2b2c and had 6mbps and switched to Teksavvy and the bell guy tried to tell me 3 was the best i could do and I said thats bull because 6 days ago I was at 6mbps and he said well its different at different addresses and I explained it was at the current address.
Once I had him convinced he opened his cell and called and oh whats this? magically now I can get 5mbps? wow.. funny how that works

Even if Bell built a CO across the street from your home last week, your line will most likely still be going to the 20 years old CO across town. Because there is a CO near you does not mean it is the one that actually feeds your trunk cable and even if it does, your line may be doing significant detours on its way there... the CO may be practically across the street, not even 500m away, but your loop distance to the CO can be over 1km because the trunk snakes around 2-3 city blocks on its way there.
Distance to the CO is only half the story!

That Rogers rep LIED... (was it a corporate store or a dealer? I have found sometimes SALES REPS at stores like to lie cause they don't get commission unless they sell 1 year min)
30 day contracts are all that is required with Rogers.. you just don't get any promo deals.

I know damn well that I can get their service without a 1 year contract, but I tried arguing with the guy about it then he actually got a co-worker to back up his claim. I have a policy of not dealing with people who flat out lie to me.
This was at the Rogers store in Billings Bridge mall.

Try posting in the Bell Direct Forum here; »/forum/sympatdirect
They are pretty helpful and honest there and they may be able to tell you. Just don't let on that will do a switcharoo after you sign up :) . Just say you are thinking of switching and you wanted to know if you could get on a remote because your speeds are too low. Also I would register a different screen name to post there they read this forum most likely.

Re: I demand my higher speeds
I called up Primus and they told me I'm about 2km away from whatever equipment they use. Am I correct in assuming this means there is, in fact, a remote nearby? Anyway I can use that to get a bump with Tek?
I would go with Primus if I didn't have to switch phones to do it; Bell wouldn't see a nickel of mine and I could stop feeding Telus too. I've just gotten too used to having a cell phone and I could never go back to a phone that can't text.
Edit: If I can get better speeds with Tek I would probably get a second one and MLPPP it. Is this going to be even more complicated?

I had the same BS a month ago!! I live in Port Stanley, Ontario near London. They promised me the Performance package at 6MBps and all I got was 2.3 .
Without verifying I made the change then had to go back to the slower package.
Bell used to be know for service and know-how. Now they're snake oil salesmen/women.
