[CA] Is it my router? Or my cable modem???

My WAN connection keeps dropping. When I go to my router's config pages and try to release & renew, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes power cycling the cable modem fixes the problem, sometimes I have to power cycle the modem AND my router before I can get a valid WAN IP.

The router is a Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (05/21/09) vpn-small (SVN revision 12188M NEWD Eko)

The cable modem I don't remember (it's not very accessible.)

I don't mind replacing either one - if i could just figure out for sure which one really needs to be replaced, but money is way too tight to just guess at it and hope I get the right one.

Any suggestions?

First of all just direct connect to the modem itself and then see if the problem continues.

Edit: btw what kind of cable modem do you have?

Thanks for the suggestion. So simple. Sheesh, I shoulda thought of that! The modem is made by Best Data and it's quite old (4 or 5 years at least).

Right after my original post, I lost my WAN connection again. Power cycled the modem a few times - no dice. Power cycled the router - still nothing. Got your response on my iPhone & connected my PC directly to the cable modem - that worked.

I'll give it some time to see if the connection drops again, but of course, I've just taken every other computer on the LAN (including my wife's laptop) offline, so I don't know how long I'll be able to keep testing in this configuration before the complaints start.

Well i have never heard of a best data modem, and if your problem continues after direct connecting. Then if i was you i would seriously think about replacing the modem, being 5 years old, and all things can start to go bad. As for a modem i would suggest, Motorola is a good brand.

Yeah, it was a cheapo from Frys. Definitely got my money's worth. So far so good with the direct connection.

If it turns out to be the router, that's probably a really good thing in general... I have a spare (Asus) router that I bought a while back.

Re: [CA] Is it my router? Or my cable modem???

Well this is the only cable modem i could find from best data. Best data CMX300V2, is that your modem? If so i can really see it maybe, being the problem since its only a docsis 1.1 modem, and cox is moving to docsis 3.0 which means they are upgrading there equipment, and it will come to a point the modem will probably stop working on there network.

Actually, mine is even older than that! »www.amazon.com/Best-Data-CMX300-···00062SU2

Is it possible that, even though it seems to be working fine with a direct connection to my laptop, it could still be the modem (and not the router)?

Re: [CA] Is it my router? Or my cable modem???

Well if possible i would keep running it like it is for a day or two, and if it seems ok after that then it could very well be the router. But I do want you to know withen the next 6months to a year you will have to upgrade that modem for cox service. If i was you i would call in, and see if they could swap out your modem for a newer one. Because most the time they will, and give you a good price.

No problem. I just don't want you to be a customer who goes to get on the internet one day, and it not work. Because that will end of happening with these older modems, they will stop working on cox's network. But suppostly cox sends out letters letting there customers know they need to upgrade there modem, for there service to continue to work for you.

OK, well it definitely looks like it's the modem. It has dropped the WAN connection several times since my original post. Power cycling it usually works, but that's getting old.

I just ordered a Motorola SB5101 from Amazon. Thanks for the help, everyone!
