What's wrong with the Win7 defrag? This is the first time I've ever opened it and it looks like its been running since the beginning.

Vista and windows 7 supposedly both defrag the HDD when idle

It's not required..but it's prolly what I, personally will do :)

Win7 defrag runs weekly by default. If you run something else you need to shut it down.

I'll use the Win7 defrag program until TrueImage comes out with TI 2010 or whatever will install and work with Win7.

Then I'll probably use theirs and the one in Win7. My reason for TI extends beyond defragging and has several other useful utilities, but I've not seen any defragging programs that offer any tangible benefits over things like TI or Windows.

If someone wants to prove me wrong though, I'd like to hear about any superior features of other products. :)

I'll be using Diskeeper 2009 (or 2010 if it's out by then) when I get my Win 7 equipped Toshiba notebook next month. It has always worked nicely on XP and Vista for me :)

I contacted Diskeeper and they sent me a file that will work with Win 7 64 bit.....I installed it and it works fine. Attached is the file.

Use to use Diskeeper but switched over to PerfectDisk. Diskeeper constantly defrags your drives even when they don't need it. One time it did it for over four hours when there was only a little bit of fragmentation. It is the ifaast service that is the worst. That thing runs at midnight every night and takes forever. You can't change the time when it runs or anything.

With PefectDisk 10 I set it to run Tuesdays and Fridays at 6 PM doing a SmartPlacement. I know it is working because when I first installed windows 7 it was a little bit sluggish. After running PD a few times it runs much better.

Not to get off topic here ..but if you'd like to start a separate thread...my DK ifaast has a set schedule. I set it. So I'm not sure if you missed the config properties or not, but it can certainly be set on your own schedule.

Yeah, you gotta love SmartPlacement! It arranges all your defragmented files according to usage. I was a big DK fan but switched to PD a few years back. My Windows 7 Ultimate is very "zippy" now... ;-)

LOL. Just get a 128G for your system drive and use a standard drive for large data storage. You'll never notice the difference.

lol...I've always liked Auslogics as well, but as far as I'm concerned, the Windows Defrag is just fine.
And with today's hardware, I doubt you'd even notice a difference one way or the other as far as performance.

Heck, unless things were REALLY messed up, I never noticed much of a difference with yesterdays Hardware either.

But then again, I'm a complete nut. (Just ask anyone who knows me....they'll tell you!) ;)

I probably load Windows 7 3 or 4 milliseconds faster since I defragged last! ;-)

I have Perfect Disc 2008 Build 76 on my XP partition
Windows 7 on another partition (duel boot)

You think I could defrag 7 from within the XP partition using this version of PD?

I just analyzed the 7 partition and that worked.

I'm using something called MyDefrag. Ive moved on from perfect disk. This blows any defrag ive seen out of the water. It has a simple GUI but is very the best defrag ive ever seen.

Edit: Just read from wiki that MyDefrag is a rebranded closed source version of JKDefrag. You might want to check it out because its still being supported.

I either use »www.defraggler.com to defrag only the most fragged/only fragged files (instead of waiting 2 hours for the whole drive) or I use »www.diskeeper.com/diskeeper/home···per.aspx Like was said above, for defragging the MFT and etc. Of course I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my file-server as the main OS, so I can get full use of the gigabit between my Vista box and it.

Iuse win-7 built in , does a very good job , I run it manual not from task manager . See no purpose to other defrag even thoughi have paragon partition manager 2010 with a built in defrag .

Windows 7 defrag is turned on by default and it defragged my new installation three times in three days with no notice to me about it. I was quite irritated when I discovered what it was doing. I disabled it. XP and Vista need defragging only about once every 3-4 months so I can't imagine why Windows 7 needs it every day. Plus, I hate defragging in the background like Diskeeper does. All that is completely unnecessary because defragging is seldom needed. So, I disabled the service and I will check three months from now and do an analysis and if told it needs defragging then I will do it manually. (I couldn't believe the number of services that need turning off in Windows 7. I thought there were a lot in XP and Vista but more in Windows 7 and I probably could turn off more if BlackViper has Windows 7 done on his site...I didn't check).

Well that's just plain weird. Out of the box, my Windows 7 is set to defrag once a week and so far, has done it only once since the 29th (install date).

Heh...maybe it doesn't like being on a virtual machine. :D Yeah, seriously, i thought that was really overkill. It was set by default to EVERY DAY. I could have reset it to once a week but I don't think it needs defragging that often even (based on my experience with XP and Vista) so I just turned of any sort of scheduled defrag and I will run an analysis every couple of months to see if it needs it or not. (I have the RC ...maybe it was set to every day and the final product is set to once a week)?

Well, lets say that you, and I, and Howie were in a crowded room of people. We three wanted to have a group conversation, but there are all these other people in between us three. We are all swaying back and forth trying to peek around other people to see each other, and we have to yell to be heard.

All of a sudden, someone hits a switch and these big robot arms come out of the ceiling grabbing people and rearranging where they stand. Afterward, you and I and Howie are all standing together with our bright green shirts on, and can have a normal conversation without interruption. :)

In a nutshell, keeping your disk(s) defragmented means the R/W heads don't have to jump all over the place to read fragmented files. This adds to the amount of time it takes to read these files, as miniscule as that may be. A small amount of fragmented files won't affect performance, but over time, files can become so fragmented that performance will suffer.

In addition, I love watching the little colored blocks move around. ;-)
