[hard drive] Need to know where can locate security hex screwdri
The usb port on my external hard drive is broke. One of the gold connections is broke and won't allow connection to be made. I tried to locate the security hex at sears but supposeably only special order if they have it in their catalog. Is there anywhere online besides Ebay to look for the security hex I need to remove the hard drive from the case.

small flatblade screwdriver? That's what I've used to tighten/loosen screws on an external...
You are talking the hex screw in which the head has a post in the middle?

Have a Harbor Freight nearby? They have a couple of kits of security fastener drivers that might contain what you're looking for. They're reasonably priced too.

Is it a Security Hex (6-sided Flat, w/ Post in the center) head, or a Torix (Star) head?
If it's a Torix, you should be able to find the appropriate bit at a local Auto Parts store (GM uses a lot of Torix screws)... ;)

You mean Torx?
Its probably the security screw anyway. Recently in this same forum, I was discussing my dislike for external drive manufacturers that follow the practice of having to buy special tools or require the end user to rip apart the enclosure to get to the drive.

Yes. the cat in my avatar is indeed mine.

Most likely, I haven't seen a "security" hex used for anything in ages. And many think a Torx is a hex head.
A Torx will be the same sort of tool used for modern hard drives. A security Torx has a pin in the center to prevent the use of a standard Torx driver.
If the OP can post a pic of the screw head, it can be properly ID'd.

it is definitely security hex because it has hole in center and isn't a torx. I do know what a torx looks like :)

there is one located a good distance away. just checked website and none are going to be able to get into the hole to even reach the screw.

Re: [hard drive] Need to know where can locate security hex scre
I couldn't find any security Hex on their site.
Back when I bought mine, Wiha said they were the only shop authorized to sell them. I don't know if that is true, but I couldn't find them anywhere else. I think I even had to fax in paperwork stating I owned a repair shop, as they refused to sell this particular bit to the public. (I don't see any reference to that on their page now though)
The only time I've run into the security hex has been on Seagate externals. Everything else has either been standard, or Torx tamperproof.

Stop by any local auto garage and ask when the snapon or mac guy comes around, meet him there and buy one.
Some auto part stores have them too.

Because of the odd shape, you can often use the tip of a full-size pair of scissors. Don't overexert, though... you'll strip the head.

I plan on making the external a internal hard drive. As I have mentioned before the usb port doesn't work no longer so that's what I'm taking it off of the enclosure.

You mentioned that the screws are recessed... How deep?
If they're not that deep, could you possibly cut a Slot in the case and screw head with a Dremel cutting wheel, in order to use a small flat-blade screwdriver...?

Get 'em at McMaster-Carr:

Both ends of the L-wrench fits the security hex.
edit: the last three lines for L-wrenches fit the security hex only on one end.

If you will show 'em your business card or show you need it for business purposes, they'll give you a free catalog. It's multi-thousand of pages thick, and it's well worth getting it, too--if you want one.
